Happy Love month everyone!!
For those of you with a partner, that means a lot of creativity and planning is happening to celebrate an intimate Valentine’s Day. But don’t fret if you are not in a relationship. We believe this special holiday is about celebrating all your personal relationships.

Remember when you were in school and you would frantically be completing special cards for your classmates and trying to find the right words for each person. We believe this tradition shouldn’t end after middle school.

This Valentine’s Day try creating special individualized notes for those special loved ones, send flowers to your mom, invite the family over for a nice dinner, or invite the girls over for a Galentine’s Day party.
Most importantly this Valentine’s Day- Share a Little Love!!

All in the Family

The holidays are upon us and this is the time of year you want to be surrounded by friends and family. At Handy Special Events, we are so lucky to have that feeling every single day of the year. Our gracious owners Barry and Marion Ghiglione started this business over 30 years ago with the intention of always putting their customers and employees first. They have always been there for any employee who needed support and provide the leadership necessary to maximize their employees’ potential.

Last night at our company Christmas party we had the pleasure of honouring our fantastic owners. Many of our staff shared stories of how the Ghigliones have positively impacted their lives. There was laughter, tears, and a lot of smiles, but most importantly, we all got to share in celebrating the wonderful couple who brought us all together!

It’s Not A Pain to Entertain
The holidays are upon us and you know what that means; Aunt Marg and Uncle Louis will stop by unexpectedly, shopping will undoubtedly turn into a girls night and you will be asked to host a last minute dinner for your family and 15 of their closest friends! We have all heard of this story and how stressful hosting a huge dinner can get especially at this time of the year where there are so many other things that we want to get done.
No one wants to get stuck on dish duty, or have to iron the linen napkins on top of having to prepare the meals for the get together.
We understand and are totally familiar with this feeling! At Handy Special Events, we want to make it less of a pain for you to entertain this holiday season. We have your rentals covered from cutlery to dishes, tables to table cloths, centerpieces to chairs and everything in between. All you have left to do is focus on spending quality time with your guests.
Talk to us today about your hassle-free holiday entertaining!

To rent or not to rent; that is the question

When you go on a holiday, you don’t buy a house to stay in-you rent a hotel room. It’s easy, convenient, and allows you to choose the best option for you without breaking the bank-much like event and décor rentals!
There are a few different ways you can go about acquiring the décor for your wedding. If you have endless pockets, you could choose to purchase all of your décor. A common trend now a days is to purchase already-been-loved wedding décor from online sites like Facebook and then try to sell after the wedding to recoup some costs.
There are ups and downs with this avenue. The benefits of it being that you might get some of your items a little cheaper than renting and you have the option of selling it when you are finished with it. The down sides to this kind of outweigh the ups. Used items come with a risk and although you may be saving a few dollars in the beginning, what you won’t be saving is time.

The glorious thing about rental items is that they require no maintenance what so ever. Anything you rent will come clean, pressed, laundered, wrapped, packed, and ready to go. When you are finished with your rental items, all you need to do is put them back in the box and bring them back to the store! No mess to clean up, no table cloths to wash, no vases to rinse out, no chair covers to iron, no curtains to press, no dishes to load, no cutlery to sort, no chairs to stack…..the list goes on.
The other great thing about renting your décor is you get the knowledge and expertise of a consultant. Not only do consultants know every piece of inventory they stock, they also know how to piece a design together in ways you may not have even considered.

Whether you need a few napkins, or you need to outfit you entire wedding from teaspoons to tablecloths, we at Handy Special Events would love to be a part of your special day!

Room For Improvement

When it comes to finding a venue for your big day, sometimes you luck out and come across a place that requires very little décor. For the majority of venues, this is not the case. The trend of getting married in halls, curling rinks, and community centres is still very much alive due to a lower rental cost and ample space for a large guest list.

