I'm pretty neutral about "enemies to lovers/friends" but "rivals to friends or lovers" or "rivals AND friends or lovers" on the other hand --

Imagine you're trying to become the best at some kind of sport. Bonus points if it's a solo sport. You might've dedicated your entire childhood to it and have few friends as a result. The only person who understands how important this is for you is your coach/trainer. And then there's this guy (gender neutral) who is basically the same. You have mutual respect for each other and motivate each other to go on. If they were to quit you'd feel devastated as they'd become a crucial part of your life. They are the only opponent you deem worthy and overcoming them is your life goal.

As you two get closer you start questioning whether it can affect your professional life, whether the line between your private life and your job can get blurry. When you two meet at the boxing ring will you be able to punch the body you once held? When you two meet at the chess tournament, will the thought of giving in cross your mind? If they found out that you lost on purpose they'd be furious but also flattered for a moment. You'd be for sure. You start wondering if your relationship is as innocent as you'd initially thought.
