you know i really promised myself i wouldn’t get too into this because miraculous ladybug is literally a children’s show but i keep seeing shit on twitter and i can’t help it. the way some people treat adrien as some kind of thing devoid of feelings or choice when he is a person with autonomy and emotions is so fucking weird. like some of you have no ability to accept the fact that marinette might be wrong about something and try to make excuse after excuse about why she HAS to keep secrets from him.

and like, i fully understand why she doesn’t tell adrien about his dad. i know she made a promise to gabriel, who was definitely using her vulnerability to his advantage, and that she’s probably scared of what would happen if the truth came out, but she is also very wrong for not allowing adrien the choice of whether he wants to know the truth. this is not her secret to keep. she does not get to decide what he should know about his own family. that choice is his and only his, not even his dead father’s. he should not still have the opportunity to control his son’s life from behind the grave.

and ppl keep saying oh it could cause chat blanc she can’t tell him, but her lying to him about it and him eventually finding out could also cause chat blanc. the reveal of his father being hawkmoth was sprung onto adrien in a moment of battle, but that wasn’t the root cause of chat blanc. it was revelation of his mother, and gabriel’s true intentions with the two miraculous and marinette’s warning that the wish will have a price if made. all of this was thrust upon him with no warning, and no time for him to process what was happening, and that could very well happen again if this information is sprung on him in a similar way.

there is nothing that suggests if marinette asked him if he wanted to know the truth, and warning him what knowing the truth would entail, would lead to chat blanc. the two situations are so different from each other that we cannot assume that the same events would occur. but i can’t imagine that when adrien eventually finds out marinette was lying to him all this time about the truth, it will lead to anything good either. especially if it’s someone who isn’t marinette who tells him.

the truth can hurt, and will hurt no matter what, but the best way to prevent anything bad from happening, is to allow him to choose if he wants to know the truth. and he might not! and that’s okay, too, but it would be his decision and that’s what this all comes down to. because there may not be any good outcome to this situation, but the best outcome is the one where adrien is given the choice to decide if he wants to know or not.

and marinette being wrong for keeping that secret does not make her a bad person. she has a lot of empathy and knows that the truth will hurt adrien. she’s doing what she thinks is in his best interest, but it will only hurt her relationship with him and possibly with her friends down the line if she continues to withhold it. what she thinks might be for the best, may not always be what actually is. it is not her burden alone to bear, and it’s not up to her to decide what is best for adrien. he is a person, and has the ability to make that decision for himself if he so chooses.

i think my biggest gripe with the comparison between zuko and john smith and zutara as a whole to pocahontas is that john smith was an active colonizer. he was a grown man who chose and was proud of what he was doing. he didnt even believe the act of colonization was wrong. yes, he tried to end the violence in the movie, but he still lived with the belief that his people deserved to and were entitled to co exist on that land with the indigenous people.

zuko was an active participant in dismantling a hundred years of colonialism and colonization and genuinely wanted to fix the problems that his ancestors had left for him. it wasn’t easy and he wasn’t a perfect leader, but he was genuinely trying to make decisions that would be for the better of all the people, not just himself or his people. where john smith thought that indigenous ppl needed the white people’s help to become “more civilized” because he viewed them as inferior, zuko sought to give those that the fire nation had hurt their autonomy back.

that’s not to say that it isn’t a valid reason to dislike zutara, and if the idea makes you uncomfortable that’s fine and i respect it. i realize that the ship doesn’t appeal to everyone and that’s okay, but i just hate the comparisons because john smith was genuinely just an awful person who never should’ve been glorified in a disney movie.

i also think it’s worth noting that we ALL know what yall mean when you say azula and mai’s actresses are “too soft” or “too fluffy” or “not sharp enough” for the characters or say they fucked up casting and then fan cast a skinny asian girl. we ALL know know what you’re doing.

initial atla live action thoughts after finishing it: i think the animated version is still better. it wasn’t bad tho and i think the actors did a great job with their characters. i didnt love all the changes they made bc some of them were pretty major (if yall want my opinions on that i’ll make another post) and i’m not sure how that will change things in seasons to come. i’m not sold on the color grading either but that seems to be an issue with a lot of media these days. it makes it feel very dull. i do think it would’ve benefitted from keeping the target audience the same as the animated series (for kids) instead of trying to make it more game of thrones-esque, but i think it was a solid foundation at the least, and i’m curious to see where they take it in the future.

like okay, there are a lot of valid reasons why you may not personally ship zutara, and there are criticisms that you can make of the ship, i won’t try to argue with you, but it’s so frustrating that in the god given year of 2024, we are still having to explain why saying “the only reason girls ship zutara is because they’re projecting onto katara bc they want to be with zuko” is misogynistic.

if your criticisms of something is rooted in making women feel bad for liking something or implying women only like someone/thing bc they’re attracted to that character/person and are incapable of liking the story or development, you are just being misogynistic. that is misogynistic rhetoric, and it’s been used to shame girls and women for liking things, in fandom spaces and in general, for decades. it’s a criticism you never see leveled at men.

if you don’t like the ship, that’s fine, but stop echoing this idea that girls only like it bc they wanna be with zuko and are trying to live out some weird fantasy vicariously through katara. let it fucking die already.

People are gonna hate me for saying this, but I feel like Henren needs a divorce arc. Cheating isn’t something that should be forgiven but since the show had Karen forgive Hen (way too quickly imo) I feel like the pain is probably still there and maybe Karen needs to allow herself to be pissed off and ask Hen for a divorce and see other people and learn how to be divorced co parents together just long enough that they come back together and Hen for sure will never take her for granted again.

*FTR I love Hen. This is not me shitting on Hen. I just think it was just a shitty storyline to begin with, but they wrote it, they can’t pretend like it never happened and Karen can only be gracious for so long.
