Two things:
1. I don't mind what the film is about. You have either misread my words or chose not to read them at all.
There is nothing wrong with having the film be a gender identity allegory. I've been very clear that my grievance with this film is that it is severely undermined (rather, outright ruined) by piss-poor live action work - Colin's strength is clearly in animation, and so he could've made the entire thing work in animation alone with the same plot, message, and everything. It'd be better for it. What a shame that we don't live in a world where that happened.
2. I'm not complaining that this is a bad student film. I'm complaining that this bad student film is getting as much attention (and asspats) as it's getting, as well as the fact that my expectations were trampled upon (and not in a good, artful way).
Capiche?

revolutionary activist rhetoric will always meet a standstill in the face of the average person's will to not die. generally speaking, most people want to continue living and not get hurt doing so. i think this is very important for people on this site to understand

Wow, look, so extensive.
You're right, this totally screams "crapass live action film" much more than "faithful mahou shoujo homage". No idea what I was thinking

I'm someone who doesn't matter, just like you.
I'm entitled to shout my opinion, however flawed it may be, to anyone I want. It's not like it's ever going to reach the artist anyway. Colin doesn't care, and even if he did, he has shown he doesn't fold under the weight of criticism.
And don't get me wrong, I am not "personally slighted" by this. It's more of an issue of "wow, this guy is incredibly talented - talented enough to do something groundbreaking, and he ended up doing the opposite. ouch." It's never fun seeing someone with amazing ability put out an absolute stinker like this. It's dismaying.
The crux of the issue, however, is that most student films are like this. Most student films are awkward and bad, with a kernel of potential enclosed within. The only thing that sets Colin's apart is that everyone's eyeballs are on it right now, and now people are flocking to it in droves, either treating it like it's the second coming of Christ or the worst thing ever wrought by mankind, when it is neither. It is getting way more attention than it probably needs or even deserves, and that is creating the situation you're seeing here. I would not wish this type of scrutiny on any student making a thesis, but I also reject the narrative that Colin is just some confused, helpless little baby who didn't know what they were doing by promoting this film the way they did.

i'm not gonna mince words here - this is 1 minute 25 seconds of good animation (and some uncomfortable panty shots) with 6 minutes of aggressively mediocre live action student film tacked onto it.
and you're right - "edgy deconstruction" is not exactly what this project is. however, you should be able to intuit what i actually meant by thinking about it for a second.
i'm glad the film and its themes (thats kind of all it has) resonated with you and others. my personal experience in the literal two years leading up to the release of this project set me up with an expectation that Colin was going to give us something different than this. people came away from this film in droves feeling the same kind of disappointment - and I know a good portion of them aren't just reactionaries being reactionaries.
the film is heartfelt, sure. it's just not the kind of heartfelt i was expecting

seeing "is this how i find out" in my notes when i post about world news is so funny. you either learn it through the destiel meme or through tumblr user infectiouspiss. none of those "news sites" no they're full of misinformation, unlike tumblr dot com.

I think there's a point at which one can think about something too hard
Heard an interview on NPR of a 'small mother-daughter hair accessories company, working from the dining room table at home...' thats business will be affected by the tariffs because 'we manufacture in China!'!!! And if one good thing comes of these horrible stupid tariffs I hope it stops all these American 'small business owners 🥺' from obfuscating their participation in imperial exploration. And I hope everyone finally processes that all the fanart acrylic keychains and plushies of niche microcelebrities ocs that are just 'supporting small artists!!' are manufactured in the same way everything else is thats consumed by this ugly country is.

The internet has failed because there are far too many normal people on it.
Back in the day, the internet was the place you would go when you had a massive, all-consuming passion for, I dunno, skunk women with huge titties. Shit that would scare the hoes. Normal people hadn't figured out computers yet so you had a lot of people who all kind of shared this slight air of repugnance while also all being incredibly wise. It wasn't always pleasant but it was, at the very least, never boring.
So let's say you were that guy who had such a cloying affinity for skunk titties that it made you into a neighborhood pariah. Your life was over, basically. But you'd go on the internet and there'd be like 5,000 other guys on there who not only say "actually, skunk titties ARE fucking awesome" but there would also be little societies built around it. Hierarchies. In fact we once had a dude at the top of the skunk titties food chain. A "king of skunk titties" if you will. A Skunk Titty Savant. His name was Eric W. Schwartz.
Uhh, the point is that when all the normal people flooded this place, all that shit kind of ceased to be. Internet's no longer a secret club for weirdos. Now it's kind of just another fucking supermarket, honestly, and that's sad.
You've got people plodding around listlessly with their carts full of likes, maybe a re-(tweet/blog/share) here or there. The most social interaction happens in passing, fleeting pleasantries that never go anywhere because there are too many goddamn people, so everyone's interests are too different and granular for any common ground to be found. One user has Taylor Swift autism, the other's into semiautomatic rifles. Millions of fundamentally incompatible people with infinitely high chances of running into more fundamentally incompatible people.
Is there a point where a society becomes too big to be a society? That's where it seems we're at.
Personally, I think we ought to confiscate all the iPhones and throw them into a volcano, or something, probably.

the whole tomodachi life "giant mii" screenshot redraw art meme circulating right now confirms to me a long-held suspicion that tumblr artists can, in fact, draw in appealing styles, but simply choose not to most of the time
