4 seconds in and there’s already so much symbolism and hidden meaning in this song, both in the lyrics and the accompanying music video. Its very easy to draw parallels between this song and the current issues in our society. Honestly, i think its pretty ironic, considering its artists just like miss perry who create/contribute to the sheep-like behaviour of society. So, why the need for the futurism throughout the video when this is our reality right now??!! Tbh I'm a lil confused about the 50s references tho, idk maybe its trying to illustrate that by going forward we’re only going back. I mean, society’s always had a need to classify people into bubbles - e.g. in the 50s world, where women were oppressed into the roles of housewives, and also in our world today, where society follows the trends and social norms as set by high profile fame, especially those of the music industry. I guess people don’t realise its just another form of oppression. Both of these situations are carefully articulated within the music video for “Chained To The Rhythm”
Her lyrics hav been so delicately crafted. Eg:.
“dance dance dance to the distortions”
“we, yeah, we think we’re free”
“so comfortable we’re living in a bubble”
Kind of speak for themselves really
It irks me a little how happy and mundane everyone seems in the video although its message is so harsh and totally real - like come on people why cant u see ur all living like sheep ??? I mean its almost too subtle, even though its also blatantly obvious. Sly move Katy.
the part where the girls are dancing in synch with their massive phones or whatever, indicating how we feel the need to document every part of our lives, and by doing so actually tend to miss a lot of other cool shit that happens every day. On the contrary, we also conveniently miss a lot of bad shit that happens every day, supposedly giving an excuse to just ignore it and continue living in bliss. I guess this relates back to the very fitting name of the theme park: “Oblivia”
on the coaster, the seats on the left hav a blue heart (where all the men sit) and the seats on the right hav a pink heart (where all the women sit) - possibly referring to current issues surrounding same sex marriage, homosexuality and the accompanying discrimination and societal expectations. But also, how when they reach the end of the ride, Simon’s “score” is near 10,000 whereas Rose’s hasn't even reached 20, even tho they both completed the exact same ride. Perhaps this is highlighting the also relevant issue of gender discrimination, and maybe even the wage gap between men and women, and how men tend to earn more for doing the same job a woman does just as well.
In terms of the artistry, woah its good. I’m INStantly captivated by Katy’s bubblegum pink hair and pastel eyeshadow. The vivid and dreamlike scenes are so creative and i really wanna know who directed/produced the vid bc i want MORE!!!! the theme park setting is so cool, i love the floating house ride (”The Great American Dream Drop” wow what a reference; one i won't go into much detail about bc tbh i think that whole thing is a SHAM), and the giant rollercoasters (although I'm sure OSH would be all over the fact that YOU’RE LITERALLY NOT EVEN ATTACHED TO THE TRACKS HALF THE TIME). her outfits are a work of art - she looks like a futuristic QUEEN and dang her boobs look so good in that white ensemble YAS GURL. Also the shooesss omg, so nice and also a very smart business move considering she’s just released her own line of crazy futuristic footwear...
oh and then at the end she sees this snoopy rapper Rastafarian rapper dude warp out of TV, who is totally unlike all the other sheep, who triggers her realisation that its ok to be different and that if u rap, ur probably more likely to change the world.
I think its real moving that someone such as Katy Perry has (cryptically) spoken up about the filthy behaviour of society. Personally, theres more to it than just speaking up, but its a great start. But i’d say definitely prepare urself for the “demise” of the Katy Perry we’ve all come to know & love (or hate, if you're that way inclined) , where she takes up smoking pot, rebelling against the society she helped create, and devoting her time learning to rap so her next album can actually help RESHAPE and REINSPIRE the music industry and everyone it influences. You can tell by her terrified facial expression in the final frame, that theres definitely something whack coming our way. Its like one of those Wasjig puzzles, & now we all hav to piece together what she was staring at that made her look so afraid !!!  hav fun kids & dont do psychadelics on rollercoasters

honey bones. what a unique concept. the multiple exposures used in the video are captivating, creating a kaleidoscopic fantasy before my eyes. I'm getting some hippy yet tribal vibes from the opening rhythm. however, the music feels kinda silky, and then sticky - i guess exactly what i imagine honey bones would probably feel like. its beautiful, his voice is so soft, the kind of voice u would want to listen to as you fall asleep each night whilst dreaming of yellow summery acid trips and the taste of manuka. visionary. lemony. dope.

