recently got into watching Patlabor—these idiots break their giant robots so often and I love them for it.

Why is whether people still do Patlabor cosplay an important security question?

Because an important aspect of security is wearing something that immediately marks you as security. At a convention with cosplay, the problem with this is that there’s a Lot of cosplay that at quick glance looks like a security uniform… or rather, in the context of a cosplay-dense environment, a security uniform looks like a costume. I was complemented on my costume multiple times while working such events.

Here’s some examples of the types of uniforms used by security companies:

Notice how a lot of those look a lot like various cosplay outfits?

After carefully considering what people cosplay as to try to identify a security uniform that wouldn’t read as a costume in a cosplay context, I concluded that a safety neon vest type uniform would work…

…unless people are still doing Patlabor cosplay, since the Patlabor characters are supposed to be fairly realistic urban police and wear safety neon vest type uniforms and the cosplay looks like this.
