Magical Boy Love Corner AU! Maxim babysitting Emi again!

"Bye bye, Emi, I'll be back in a few hours. Be good for Maxim, okay?" VR-LA said gently, crouching down to be at Emi's level. "I heard he even got a gift for you, so don't make him regret it, okay?"

Emi nodded, her expression unwavering in its mild grumpiness. "Bye..." She muttered.

VR-LA turned his gaze towards Maxim as he stood up. "Thank you again. I'll see you soon."

"See you soon." Maxim replied.

As soon as VR-LA was out of earshot, Emi turned her head towards Maxim, looking up at him. "Is the gift a bribe because you're going to become my new dad?"

Maxim tried not to look startled at that statement.

"Because MR-SN is cooler."

"According to MR-SN, you said the opposite last week." Maxim said, chuckling a bit. "No, I'm not going to be your new dad, even if I'm dating your dad. Something like that wouldn't happen without your say."

"...okay." Emi mumbled. "Can I have my gift then?"

"After dinner." Maxim answered, ushering her back into the house. "We have to decide what to order."

"Pizza?" Emi requested, immediately jumping onto that instead.

"That works."

Emi stared at the plushie she had pulled out of the box, a classic looking teddy bear, just with a little blue scarf tied around its neck. She squished it, and then squished it again. Maxim couldn't tell if she liked it. At least he couldn't until she hugged it.

"...thank you." She said, putting its head under her chin.

"Are you going to name it?" Maxim asked.

"...hm." Emi hummed. "I dunno. Maybe. It's kinda like Dad."

"It is, isn't it?"

"Maybe I could name it after him!" Emi kicked her legs a bit under the table.

"I'm sure he'd be very happy if you did." Or more likely, somewhat embarrassed.

Emi hummed in thought. "...I don't have any ideas."

"Maybe you will soon." Maxim said, standing up. Now, it was time for the final step in getting the kid to accept him dating VR-LA. "How about an ice cream sandwich, hm?"

"Really?!" Emi jumped up, still holding the teddy, tucking it under her arm as she followed Maxim to the kitchen.

PLEASE for the love of the universe read anti-colonial science fiction and fantasy written from marginalized perspectives. Y’all (you know who you are) are killing me. To see people praise books about empire written exclusively by white women and then turn around and say you don’t know who Octavia Butler is or that you haven’t read any NK Jemisin or that Babel was too heavy-handed just kills me! I’m not saying you HAVE to enjoy specific books but there is such an obvious pattern here
