Me *sits down and has lengthy talk with my mother about respecting my boundaries and working on my anxiety at my pace*
Mother *nods along and agrees*
Me "So you'll let me decide the pace to work on my anxiety?"
Mother "No, I'm going to do double the amount of things that make you anxious until you forcibly heal."
Me "That's...not at all what I said. That's going to make my mental health worse..."
Mother "Nonsense, you'll be perfectly fine. Once you see that, I can do TRIPLE the things you're anxious about and youll be totally healed." :)
Me " That's not how that- You know what, nevermind. You're not listening"

Writing a Blind or Visually Impaired Character
A Multi-Step Guide Written by a Visually Impaired Writer and Blogger
I’m hoping this blog will over time develop its own following, and when it does people will inevitably see my bio and notice what I included: I’m visually impaired.
Yes, a visually impaired writer, and I’ve written with two blind characters before so I have some practice in the field.
So, inevitably, someone is going to ask how to write a blind character.
Or, at least, I hope you’ll ask someone who’s actually blind or visually impaired about writing a blind character before you get too involved with your new WIP.
All parts will be tagged #blindcharacter in my blog, and I will add links to every post as I finish each part. Follow my blog for more writing advice.
Note, this post updates fairly often and old versions are still floating around out there. The most current version of this post is pinned to my blog with any new guides or links you might of missed.
As of 24 January 2021, this is the most extensive and screen reader friendly version of this post.
Part One: Crafting the Blind Character
In which I tell you how to begin making a blind character who is more than a cardboard cutout
Part Two: Narrative Choice, Visual Description, Verbal Description, Social Interaction
In which I give you a basic rundown on how to write from the perspective of a character who can’t see and still make the narration descriptive
Part Three: Tropes and Clichés to Avoid
Your blind readers will thank you for not being the 5000th person to do this and manage to actually finish your story. (Do you have any idea how many stories I’ve noped out of within two chapters because of these clichés? A Lot.)
-New- Part Four: Canes, Guide Dogs, and O&M
Everything I can tell you about 1) how to learn how to use a cane 2) how a cane works 3) how to describe what your character experiences with their cane 4) everything I know on guide dogs
Part Five: Small Aspects of being Blind You Never Thought Of
5 January 2021 Edit: This link has been fixed to correspond with the correct post
Or, really, very normal everyday things for blind people, the inclusion of which will make your characters more real and authentic. It’s the tiny details.
Part Six: Should You Cure Your Character’s Blindness? (Short Answer: No)
There’s no way to write a cure for your blind character that doesn’t make blind readers hate you. Sorry. We came here to finally experience a relatable character who experiences the world like us, but none of us are getting cured so seeing this character we learned to love become something alien from us in the end feels like a slap in the face
Why I’m Blind and What I See -NEW-
I thought I’d finally make a post explaining the complicated situation about my vision. Includes an explanation of visual snow and exotropia, two of the three causes for my vision issues.
Writing Blind Characters Falling in Love, an Advice Post:
Someone asked what being blind and falling in love have to do with each other. Honestly, blindness changes your perspective on everything and it makes an impact on every relationship you have. This includes some things that you definitely do not want your character’s love interest to be/do.
Writing Blind Jokes (Should You Do It?)
You know those flow charts of “should you do x?” going around? It’s like that, but screen reader friendly. Should you write blind jokes. It’s pretty complicated and there are a lot of possible scenarios and details to consider.
Advice for Writing Toph Beifong -NEW-
In this I discuss what I would like to see done in fanfiction with Toph’s character after ten years of reading Avatar the Last Airbender fanfiction
A small essay addressing the frequently asked question on giving your blind character a superpower to help them “see.”
It’s became a popular question, so to make the answer easier/faster for everyone to access, I wrote what will usually be my initial answer. Below there are a few links to some notable past questions on this subject.
Mourning My Vision, it’s More than Depression.
A small personal essay addressing the nuances of the mourning period you experience with a new disability. The mourning period is mentioned in other guides, but this is more detailed.
Dealing with Heightened Senses, a video by Molly Burke with additional commentary by me
While Molly talks about the myths and truths about heightened senses, I talk about the correlation with blindness and neuro-divergency and how co-morbid disorders/disabilities might affect sensory processing.
Satirical Commentary on the phrase “that blank look in their eyes” used too often in fiction to identify a blind character
a:tla, I’m looking at you (and my eyes aren’t blank)
I Found a Lost Piece of Blindness History
My grandmother told me about her blind aunt and how she sent letters. It led me to speculate about all the O&M things people develop on their own but never get a chance to pass onto other blind people. Technology and techniques are lost in history and reinvented, including the white cane ad guide dogs.
Includes a little history on the introduction of guide dogs into the 20th century

