Avatar OC Week: Day One

Relationships 

I decided to draw my characters Zhi (left) and Anik (right) for the “relationships” prompt. Zhi and Anik are characters that I’ve had for quite a while now. They’re a quirky couple from around year 490 A.G. They live in the former United Republic, in what used to be Republic City. Anik is a Spirit Healer, a specialized healing profession that came about because of the massive pollution in their country. Anik and Zhi met each other when she came into his practice as a patient and they slowly began to hangout outside of the treatment sessions. They fell in love over a mutual interest in helping others and were married in TuiLa, formerly The Northern Water Tribe, where Anik grew up. Zhi has a strong and passionate disposition which is nicley complimented by her husband’s gentle and compassionate nature. Zhi herself is a professor of archeology, with a focus on ancient water tribe civilizations, and grew up in what used to be Republic City (I really need to figure out a name for it). Zhi has a passion for conspiracy theories, that miraculously always turn out to be true, and Anik is a connoisseur of cartoons others deem far too basic for adults. He watches them nonetheless.

This location was really fun to make. It’s based on the idea of strip mall dojo/yoga centers. In this era, most air nomads, from two of the remaining three temples, do not leave their temples except on rare occasions. However, a few wished to make the spiritual and bending teaching of the monks available to the world, so they opened up small places like this to teach the mediation and spiritual principles, as well as the bending forms, of the air nomads. Most people come to learn meditation and breath control, as the pollution of the world has caused many lung problems in the current population. This particular one is run by Jamyang, a 23 year old air bending master way ahead of her years in spiritual knowledge, and is in the fire nation and the spot used to be a fire bending dojo. Also it may be hard to see but she does have a side shave. Her hair is loosely based on Tibetan styles because she’s the kind of person to modernize at her discretion.

Since the revival of air benders in the world, many people born as air benders do not necessarily want to become nomads. This group are known as “settlers” by some nomads who disapprove of their integration into other countries and cultures. The temples themselves will allow anyone to take refuge within their walls. The southern air temple is the only temple were it is common for nomads to come and go. Nomads that wish to isolate themselves from the world generally go to the western and eastern temple for this reason. For a time air nomads traveled the world trying to help minimize pollution but after years of the air quality worsening, they retreated to their temples.

A note on the northern air temple

After the destruction of the northern air temple, at the hands of the red lotus, it was rebuilt and updated with all modern technology. However, during a later war it would again be destroyed and abandoned. After the end of the war the Air Nation would sell the land to Ba Sing Se, now a country in its own right, in order to buy biospheres to protect the remaining three temples from air pollution.

Hi friends… (>_<) dfsjkbjksdf I feel like I’m in trouble haha I’ve been bad about posting the last two three months. I’m sorry if I’m disappointing you guys – figuring out my new job, adjusting to a new city, getting the Legend of Genji Development Team off the ground, etc. has taken up most of my time and energy. The writing team is making excellent progress, though! We have extremely creative, ambitious people on the team, and they’ve already exceeded my expectations. This project is going to be something special. I’m working through some stuff, and I’m hoping I’ll have more energy in the coming weeks to be more interactive and responsive! To everyone who has sent a chat or a message, I’m sorry for ghosting – seeing the mountain of asks and messages is just overwhelming and I’m hiding from it, haha! I wrote it yesterday and I’ll write it again (and again): it’s been an absolute pleasure working in the room with Mike again. @michaeldantedimartino We’re only in the *very early* stages of development on this live-action adaptation, and right now it’s just a crew of us two, with some great execs and staff at Netflix helping us formulate the production plan. This is a recent photo from my private studio I’ve rented since the end of Korra, but I’ve already started packing it up, moving my music gear home, and getting ready to move a bunch of my furniture and books into our new offices at Netflix very soon.
