Fanfolks today need to remember how important The Premise was.

Y'all have heard of The Premise, right?

See, historically there have always been people who saw an extra layer of gayness on certain pairs of fictional people (you just thought of several), and people Back Then even wrote their own fanfic (or as they were called at the time, "pastiches"), but the first widespread queer fanwork to really define the fanfiction genre was KIRK AND SPOCK. Kirk/Spock. K/S. The very first slashfics.

Why this work was vastly, overwhelmingly written by straight women is a discussion for another time, but it was, so that's the main perspective I'm gonna consider here.

How do you - a statistically middle-class, 30+, stay-at-home wife and mother - how do you write slashfic ao3-style in the 1960's before the internet?

Carefully.

Through letters with friends, phone calls, pen pals, and sometimes - sometimes - clandestine meetings of small groups. Whole novels were written communally, round-robin style, by sending typed or handwritten additions chapter by chapter to each other. These were all underground, some deep underground; even the early Trekkie fanzines of the time wouldn't touch them.

And keep in mind, few of these stories were explicitly even sexual! But they were all about a very, very close relationship between two men. In the 1960's.

Guess how cool everyone else was about this.

Actually, for their part, Gene Rodenberry and the other writers were fine with it, saying that they had deliberately written the characters to be two halves of a whole, and if you wanna read it that way, yeah sure, go right ahead. Shatner and Nimoy took it all in good humor, and seemingly still do, each guy basically gesturing to the other and chuckling "I mean, who wouldn't?"

(CORRECTION: At least, they did until Nimoy passed away in 2015. Thanks @richie-is-rich!)

But elsewhere there was vicious backlash against The Premise, and not just within the fandom. This was still at a time in the US and UK when various "sodomy" and "decency" laws made no distinction between homosexual sex acts and just, like, directly lighting another man's cigarette with your cigarette in public. (That, sadly, is not a fucking joke.)

It was probably the closest some suburban cishet women came to understanding the pain of being in the closet. They had to protect this secret from their friends and family at all cost. There were cases of divorces where women lost custody of their children because their writing had come to light.

Can you imagine having such a burning desire to write for your OTP that you were willing to lose everything over it? Even if you were never caught, you still had to be willing to wait weeks, months, to receive a letter in the mail that you had to carefully intercept, read in secret, and then add your own chapter t, also in secret, and then send off, perhaps never to be seen again.

These people were goddamn heroes, and they laid the foundation for the world we live in today. A world where we can read, write, comment on, or share - in a matter of seconds! - literature about two background characters from two different franchises enjoying a really specific kink involving vacuums or something. And that's objectively amazing.

Raise a toast to our fanfiction elders, who simped in the darkness so we could simp in the light of day.

Did you know you can play mp3s with Winamp 5.6x, a very old program that plays songs perfectly fine from your PC, where your songs should be? Are you talking about #baby squad? Yeah, I used that becuase it's associated with people who get on Sai's ass for dumb stuff, many people use it. I'm not using that hashtag as an insult like a little joke told at the end of my post, but the shoe does seem to fit if you have to go out of your way to misrepresent things to make a point and call me simp for... agreeing with Sai's takes on stuff? Correcting misinformation? Messing around with Pink King's sycophants? I don't think you know what a simp is. Take a look at what I say about Ant, am I a simp for him too? What about CrimsonEnder? These are there very different content creators whose opinions I respect even if I don't always agree with them and I'm supportive of them in very similar ways. Yep, that's real simp behavior.

I say "to the best of my knowledge" specifically because I know I could be wrong, my memory is fallible. Why are you upset that I'm qualifying my statement to acknowledge this? You seem to think it means the exact opposite - that I'm stating a firm, undelayable fact - I'm not sure how you could misinterpret this so badly. This is one of the clearest examples I've ever seen of someone with no reading comprehension.

"Sigh," I don't tend to interact with you because you're worthless and your opinions are worthless to anyone with the faintest capacity to think for themselves. Your art is genuinely so fun, alive, palatable, I don't know how to describe it, but I enjoy it immensely and it's so distinct. I'm not an artist myself, so I'm failing at articulating what it is that I like so much about your style, but I know it's amazing. You'll have thumbnails for videos or streams about a topic I really don't have interest in but the art in the thumbnail just draws me in, and then I'm usually treated to something fun and new or an interesting discussion - it's a win-win, or something like that. My point is, even if your art is cartoony, that's not a negative, I'm always excited to see what you'll create next!

Dude, I think you're big recruited into a heist! If there's a spot open, I recommend being the tech guy who stays back in the surveillance van and hacks the security grid but then the team gets caught so you have to go in yourself and demonstrate your inner badassary to rescue the team. The sweet thing about this gig is you get say "We're in!" when you hack the grid and "Am I late to the party?" when you rescue the team - classic action movie lines.

Hermitcraft is one of the few Minecraft Youtuber communities that doesn't have controversy going on or at least not much. They're all also mostly in their 30's and 40's, so they didn't grow up with the idea of being Youtubers as a career and don't carefully strategizing how to explore a child audience. While obviously many of the hermits will have kids watching their stuff, it seems like most of the fans are adults. I'd put them into the same category of Youtuber as Sai - mostly an adult fanbase and Youbube pretty much fell into their laps.

Mumbo is also a sweetheart and my spirit animal. We share a blood type: redstone!

There was a civil war on Hermitcraft (it was a prank war) and there were two sides, G-team and team star. Mumbo just says “bananas” during his verse because he is actually a mole for G-team but was found out when team Star attacked the G-team’s base. Mumbo kept spamming “BANANAS” in the chat to alert G-team that they were under attack and he was kicked out of team Star. It’s been like five years since I watched any of this so I’m not entirely sure how accurate it is (sorry).
