Achilles & Patroclus (2021)

Of all the art I've made, this is one of my most beloved pieces. I also created a plate version for a double-sided acrylic standee that had one side in the red-figure and the other in black-figure style painting.

Also I've never really spoke about it before, but I always wanted to make a Hector and Andromache piece to pair with this. Never got around to it, but maybe one day I will.

I summon Achilles lovers and artists!

I know the thematic of Achilles and Patroclus is famous and sweet or the mourning of Achilles over his dead body but I think there is one part that I rarely ever see being depicted! And that is from the 23rd rhapsody of Iliad and more specifically the funeral of Patrolcus!

And just like a father is wailing while burning the bones of his just married son, whose death has brought great grief to his parents, similarly Achilles was wailing while burning the bones of his companion, crawling on the ground next to the pyre, groaning inconsolably

Like...my heart!!!! My heart!!!!

Like I imagined so many cool monologs and such that Achilles has given even in the middle of his grief and the way he speaks to Patroclus in rage about what he shall bring to him for his funeral and after the rage he expressed in his duel with Hector and all but once his companion's bones were in the fire then all his "cool attitude" melted down and he collapsed crying seeing the body, the corpse he had been clasping on for days, now being burnt consumed by fire...

He collapses on the ground...crawling on it, seeing the flames consuming what's left of Patroclus...stripping him down the bones... That body he guarded like no other treasure is now being reduced to ashes and bones! Honestly...I haven't seen many people drawing this!

Also I find it no coincidence that Homer describes his mourning not as a lover mourning another but like a father mourning his son! Like someone who saw a precious person they created and catered all their life being lost in the flames of the funeral...and on the happiest occasion of youth; the wedding! I think that is no coincidence and shows the profound bond between Achilles and Patroclus being more than just one type of love!!!!