do you have advice for writing mutual pining, grumpy/sunshine stories from a first person pov? i personally don't like third person but still want to convey that the attraction is mutual while writing from only one characters POV
Hi :)
I am personally not the biggest fan of first person POV, because it limits your options sometimes. But it doesn't have to keep you from writing your story like that. To convey mutual pining in first person POV, I would say that you have to think about how you can tell someone is pining and how someone could miss those clues.
The character who's story we follow likes Person B, but doesn't think that Person B likes them back. If you want to show that Person B, in fact, does like them back, you can let them say one thing, but do something. For example, they say that they are really not into Person A's favourite hobby, but then they completely support Person A with it. Or they are doing something for Person A while saying that's just what friends do, but then they don't do that for their other friends.
Those things can all be signals for the reader that the pining is actually mutual and that Person A is just too caught up in thinking that their crush is not reciprocated that they overlook those signals.
So even in first person POV there are still a lot of ways to show the reader someone else's intentions, even though the 'narrator' didn't pick up on them.
Good luck!

Helloooo! Do you have a particular method or tips for when creating and developing a character?
Hi :)
Sorry this took me some time, but there is so much I could talk about here. So I try to go with some basics.
How to create a character
Make a character sheet
some examples for what I usually try to find out about my characters, regardless which genre I’m writing in
basics
name, age, place of birth, where they live, nationality, ethnicity, education, occupation, religious affiliation, financial status, gender identity, sexual orientation
physical appearance
eye, hair and skin colour
distinguishing features (tattoos, birthmarks, scars, visible disabilities,...)
height and weight (proportions!)
walk (slow, fast, skipping,...)
tics and mannerisms (touching their face, blinking, grinding their teeth,...)
speech patterns and communication style
talk (slow, fast, slurred etc.)
accents and dialects
using slang, sounding educated, trying to hide a dialect/accent etc.
do they talk with their whole body? (gestures?)
extra question for speech and physical appearance: can people tell where the character is coming from and what influences they have from their heritage?
past and present
how did they grow up?
happy memories
academic career
hobbies
past trauma or important turning points that still influence their life
specific lifestyle
social and political ideology
future
dreams and goals
expectations from themself and from outside
Relationship maps
for longer stories it’s even more important to understand your characters relationships to each other
two different approaches:
1. proper list of family, friends, love interests, “enemies”, everyone else
family
who is still alive and where do they live?
who did they grow up with?
what was and what is their relationship?
friends
how long do they know each other?
would they trust them with a secret?
how close are they?
love interests
what is their relationship status?
what do they like about them?
is it reciprocated?
if they are not together why not?
“enemies”
how do they know each other?
what do they not like about each other?
did they always hate each other?
can their relationship become better?
2. love, like, hate categories
make a list of people your character loves (use the different forms of love: romantic, familial, friendly,...)
make a list of acquaintances
make a list of people they dislike and people who dislike them
you could even try to draw their relationships with each other
make sure you include if the relationship changes throughout your story
Those are just some basic things I could think of that I usually like to write down about my characters. Depending on the story there are some variations of this and more information about specific topics.
Pro tip for developing your characters: write short stories or little sequences with your characters that don’t neccessarily have anything to do with your story. I think of it as fanfiction of your own work. Put your characters with their intended roles and relationships in different situations and just write and let it play out. This is a good tool to find out if and how the characters work together. And it can even give you new ideas for their relationships to each other and new skills or habits for your characters. It’s basically a test run for your cast before you go into your bigger story.
And one last important thing: don’t get too stuck on an idea. Characters can sometimes develop a life of their own. You don’t always have a conscious control over them. So don’t be afraid to change it if something is not working out or you find something else that is working even better.
This took me such a long time and I hope it makes sense and helps you with your writing. Good luck!

Do you have any advice for managing a large number of characters interacting in one scene?
Hi :)
Large cast of characters interacting in one scene
first question: is each character really important for the storyline in that scene? Do they really have to be there?
if yes, what are their roles in that scene?
you have to orchestrate a scene with a lot of characters, it’s like a choreography
write down everyone’s role (you can use archetypes for this, like protagonist, antagonist, etc.)
put characters that have similar goals together in one group
focus on one character out of that group and let mostly them speak
what is at stake for each character and what do they want to get out of that scene?
with dialogue, use a lot of action - say what a person is doing while talking
this will help with distinguishing each character and helps to create a better picture on where each character is in this ‘choreography’
let it rest for a day and then re-read the scene
if you as the author don’t even know who’s speaking at some point or what someone is doing in that scene, rewrite it
I hope this is helpful and good luck!