POLLY NOR!!!! i was so excited when i saw the cover art for this bc i did a comparative study on Nor’s art when i was in high school and it spoke to me 4 real. *insert feminist statements*. anyway, no idea who Chelou is, never heard of them before until just now actually, but i listened to the music along side the creative direction of polly now and, although bizarre, i feel the illustrations compliment the music quite nicely.
the opening line “how do you get out of bed in the morning” is so relevant to the graphics, and humanity as a whole really. i mean, basically, what i take from this is, we all have a dark side that isn't so easily suppressible. but we must face those demons, even though they are within ourselves and difficult to acknowledge/face. the title, “halfway to nowhere”, coupled with the devil-womans journey through a graphic, growing, detailed jungle, creates a nice nihilistic buzz. i really empathise w devil-woman, possibly because i see myself within her. wow, deep.
anyway... well done, Chelou, i applaud ur meaningful, relatable yet somewhat disturbing artistic fodder
ps. according to “curtis mills” in the YT comments, “chelou” means weird in french. how fitting, dont u agree ??

fuck me up fam this is so haunting. its the blue, the blur, the backwards walking, & the black lips. the strobe lighting and the crowds of people makes me feel a lil claustrophobic. - hahah tbh if i was at that festival and this crazy hyped screaming chick comes crashing backwards into me followed by a camera guy i’d b a like wtf u doin but this just looks so cool i dont even care. oh man i haven't even started on the vocals, like whatever effect they hav used is working, it sound so spooky and eerie but it works so well with the screamed nature of it. honestly she must be on acid or something but i would hope for nothing less, the vibes are sick, she looks like she's sick, its all just really fucking sick. 10/10 crystal castles u hav my heart

legendary. if only i could do my eyeshadow that good. oh and that matching mint suit !!! did anyone else notice that one of his pupils is always wider than that other? bowie: a man of many talents and quirks. tbh, apart from this song being by bowie, and i love and appreciate bowie, i dont really like it. feels kinda dull and repetitive and the music vid is pretty boring (like yes, we already know david bowie is a beautiful human who defies all social constructs)- plus i dont really understand what any of it has to do with mars or its current or potential life forms ?? not his best song imo
(rip to a true icon #bowieforever)

my thoughts pretty much the entire time watching this: wtf
however, (when i wasn't too distracted by the creepy pink ram visuals with gross tongues and globs of audial-synchronising floating goo) i thought the beats were funky and variant and technically futuristic which was a great deal of fun to listen to !

wow this is memorable and sad and beautiful and hopeful and nostalgic all at once !! complete emotion + sensory overload - dear friends, family and tumblr users alike: i am tripping the fuck out. but in the dreamiest way possible. the flickering photographs are so perfectly aligned with the beat, it truly makes my body tingle. i feel like i know so much about anonymous camera wielder just by experiencing their travels in this jerky collection of snippets. it creates the urge to travel and explore and experience new people places and their cultures. i wonder if something like this is what i’ll see the moment i die

crikey!! i really have no clue why i haven't reviewed this yet - its literally my fave song of all time. firstly, the opening sequence transports me to 70s arcade land with a medieval twist and then BAM a whole new galaxy as Grimes and her crew get funky on a flying car and then again in an empty subway. i AM in LOVE. straight up girl gang goals: fierce, fashionable, unforgettable. i admire these art angels so much. OK the best part tho - the underground blood rave holy heck do i wanna lose myself in there with a shitton of ecstasy. the cute lil animations that pop up post production enhance the fantasy and gamegamegame illusion that is topped off with “you died” at the end like in a video game, equally corresponding with the morbid title “kill v main” TOO FUCKIN GOOD ALRIGHT. nothing gets better than this. the bees knees. watch or die.

imo the music video for this is incredible gross haha, but the vocals are so smooth and i love how the song accurately reflects the title, evoking a gooey feeling - which, coupled with the ickiness of its accompanying music video, creates a legit peanut butter vibe
