Love Lost And Found
Sonhia Nadhia
Like the wave that ebbs and flows Like the wind that shifts and blows With the shadows of doubt, you left Doors closed, a heartbreak at its best!
A love that was lost, but never forgotten Years of misery for a promise that's broken Lonely nights and countless cries Covering the pain with foolish lies
But once again, our hearts collided A second chance, our souls united A love that was played by destiny Never again, will it suffer under a wistful melody.

Social Media and Its Effects on Adolescents’ Brain
Sonhia Nadhia
In today’s generation, almost everyone owns a mobile phone wherein they regularly check their social media accounts. Even toddlers at the age of 3 are knowledgeable on how to operate such devices. Thus, as they grow older, there is an impact to them, which can lead to unfavorable behaviors.

According to a research project from University of Pittsburgh and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, the adolescent brain is specifically known for its plasticity, that is, it changes, responds, and adapts a lot quicker to its environment. As researchers conduct more studies on the adolescent brain and how fast it reacts and adapts to the things happening to and occurring around the adolescent, they’ve theorized that this plasticity may be part of the significant increase of mental illnesses appearing during adolescence, including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Therefore, social media has indeed had a major part on the behaviors of these teenagers. They tend to spend most of their time on their Instagram or Facebook accounts resulting to lack of sleep, less focus, less family time and socialization, etc. In addition, as was mentioned above, mental illness becomes prevalent. Depression is known to be the enemy of most adolescents worldwide. At such age, they are more prone to be depressed; wherein they lock themselves out from the physical world, and they tend to engage themselves online through their social media accounts.
Researchers are just beginning to establish a link between depression and social media. While they have not actually discovered a cause and effect relationship between social media and depression, they have discovered that social media use can be associated with an intensification of the symptoms of depression, including a decrease in social activity and an increase in loneliness.

For instance, a study published in Computers in Human Behavior found that the use of multiple social media sites is more strongly associated with depression than the amount of time spent online. According to the study, people who used more than seven social media platforms had more than three times the risk of depression than people who used two or fewer sites.
Several additional studies have shown that the prolonged use of social media may be related to the signs and symptoms of depression as well as low self-esteem, especially in children.
In conclusion, social media may seem harmless, but once we get engaged in such platform with multiple accounts like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc., it is more likely that we get addicted, and may not survive a day without checking them. It already became a part of our daily routines wherein our muscle memory automatically does the work.

ABS-CBN Struggles for a Franchise Renewal
Sonhia Nadhia
Philippines is recognized for having the most liberated press in Asia, where the media helps in maintaining the checks and balances of the government; thus, it is known as the “fourth estate” and the “watchdog” of the country. However, despite of being free, Philippines is ironically ranked as one of the most dangerous countries for journalists.
Recently, the issue of the ABS-CBN franchise renewal has alarmed not only individuals in the media industry, but also the supporters of the network. ABS-CBN broadcast network is one of the oldest and most influential media networks in the Philippines, which is owned by the Lopez family.
Last February 10, 2020, Solicitor General Jose Calida filed a quo warranto petition before the Supreme Court against ABS-CBN’s franchise claiming that the corporation is offering paid broadcasts without the government’s approval, and by allegedly allowing foreign ownership of the giant network. However, ABS-CBN stated that all their broadcast offerings, including KBO, have received the necessary government and regulatory approvals and are not prohibited by their franchise.

ABS-CBN’s Answers to all of Calida’s Accusations:
ACCUSATION #1: Kapamilya Box Office (KBO) is illegal because ABS-CBN offered it as a pay-per-view product without the proper permits from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), therefore a violation of its franchise.
ANSWER: It was ABS-CBN Convergence that offered KBO as a value-added-service. Convergence, the comment said, "sought and obtained NTC approvals."
ACCUSATION #2: The NTC ordered ABS-CBN in 2019 to refrain from offering pay-per-view services.
ANSWER: The NTC actually "approved" its pay-per-view service in the said 2019 order, but imposed a condition that its service "shall be subject to such Conditional Access guidelines that the Commission or any other relevant government agency may hereafter issue."
ACCUSATION #3: Pay-per-view is in itself illegal because franchise holders are not allowed to derive income other than from its paid advertisements.
ANSWER: ABS-CBN cited Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra's legal opinion issued to NTC upon request in 2018, saying that "we find it clear enough that broadcast companies can engage in Conditional Access (CA) or Conditional Access System (CAS) and, for the same reason, can offer TV pay-per-view services."
ABS-CBN quoted, “The Office of the Solicitor General’s filing of quo warranto case against ABS-CBN on alleged violations of its franchise appears to be an effort to shut down ABS-CBN to the serious prejudice of millions of Filipinos who rely on the network for news, entertainment and public service. ABS-CBN complies with all the pertinent laws governing its franchise and has secured all necessary government and regulatory approvals for its business operations.”

