Here is the thing: I never wanted to leave home. I played D&D and I read comic books and I was a little weird. I was 16. I wasn't good with girls, but, like, who was? I was weird, and so were a lot of other people. Perhaps most importantly is this--whatever happened in the crack years, whatever socio-economic indicators I was on the wrong side of, I felt loved by my parents, my family, my community, and (to be archaic) by my race. And I didn't really feel "different" than other black people. And so when people talk about "black nerds" I have no idea what they mean.

This is my particular experience. Talk to some other black person and you will get another. What I am trying to convey is that what you see here (and what I hope you like here) going from Hobbes to Voyager to Français to CTE to drones is a byproduct of my community (because this is how we talk) and the music I loved as a child. Hip-hop says "All Your Sonics Are Belonging to Us." And all your knowledge too.

There's always a long moment of silence after you finish playing. How does that feel onstage?

LS: Yes, it's a lovely moment. I don't like it when the audience starts in too quickly on their applause, much as I appreciate the sentiment of their response. But although it is very lovely, on a more prosaic note I have to reveal that that moment is actually pretty standard in the improv scene.** I think it's in many ways simply a consequence of the unknowingness of improv. The audience doesn't actually know if the piece is finished or not, so they wait.** (I joke about the 'improviser's slump' - you always know for sure that an improviser has finished when they drop their erect performing posture and sag a little into themselves.)

Is there anything about San Francisco that bums you out? Right now the art scene is crushingly bad. There are so many great painters out here and nobody can sell anything. Since the economic meltdown, nobody wants to buy anything. I trim weed for a living in Oakland. So I see all these beautiful old-ass houses that are just boarded up. It’s kind of crazy. Everything’s shutting down. Wait. You weed gardens? I trim weed and I do carpentry. The weed job is kind of new but I really like marijuana, so it turned out nicely. Oh. That weed. Yeah. I literally mean pot—cutting it down to a smokeable chunk. Marijuana’s pretty much legal. It’s not too hard to get a doctor here to say your insomnia would be helped by marijuana. I totally imagined you outside in the middle of summer furiously hacking at a never-ending field of crabgrass and dandelions. Out in the woods with a machete with sandals on? No. I sit on a couch. It’s not a bad job. I was too hung over to work the other day and I was laughing because all it requires me to do is sit on a leather couch and cut marijuana and watch horror movies all day, and I couldn’t even do that. That was a pretty blistering hangover.

[...]Less than a decade later (under the spell of psychedelics or other drugs, electronics, Indian and African music) Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, "1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)"/"Moon, Turn The Tides… Gently, Gently Away" by Jimi Hendrix, Terry Riley's Rainbow In Curved Air, Sly and the Family Stone's "Sex Machine", The Temptations' "Run Away Child, Running Wild", La Monte Young's "Sunday Morning Blues", Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" and John and Yoko's "Revolution No.9" all predicated organically multiplying, fractal soundfields of music in their different ways, rather than music as evolving sculpture, the closed and preset cellular structure of verse, chorus and bridge.

Again, recording technology played a significant role in the evolution of this open form music. "Now there's no 'take one' etc," Teo Macero told Ian Carr about the Miles Davis sessions of the late 60s. "The recording machine doesn't stop at the sessions, they never stop, except only to make the play back. As soon as he gets in there, we start the machines rolling." As Carr additionally pointed out: "In his recordings from now on, Miles wouldn't start with the idea of set pieces; instead he would simply explore some fragmentary elements and edit them into a cohesive piece of music afterwards."

In Kingston, Jamaica, sound engineer King Tubby, the proprietor of Tubby's Home Town Hi-Fi sound system, was following the same route at roughly the same time to very different ends. "The dance lasted for hours," wrote Steve Barrow in his sleevenotes to King Tubby’s Special 1973-1976 (Trojan), "with those four Treasure Isle dubplates as the only music, dubbed up live and differently ever time and with U Roy, the High Priest, toasting new lyrics for every version.[...]

What does Arca mean, because to your friends you're known as Alejandro? I have a very healthy dose of scepticism towards what identity is and what personas are, maybe because of my life journey. Identity is something so malleable. I wouldn't say one name is more real than the other but at the same time, in a contradictory way, I could say Alejandro is more personal and Arca is less so… It's more about my emotions rather than my experience. I like to think that it comes from a wilder place, where I allow myself to go emotionally on stage. When I'm making music I'm not really thinking about my name. I'm not one or the other. Arca means 'box' or 'wooden' in very old Spanish. It's a ceremonial container where you store jewellery or valuables, an empty space that can become pregnant with whatever music or meaning I give to it. It was important to me that it wasn't a word that already existed but rather something hollow that I could create.
