I live on a medium sized suburban homestead in the Midwestern US. This is a spot to share things I grow and make, with a focus on small spaces, tight budgets, and sustainability.

I am a solid month late on starting anything and I have exactly 1/3 of my potatoes in. Farmer sadness.

The best available window is in the room I’m not done remodeling, so at the end of last fall I had to chuck all the big outdoor succulents in the corner with the half-stripped wallpaper and an overhead grow bulb. These guys are even more ready for spring than I am.

indoor sprouts are sprouting! Collards are off to a roaring start, and the first tomato just popped up in the last 45 minutes.

Also: all of these are made from yarn that I harvested by hand from old, worn out sweaters. Neat!

Farmer Side of Tumblr, reporting for duty:
That’s a sweet potato, not a regular potato. If you break the tentacles off right where they connect to the original potato and put them in water, they’ll grow roots and vines and pretty leaves, and then you can plant them in soil to get more sweet potatoes or just keep them as a house plant that will live in a vase of water. I can’t promise they aren’t hunting, but I haven’t been so much as casually nibbled on by one so far, so I think as long as you keep them watered, you’ll be fine. The leafy form doesn’t seem to be carnivorous at all. They do have a lot of oxalates in the leaves, so you need to make sure none of your animal house pets eat them. Maybe that’s where the rumors are from.

#yes I DID have a whole milk crate of these do this last fall#the little plants are really pretty and cool#and they grow super fast#great science classroom demo for propagating plants#also definitely keep the leaves away from your house critters#I'm not joking about that at all
