This cycle of feelings is safe to feel about a work of fiction, but the problem is we feel it all the time, these days. The news carries the pollen of violence out of the blooming mouths of politicians and it drifts across the country, seeding so many radical terrorists. What might be just a troubled youth, suddenly becomes an empowered monster. And thus we live in a land that more represents some fantasia of fear than the qualities we like to believe make us human. There are so many statistics in today’s world that it’s easy to ignore them. It’s easy to revert right back to whatever elicits the strongest emotional response. Often this is a convenient bending, perhaps even breaking of the truth. It’s a soapbox, a myopic snarling self-centeredness. US and THEM. And this fear is weaponized as easily as nuclear fission, with results just as damaging for our fragile existence as a species. Perhaps we forgot the lessons of conflict that two World Wars taught previous generations. Perhaps we forgot how nationalism is just another fancy justification for violence and enslavement. They are different, so they don’t deserve to be treated the way we would prefer to be treated. And the industries that represent all the various layers of the media-sphere benefit from our outrage. And the industries fueling the manufacture and dissemination of military grade weaponry make a killing, both figuratively and literally. And we tell ourselves that we have no choice, that madness is the arithmetic of our age. At the center of the human experience are humans, and we are more similar than any of us care to admit. The only way we will save ourselves is if we can hunt those similarities down. Anger will always end in violence. Violence will always end in destruction. Guns will always take lives. Soooo much gratitude for our incredibly supportive creative community! This weekend in San Diego we did a Sidewalk Project on the street that included art, music, donations and harm reduction. We also had a gorgeous art show curated by @romanticrockemily and connected with so many special people with Punk Rock & Paintbrushes. We wrapped up the weekend with a CPR/First Aid training certification for the #SidewalkFamily and discussed #Narcan and harm reduction hosted by @sparky_fett & taught by @moesey76. We may have depended on the medical profession to save a life of a loved one only to experience the crushing disappointment of loss. It’s not the fault of the medical professionals who work so hard to save lives; the forces of sickness & disaster are sometimes stronger than modern medicine. Politics, God, family dynamics, shame & embarrassment, the need for dignity, life & death, celebration and grief all play out their dramas in the surgical theater and bathrooms, exam rooms and recovery rooms.