#writinginfo save that vampire
hi!! do u have any resources or ideas for a very specific idea I have??? 😅😅 I am writing about a human who saves a vampire (person who saves them doesnt know they're a vampire) when they first meet so it sets up their soul mate au style type... relationship.. !! but I feel like a vampire wouldnt need saving from everyday stuff?? any help would be so massively appreciated xx
Hi :)
It would depend on how you would define “saving” the vampire. The human could save them from an awkward situation or a situation in which they don’t feel comfortable. Vampires are supposed to be stronger than humans, but maybe they have some kind of sickness that weakens them or their last meal was some nights ago and they’re weak because of that.
Or the vampire didn’t understand they were in some kind of dangerous situation, so the human sees them naively getting themself in trouble and saving them. Or imagine the vampire being preoccupied (looking at their phone or reading) while walking on the street, not seeing the car, train, bicycle, etc. coming their way.
Vampires are supposed to be stronger than humans and I think they’re supposed to have better senses, like hearing or smelling, but they’re not invincible and there are many different ways in which a human could save them.
And remember, the human doesn’t know they are a vampire. Maybe the human misunderstood the situation and believed they would save them, even though the vampire could’ve handled it themself or wouldn’t have been hurt like a human would’ve been.
I hope this helps!

Do you have any advices how to plan your story?
Hi :)
How to plan your story depends a lot on what kind of story you want to write.
For a novel I can recommend this article, which I actually used myself before.
If you want to go more in detail with individual scenes, you can read this article from nownovel.com, who have quite a few good articles and descriptions you can use.
I mostly start with writing down the most basic things about the characters and the plot.
Then I start to go more into detail and try to get to know my characters better, so it’s easier to predict what they would do in specific situations. That can help further your plot.
I write down the most basic plot and try to put it in a timeline, then I start to think about the starting point and possible endings and what needs to happen to get my main character from the beginning to the end. When I have this kind of a sceleton plot, I start to fill it in with specific scenes that I already know I need to further the plot and introduce my characters. I never have a complete plan before I start writing. Because as soon as I start, I will definitely change quite a few Things along the way. Sometimes I just come up with better ideas, or I find a plot hole that needs to be fixed or the character just doesn’t want to go where I wanted them to go, because through writing you get to know your own character so much better and often that changes the plot because it suddenly would be out of character for them to do or say something you had originally planned for them. But that’s ok, you need this kind of spontaneous Inspiration or creativity, otherwise you can get stuck. That’s why I only create the characters and then plan the structure of the plot with a few specific scenes, but I keep it open how I will get from one scene to the other and make it up along the way.
I hope this helps and good luck!

Do you have any writing tips or exercises for creating relationships between characters?
Hi :)
When I create new characters and I want to create a relationship between them I think about all the things they have in common and what character traits or ideologies etc. they have that don’t match and could create tension. Before writing important characters in a story together I often search for writing prompts and just write a few short stories with them in it. And often these stories have nothing to do with the actual story. I just try to find out how these characters would interact and what character traits etc. can help them become friends or whatever relationship I want for them.

Writing Games
Prompt Game (aka #Weekend Game)
Give yourself 15 minutes, get a random number between 1 and 820 and search for that prompt (search in my tags: prompt #{number}) and then start writing.
And if you already used that prompt choose another one or write it in a completely different way.
Combination Game
Choose three prompts (you can use random.org) from my blog between 1 and 820 and search for it on my blog by using #prompt [no.].
Now try to think of a way to combine all of them in one story. No matter how outlandish they seem together at first, in the end this game helps you to see them in a completely different light and to get a new multi-dimensional idea for a story.
+ if you use even more prompts;
who can fit the most prompts into a drabble or a 500 word short story?
++ if you choose prompts that at first glance don’t seem to fit together at all
Genres Game
Choose one prompt from my blog (you can use random.org) between 1 and 820 and search for it by using #prompt [no.] on my blog.
Whatever your first inspiration is, the goal of the game is to write this one prompt in as many genres as you can think of for it. Write about 5 to 10 sentences for each genre and see the different directions you can take the same prompt in.
Tropes and AUs Game
Let your followers send you a number or use a randomizer (like random.org) for this list of tropes and some of my favourite AO3 tags and/or for this AU list.
+ if you combine tropes/AUs
++ if you combine them with a prompt (between 1 and 820, search on my blog)
Drabble Game
Choose a prompt from the drabble lists and then write a short piece with precisely 100 words.
Title Games
1. Game:
Choose a title or let your followers send you some in. Write a short drabble or a full story with that title. What is the first idea that comes to your mind?
+ if you take the same title and write completely different stories/different genres with it
2. Game:
Let your followers send you the titles and then create a short summary for what a potential story would be about.
3. Game: The Alphabet Game
Choose one title for every letter in the alphabet from these lists and fill them or let your followers pick characters for you to write a story for each title with. (Inspired by evilwriter37)
Here you can find all the titles.
You can find all the prompts here.
Have fun!