Consequently, on May 5,2020, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has issued a “cease and desist” order against ABS-CBN due to the expiration of its congressional franchise on May 4, 2020.
A cease and desist letter puts a person or business on notice that they are engaging in illegal activities, and if they do not stop, they will pursue legal actions.
Thus, due to the cease and desist order, the giant network had to immediately close its 42 television stations across the country, including the main ABS-CBN network, ABS-CBN Sports and Action, ten digital broadcast channels, 18 FM stations, and five A.M stations.
This July 10, 2020, the House committee on legislative franchise denied the network for a fresh license to operate with a voting of 70-11. Therefore, we can say that ABS-CBN has already met its death with its objective to stand and fight for press freedom. Nevertheless, who knows what the future might bring.

Self Help for Mental Health
Sonhia Nadhia
“No visible symptoms, no runny nose, just a head full of darkness. No fever or rash, no fractures or sprains, just a longing for something unable to explain.” – HealthyPlace.com
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a massive unfavorable impact to the people around the world, which caused fear and distress to all. Being quarantined or locked inside the house is a must for everybody’s safety, which for some, may be a terrifying situation. Anxiety attacks, increasing level of loneliness, traumatic stress, isolation, and loss of hope are some of things that individuals are battling right now.
Tumblr media
During the duration of this quarantine, I myself have struggled to remain mentally and emotionally healthy. I am not saying that I am depressed, but I have been experiencing various emotions that I could not contain. There are times that I feel so worthless, and I often cry myself to sleep. There are also times that I feel so scared and worried without known reasons. I experience sleep paralysis twice a week, and I often have nightmares. I also had this feeling of being physically drained in the morning. I don’t know why, but I just feel like I had a very tiring activity the day before, although I really did not do anything. I had all these during the second month of the quarantine.
Moreover, I always feel nostalgic about my high school days. I don’t wanna be in college. It feels like I am not yet ready for this. I really could not move on from high school, especially senior high. I had my best memories during those times, that I want to experience them again with the same people I have met. The same classmates, same teachers, same enemies, same friends. Thus, when I keep on thinking about those memories I had, I just open my external drive and view all those happy pictures and videos that I kept, and I will automatically feel okay.
I don’t know how to explain this spectrum of emotions that I am having, but I want to share some coping mechanisms to manage these uncomfortable feelings.
How to Cope with Unexplained Emotions During This Quarantine Period:
Reach out to other people
Do not battle alone. Tell what you are feeling to your friends or people whom you are comfortable with. Share those negative thoughts and seek advice. Trust me. Surrounding yourself with good people who can understand you and your nonsense dramas will help you heal, and will make everything less overwhelming.
Tumblr media
Do not let that feeling devour you
If you keep on welcoming those negative energies and thoughts, it would only make it worse. Avoid listening to sad music that would make you more depressed. Try listening to pop music or any genre that would boost your emotions.
Be optimistic
Allowing yourself to find light in the dark is not that difficult. There is always a way to turn negative things into something positive. For example, being criticized by people with uncontrollable mouths would really hurt, but if you will make it as a driving force to do more and improve, you will find yourself stronger and better than before.
Find a Hobby
“Keep yourself busy if you want to avoid depression. For me, inactivity is the enemy.” – Matt Lucas
Find a hobby that interests you like taking care of plants or a pet. Do not shut yourself away from the world, and stay in your room for the whole day. Keeping yourself busy with something that you like or enjoy would at least lessen your worries.
Connect with Nature
Being with nature is the best feeling among all. The calmness and scenery of nature can provide peace of mind. Going for a hike or camping into the woods would be a great choice. However, this would only be applicable to people who are not in the city, and do not have any COVID-19 cases in their area. Well, it all depends on the location.
Tumblr media
Mental health is very important to everyone. It shouldn’t be neglected nor ignored. We all have our own personal battles, but it does not mean that we keep it only to our self. Seeking advice or finding support does not hurt. Let us all be mentally and emotionally healthy.
“Just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you, doesn’t mean you can, should, or need to do it alone.” – Lisa Olivera
