CHAPTER TEN
DEREK
The sun had started to come up, yet I haven’t slept a bit. I’d spent the whole night awake watching Vanessa drift in and out of consciousness, eyelashes fluttering and body twitching every so often. Sometimes she would even hum little melodies- and I didn’t want to miss a second of it.
I ran my fingers through her messy mane of wavy dark hair, watching as the sunlight hit it making it flash a deep reddish color, and making her necklace reflect shimmering bits of purple light into my wooden floors. My thumb had moved to start rubbing the outline of her cheekbone when she started to stir under me. Slowly, Vanessa’s eyelids fluttered open, revealing those gorgeous amber iris’.
“What’re you doing?” She asked, smile wide across her face.
“Admiring the view,” I responded starting to move my hand away, but she grabbed it and placed it back on her head.
“Well don’t stop on account of me.”
Vanessa was practically gleaming in the sunlight, curves outlined under the thin sheets she was under. I inched myself closer to her, taking her into a light embrace under my arm. She hummed, weaving her legs with mine.
“What changed?”
Her voice caught me off guard, seeing as how I’d dazed off into admiring her features. I looked down and was met with her eyes.
“Huh?”
“You know what I mean,” She said rolling her eyes, but I just shrugged. “Well the first time we were… ya’ know… together- you straight up said that it could never happen again. Then it did, but you couldn’t even look at me after and made me leave. Now this… You’re all kinds of confusing, Derek Hale.”
I sighed, twirling a piece of her hair around my finger. “This bond is a rare thing,” I said, struggling to find the right things to say without making this look like a power hungry scheme. “We can make the pack stronger together- so why fight it?”
Vanessa hummed in agreement, starting to shift herself upwards and out of my grasp. “So this is all just a power thing for you, huh?” She said, drawing little designs in the fabric of my comforter. I reached out to her and began to protest, but she held up her hands, brushing mine away. “No Derek, I get it- I do. Don’t worry, I’d probably do the same thing if I were you,”
I shook my head, taking her arm lightly and pulling her back into my arms. “That’s not what I meant- That’s just how I’m going to explain this to Peter because god know’s he’ll have something to say about it.” I said, trying to calm her nerves that I could almost feel crawling under her skin, but it didn’t work.
I’m not sure how her relationship was with Isaac, but I’m almost positive it was transparently perfect from the very beginning. They probably both knew what the other wanted and what they were thinking at all times, and I could tell that this wasn’t the case with me. She was trying so hard to pry into my mind and get a clear look inside but kept hitting wall after wall.
“Listen, I’m not great with my emotions- but that’s no secret.” I started to explain. “I’m not an open book and I certainly haven’t made this easy on you. Just know… know I’m not ignoring this. Whatever we have, I feel it too even if I don’t know what to do with those feelings. All I want to do is see where this takes us, alright?” She nodded, nerves visibly easing a bit. I smirked, planting a kiss on her head before gently sliding her out of my arms. “May want to check your phone, it’s been vibrating on the floor out there.” I said pointing to the door, earning a groan from her. She started to get up, but I gently pushed her back down and stepped out of the bed, sliding some sweats on. “I’ll get it, you stay here- you don’t have clothes and I can hear Peter walking around out there.”
I’d almost walked out the door but Vanessa leaned across the bed, grabbing my arm to turn me around. I thought maybe she had another request of something to get from the loft but as soon as our eyes met she attacked me with a heated kiss. One of her hands was resting carelessly on my waist, one of mine sliding across her cheek, trying to help my lips take in as much of her as possible.
Then she pulled away, slumping back onto the bed.
“Hurry back,” She hummed, waving me off. I grinned, shaking my head and heading out into the loft where as predicted, Peter was standing right in the center of.
“Had a little sleepover last night, did you Der?”
I rolled my eyes, trying to avoid eye contact on my way to the kitchen. “I took your advice in embracing the bond- and damn did it feel good.” I said, running to pick up Vanessa’s clothes from last night, grabbing her phone that rested near her discarded shirt. A few missed messages from her dad and Stiles- hopefully nothing life threateningly urgent.
“You’re the one that told me not to fight the bond, so I don’t know what you’re being so passive-aggressive about.”
“Tsk tsk Derek, I think you misinterpreted my advice.” Peter wagged his finger at me, taking a few steps closer. “I told you to use the bond for the packs power. I didn’t tell you to go catching feelings for a goddamn Stilinski.”
“I don’t think the bond is a pick-and-choose kind of thing.”
“And now we’ll never know…”
“Whatever, Peter-” I said, walking past my uncle and headed back to the bedroom, but he stopped me, turning me around before I could get out of his reach.
“Dear nephew, you’ve got a running streak of picking the most sociopathic women to fall for- or don’t you remember the last one in Peru? What was her name? Alina… Annie…. Amb-”
My vision flashed red as he started to run names. “That was different, and I handled the problem.” I growled, tearing myself from Peter’s grasp.
“Then why is she still calling you?” My legs froze, entire body paralyzed in its movements. “You think I don’t see all those missed calls you try to avoid? One day your past will catch up with you Derek- one day it won’t be a phone call, but a knock at the door.”
I didn’t even bother to turn around or threaten him because I knew he was right. I can’t hide from what I’ve done because it’s going to come back to me sooner or later. Even then, I’d really prefer later.
VANESSA
When Derek came back into the room I felt that something was off.
“What took you so long?” I asked, using my smoothest, seductive voice but he completely ignored it.
“Your dad and Stiles have been calling,” He muttered in response, tossing my clothes and phone onto the foot of the bed. “A lot.”
