BAY AREA! Budget approval for the tax incentive is going up for vote today, and some city officials are fighting the idea of creating local jobs. We need people to CALL IN before 1pm or COME THROUGH today at 1 to the city council meeting! Details are in my stories - take 5 minutes and let the city council of Oakland know that we want more jobs here for locals! Film productions can spend MILLIONS in a city when they shoot here, and so many of our filmmakers are going elsewhere. That’s hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars not going to local businesses. Reposted from @wkamaubell Today, Texas banned abortion after 6 weeks. This effectively bans abortion completely, because Texas lawmakers know that many don’t even know that they are pregnant until after 6 weeks. Texas also knows this law targets Black and Latino Texans, especially poor folks. This law will be completely meaningless if you are white and have money. That means the lawmakers who passed this will continue to get all the abortions they need. And in addition to everything else wrong with this, the new law MAKES IT LEGAL TO SUE SOMEONE WHO IN ANY WAY IS INVOLVED WITH SOMEONE GETTING AN ABORTION. If you are the friend or family of someone getting an abortion and you know they are getting an abortion then you could be sued. And not sued by the state. You could be sued by any random individual who knows you didn’t try to stop the abortion. This could even apply to an Uber driver who took someone to the abortion. This is the same state that says you can’t tell people to wear a bit of cloth on their face to stop a pandemic. This is also why Texas just passed new restrictive voting laws. They have to stop the will of the Black and Latino people so they can pass other laws like this. rafaelcasal | Had a beautiful night last night at @oaklandmuseumca talking with the smarties @wkamaubell @favianna1 about bringing jobs to Oakland and the East Bay, by getting tax incentives for films and tv shows that shoot here, and even bigger incentives for creators from here who use local businesses, facilities and staffing. The entertainment industry has created huge economic hubs in Atlanta, Vancouver and more, why not here? We have the talent, we have the will, but we need to incentivize big budgets to come here to employ carpenters, restaurants, offices, union workers, set designers, graphic artists, lighting designers etc. All these amazing jobs that provide healthcare and a path to home ownership for folks who were raised here. We have started the East Bay Film Collective, running out of Kamau Bell’s organization, to make this a reality for the local art scene. We are the Bay, we do it for ourselves, we get it out our own soil and last night was a beautiful conversation in how to create more employment opportunities in the arts for our community. Above: Georgia Governor Brian Kemp makes it harder for the people who turned Georgia blue to keep it blue the next time they vote. He is doing this by signing Senate Bill 202. SB202 imposes new voter ID requirements, limits drop boxes and institutes other restrictions. And many GOP’ers think it didn’t go far enough. Note that he is surrounded by nothing but white men. (What was Ben Carson not available to make it look ever so slightly less racist?) And apparently they are standing in front of a painting of a plantation. Below: Georgia Representative @parkcannon58 is being arrested for the crime of trying to walk into the room where that bill is being signed. Find the video of you need proof. She walked up the door and these police arrested her for the “crime” of wanting to be in the room where the laws were being signed, which Is her job. She was charged with TWO FELONIES!!! I stand with Park Cannon! You can’t make it make sense. Kemp is doing this so he can get out of Trump’s doghouse AND because he knows @staceyabrams is coming for his job next time around.
