i wanna put this here for some Writer's Commentary on the april fools event to clarify some things about it -

so this is event is Entirely Noncanon. red/leaf are canonically dead and gone. their souls were erased from the game to make room for cody's. when we return to canon monocrome, the idea that red/leaf were actually secretly alive and watching all along will be rejected if it's brought up. this whole event is more of a "what-if" scenario. "how would red/leaf be there, if they could still exist?" the computer was just a vehicle to answer that theoretical question, if that was the direction i wanted to take with their characters in canon.

but it's not something i want to be canon, because i feel like part of the appeal of monochrome's story is that red/leaf haunt the narrative. they never Got to tell their side of the story, we almost Never see any dialogue from them, we only ever hear about them from cody's own biased perspective. there's a part of me that worries that aspect of the narrative will be damaged with this event and that what red/leaf say during the event will influence future asks people send to cody about them, but the other half just decided to do it anyway because it's a fun and interesting concept worth exploring.

i did still want to preserve some aspect of red/leaf being Gone From Existence though. we still don't get to see them in person. their answers are short and vague. they don't explain or justify themselves to the audience. this isn't the same red/leaf that tried to dissuade cody all those years ago. what little good faith they were willing to give to players has been completely lost now.

but that's also why i don't believe red/leaf would randomly decide to talk to the players out of nowhere like this if they were canonically "alive". i do believe that they would continue to silently watch cody until cody and their players found them and directly confronted them first. this event is meant to be more like a fun thought experiment of, "if red/leaf did decide to talk to the players on their own, what would they say to each other?" but there's no real answer for why they decided to speak to their players right now. just like there's no canon explanation for why outsiders can visit cody's game in non-canon interactions. i wish i hadn't fumbled that, i wish i could have given a more plausible reason for why red/leaf are talking to you (and maybe i will try again in the future) but for now it's all just silly noncanon stuff and i hope people don't think about it too hard </3
