Szumin: The House of Zofia & Oskar Hansen
Culture.pl takes a tour of the remarkable home of two pioneers of architecture: Zofia and Oskar Hansen.
This wooden house in Mazowsze by a picturesque oxbow lake of the Bug, is the spatial incarnation of Open Form, the architectural concept Oskar Hansen communicated through his work. Built in 1968, the house embodies Open Form in full, being one of a handful of works by the Hansens made in complete agreement with their wishes, without the typical limitations thrown onto architects during the socialist period where unnecessary rules held back their visions.
The space-time architecture that smoothly links the interior and exterior can be incrementally and easily adjusted according to the needs and desires of its inhabitants. Built as a structure for life, it is invigorated by the presence of people. The Hansen home in Szumin is the only Polish building on the prestigious Iconic Houses Network list.

mentor Ewa Maria Śmigielska MA | Prof. Grzegorz Kowalski, date 10.10.2017, participants: students of Prof. Zeng Tu, Prof. Jiao Xingtao, Prof. Zeng Lingxiang, Prof. Wang Tianxiang / Sichuan Fine Arts Institute: Wu Qinghe, Lv Shuqi, Zhang Zhenzhu, Liu Jia, Liu Yong, Lai Yanjun, Fu Yu,WuDi, Zhu Xianfan, Chen Juren, Lu Hua, Long Xingyu, Yi Ke, Wang Wei, LiuJingyu, Yan Yipeng, Huang Ao, Geng Zhi.
This workshop involved teamwork and focused on the topographic and morphological setting of space as well as climate conditions (the wind). Two different types of materials were suggested to research the spatial conditions in the WangJiaWan valley: black and white sticks of a height of 3.5 m and 100 m white and black strips of cotton fabric. In the first exercise, the black and white sticks were used. The participating students spontaneously ventured out to find a function for their use i.e. as a measuring device for the depth of a ditch, the current of the river or the water flow direction. In the second exercise, the black and white strips of fabric were put to use. The participating students spontaneously divided themselves into two groups – black and white. The narration was greatly improvised to show each group emphasising the two parallel river banks and subsequently lead to their union through the river current. The black group greeted the white group in what seemed a natural act of coming together. The last act took place in a hotel courtyard: the students’ natural bond provoked close physical contact, additionally emphasized by them being tied with the fabric.

mentor Ewa Maria Śmigielska MA, date 30.10.2017, participants students of Prof. Zheng Tu / Sichuan Fine Arts Institute: Zhu Xianfan, Chen Ling, Cao Yi, Geng Zhi, Da Chong, Jiang Jiao, Hu Hang, Gu Fangyuan, PengYukai, Zhang Zhenzhu, Zhang Yaofang, Jiang Yanqiao, Zhou Yuxian, Ren Xiaoyu, Yang Yajuan. The aim of this workshop was to provoke a dialogue without words. The participating students, after the introduction and a series of short tasks, were given 100 metres of white and black cotton fabric which they were to use. Their task was to create a visual dialogue in three different places – at the riverside, on the roof with a view onto the city and a traditional Chinese house. The participating students divided into groups engaged in a dialogue with the landscape, the architectonic space of the Chinese house, and spatiotemporal relations. The video documentation presents the students’ work – a dialogue held with the use of artistic forms that incorporated the surrounding space and occurrences resulting from the activity. The answer to this task was the process of shaping the forms created from black and white fabric in relation to the surrounding natural environment. At some point, the students were joined by the nearby playing children. The participating students showed great openness and easily engaged in the process of provoking a dialogue with space.

Former Cult Member Hears Music For The First Time
Kristoffer Borgli directs this Sundance Film Festival-selected mockumentary
"I want to flag the problems with sanctimonious altruism in journalism and the media," says the LA-based director whose film was selected for Sundance, Clermont-Ferrand and Vimeo Staff Pick. Discussing social-first content and viral-ready clips, he describes them as “shallow, seemingly humanistic, seemingly well-meaning journalistic endeavours.”