Meet Cutes
A whole bunch of cute ways for your characters to meet.
losing something and the other picks it up and calls after them
it’s raining and they huddle together under a small roof
getting set up by their lovely grandmas, who always go to the same café and gush about their grandkids
being the new student, one of them gets assigned to the other person as their “buddy” to show them the new school
literally running into each other, holding drinks
getting cast in the same play/show
interviewing people on the street and with one of them it just clicks
accidently hitting the other one with a snowball meant for their friend
getting stuck in an elevator together
sitting next to each other at their mutual friends’ wedding
waiting in line at the grocery check-out, rolling their eyes at each other because the person at the front is starting drama
going camping with their families with the entrances of their tents/camper van right across from each other, so they always see each other first in the morning and end up spending all their time together
meeting as the best friends/wingmen/chaperones of their two friends who want to go out together, but not alone
getting set up together by mutual friends
being extras in a movie and having lots of fun in the background
meeting in a cinema, both there with their friends, but sitting next to each other and accidently grabbing each other’s hand when something scary happens on screen
being from different schools, they meet at a tournament, trying to win for their own school
sitting next to each other on a long bus/train ride
meeting each other at a kissing booth
getting paired up at a dance class
accidently wearing a matching costume at a party
meeting at a party that both their parents dragged them to and they’re the only teens there
going for the same book at the library
it’s raining and they decide to share an umbrella
meeting on a cruise, seeing a lot of cool places together
dancing next to each other at a concert
interviewing the other one about their new project
mistaking the other for their friend and getting embarrassed when they turn around
helping the other for their missing cat
meeting at a public reading of their favourite author
getting paired up for a project
meeting at a model united nations conference, representing countries who definitely want to work together on a resolution draft
realizing they ordered the exact same drink when they both try to grab it at the same time
working their first shift together, their schedules never matching up before
using the washing machines next to each other at the laundromat
sitting next to each other on a bumpy plane ride
meeting at a fire alarm test, having to evacuate the building
getting shipped by their fans, but they’ve never met, so they finally meet up for their fans
moving into a new apartment and realizing they can see directly into their neighbor’s window
being panelists at a con and having heard about each other a lot but never met before
getting paired up for a partner game at a friend’s party
waiting in an airport for their delayed flight
meeting at a demonstration, where they quickly form a bond over their shared interest
getting summoned to the principal’s office for different things and both waiting for their verdict
sharing a taxi, because they need to go to the same place
asking the other one to take a picture of them and their friends
meeting in the cafeteria, with no other place left
getting tasked with training their newest colleague
being booked as models for a big campaign together
meeting at a holiday resort, both with friends or family tagging along

Hand-holding
The purest form of human connection.
tiny hands in big hands
calloused hands in soft hands
cold hands in warm hands
hands with the perfect ratio to each other for hand-holding
platonic hand-holding
running their thumb over the other’s hand
dancing with their hands holding onto each other
squeezing hand for comfort and encouragement
holding hands across the table
happily doing everything with just one hand, if it means they don’t have to let go
not wanting to lose each other in a big crowd
possessive hand-holding
linking hands together during sex
grabbing hand to show them something
loosely holding onto each other’s hands, laying in one’s lap
only linking the pinkies together, not ready to let go completely
holding hands while skating
excitedly grabbing each other’s hands during a concert, jumping up and down together
playing with each other’s fingers
pressing the other’s hand against their cheek
holding hands while one is balancing on a small wall
grabbing the other’s hand to pull them back from something
holding hands under the table
only realizing it when they have to let go
standing in front of each other, holding both their hands
holding their hands above their head, fingers linked together
passionate hand-holding
grabbing the other’s hand so they don’t fall
holding hands while running through the rain
brushing against each other, linking fingers together for a second
grabbing their hand to grab their attention
not really paying attention, both doing something else, but still holding hands
bandaging the other’s hand and not quite letting go
holding hands while driving
grabbing the other’s hand to pull them back to them
unconsciously searching out each other’s hand while sleeping
not realizing they’re holding hands till someone points it out
swinging hands back and forth, skipping like children
holding hands in a museum to pull them to the next exhibition
letting go when there is an obstacle in their way and immediately grabbing each other’s hand again when they pass it
loosely holding onto each other’s hand
dragging the other with them, holding their hand
raising the other’s hand to their lips to kiss it softly
holding hands while jumping down from somewhere together
comparing hand sizes, then linking fingers together