Some spaces need a little something extra to set the mood for a reception and that is where drape, lighting, and ceiling décor come into play! Depending on your theme and the tone you want to set for the evening, the lighting you choose will play a big role. If you are going for fun, flirty, and exciting, you might want to choose coloured lights as your perimeter lighting. This will give the room a playful feel. If you are trying to set an elegant, romantic mood, you probably want to stick to soft natural glowing tones to give the room a dreamy, glamourous ambience.

Another great décor piece that won’t take up much room is perimeter drape. This comes in pretty much any color imaginable and can really transform a space quickly. Whether you are wanting to cover up ugly walls, or simply give the space a facelift, drape is an amazing and simple way to do so!

The last major way to transform a space is to add ceiling décor. Ceiling swag is a very popular way to give your guests the feeling that they are enclosed in a soft, billowy wedding cloud. Chandeliers can add the air of luxury and charm. Depending on their placement, they can really set the mood for special moment in during the night. Imagine a 4 tiered crystal chandelier sparkling over head as you and your love take the floor for your first dance!

Along with chandeliers, paper lanterns have made quite an impact this year. Sold in every colour under the sun, these light weight pieces are perfect for any venue. Using a variety of sizes and hanging heights, the lanterns give the illusion of a lowered ceiling making the room feel more complete.

Love Is Sweet- Have a Treat

Time to raise the bar! Although many couples still opt for the traditional wedding cake, many weddings are now featuring a sweets bar. We have worked with many couples who have decided against a typical 3 tiered wedding cake and instead chosen a small 8-10 inch cake for the ceremonial cutting and bite sized treats for their guests.

Candy bars have been popular for ages as they are low maintenance and a huge crowd pleaser. Depending on the season, you may want to treat your guests to a holiday favorite: A hot cocoa bar with different flavoured syrups, a smores bar with different chocolate and cracker options, or a popcorn bar with various seasonings.

If you are having a summer wedding and you know it will be warm, offer your guests a soda bar! If your reception is more on the adult side, offer a cigar bar to appease the aficionados on your guest list.

The upside to having a sweets bar at your reception, aside from pleasing your guests, is the interactive element that it adds to your special day. After the speeches and the toasts, no one wants to get stuck talking to Aunt Lucy about the good old days for 4 hours. It will get your guests up and moving and give them a great chance to mingle with people who they haven’t been sat with and maybe normally wouldn’t meet. Who knows, maybe your best man and your best friend will bond over bubble gum and you’ll get to graze on the candy bar at their reception!

Finding Inspiration

Inspiration for your wedding décor can be found in anything beautiful! From the simplest of flower arrangements to the most extravagant magazine spreads, setting the theme for your wedding is a key element to making your big day a beautiful success.
Prior to diving straight in to the design, we first needed to choose a layout for our room. Choosing which style of table to go with is the first big step! We decided to use the traditional round tables which seat up to 8 people. Originally we were going to do the same design for each table, but once we saw the space and realized that we could really expand on the selection of product we had to choose from, we decided to do 8 unique tables that all fit the same theme.

Like any modern bride knows, Pinterest is a great place to find inspiration for the big day! We searched through many a theme and colour before deciding on our colour pallet. Pastels and sequins are huge this year and continuing into next year so we combined the best of both worlds and picked a blush, gold, black, and ivory colour pallet to get us started.

When designing the tables, we wanted to include as many elements as we could to try and appeal to as many different bridal styles as we possibly could! We recognized that rustic is, and probably always will be a re-occurring theme as we do live in Saskatchewan, so we wanted to pay homage to that with a couple of different tables that reflect our local style. We love the use of multiple candles and props that can be found at home to add a special little touch, like the photo albums underneath the cylinder vases.

We were truly inspired by a photograph of a black and ivory lace wedding invitation and really wanted to centre the head table and a few of the guest tables around that look. Using bold patterned cloth and delicate touches with black lace ribbon, we were able to create a look that is both glamourous and flirtatious.
No matter what you decide for your wedding décor, make sure it reflects you and your partner’s personal style and includes unique touches and subtle reminders of your love!