Derek was standing on the other side of the bed, his hands seeming to tremble as he pulled his shirt back on. Something’s definitely wrong, just by watching him I can tell. I leaned across the bed, sliding my fingers nimbly up his arm.
“What’s wrong, Sourwolf?” I inquired teasing him, but that just seemed to push him further away.
“Don’t call me that,” He whined, running his hands through his hair. I noticed that he won’t look me in the eye when he’s talking to me- so I decided to take a more serious approach.
“Okay, really- what’s wrong? Did Peter say something douchey about me spending the night?” I was now up on my knees, almost eye level with him standing on the ground. He was looking down at his phone, staring at the home screen. “Derek, hey-” I tilted his head upwards so he couldn’t avoid looking me in the eye this time, but when he did it felt like a piece of my heart broke. Those normally bright green eyes, always sparkling even when he’s being a broody asshole seemed to be dark and cold.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” He growled before tucking one of his hands under my thigh, tossing me back onto the bed as he slid between my legs. His lips attached and sucked on the junction between my neck and shoulder, making my eyes roll back and nails dig into his skin.
“Derek,” I groaned, half encouraging him but also trying to simultaneously push him off even though he’s much bigger and stronger than me- plus those lips are magic. “C’mon, get off.”
Giving him one more hard push, he flung himself off of me, eyebrows furrowed. “What- did I do something wrong?”
“No no,” I said shaking my head, reaching for my shirt and pulling it on. “But you can’t just use sex as an excuse not to talk about your problems.” Sliding off the bed, I continued to get dressed, checking the messages on my phone from Stiles and my dad.
“Why would I talk to you about my problems?” Derek snapped at me, but I just looked up at him and scoffed, rolling my eyes then looking back down at my phone. He groaned in defeat, sliding off the bed next to me, standing behind me and sliding his arms around my waist. A pathetic yet surprisingly effective way for him to gain my sympathy. “He just brought something up about my past and it put me in a bad mood, okay? Not a big deal.” He pressed his lips back to my neck, peppering light kisses along my exposed skin.
I hummed an ‘mmhmm’ to him, continuing to run through my messages.
Where are you? Call me. -Dad
Dude pops is gonna kick ur ass if you don’t get home -Stiles
Scott said ur with Derek? Wtf- CALL! -Stiles
You better not be with Derek Hale young lady or I’m going to change the locks before you can come home. -Dad.
I groaned, turning myself around in Derek’s arms. “As tempted as I am to stay, I really should get home before my dad gets homicidal.” Turning my head, I caught a quick glance of myself in the mirror and deep purple marks etched into my skin. “And I don’t suppose you have any concealer, do you?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Concealer?”
“Guess not…”
Derek gave me a ride back home after he’d helped me try and cover the hickies with baby powder which just made me look like I’d been doing cocaine and then got punched in the neck- several times. When I got inside, my dad was sitting on the couch with his head in his hands, Stiles sitting on the kitchen counter. Both of their eyes were fixed on me, making goosebumps come up on my skin.
Then the yelling.
“Derek Hale? Of all the people in this town you chose to hang out with a convicted murderer? You’re really must be trying to kill me, Vanessa!” My dad shouted, waving his hands around. Stiles still hadn’t said anything, I think he’s saving it until we’re alone. “You didn’t even call last night! You can’t just stay over at a twenty-three year old man’s house without giving me a good fucking reason, Vin!”
“He was helping me with some combat skills when I got tired and fell asleep…” I muttered, anger boiling in me as I felt my eyes start to glow yellow.
“Combat skills? Is that what you call it?” He said, brushing my hair back behind my shoulders revealing the not-too-greatly covered hickies on my neck and shoulder. “You’re hardly eighteen, you can’t go sleeping around with adult men!”
“Is that really what you think of me- that I just sleep around?” I shouted back, voice echoing in the small living room. “Did you think that maybe I actually know Derek? That maybe I like him?” My last words came out with a deep growl, eyes now glowing their bright golden color. My father looked scared- terrified even. He’s never once expressed anything like that about me being a werewolf and seeing the way his features shifted when mine did… I never thought I would have to see that. “I’m sorry dad, I didn’t-” I said, frantically trying to apologize- but when I took a step forward, he and Stiles both took little ones back away from me- my heart broke. “I don’t… I’m…” Both of their hearts were racing so fast that even I could hear it.
Instead of confronting the issue head on, I bolted up the stairs with my head down, locking myself in my bedroom. I could hear my dad calling after me as I ran, but I knew it was out of pity. He was scared- Stiles was scared- of me. What’s happening?
I slid down against the door, taking my necklace between my fingers and twirling it. Sometimes I think that life would be so much easier if my mom were still here. Maybe if one thing in the timeline had shifted, everything bad wouldn’t have happened and my family would be living a normal human life. Before I knew it I could feel hot tears streaming down my cheeks, and I was letting out quiet sobs into my hands.
Once I’d calmed myself down I pulled out my phone, scrolling through the contacts until I found the one I was looking for then pressed the dial button. The line rang for a few seconds before a familiar voice picked up on the other end.
“Hey, it’s me… Can you get over here right now? Come up to my window from the roof. I need someone to talk to.”
It wasn’t even a half hour later that I heard the faint humming of a motorbike pulling into the driveway. I was sitting outside my window out in the baking sunlight that northern California gets in mid April- it’s just past noon now but I couldn’t bring myself to be inside that house.
“Hey.”
I turned my head and Scott was carefully stepping his way across the roof to me. I wiped a tear of my cheek, shooting him a smile.
“Hi,” I replied back, trying to steady my cracking voice. “Thanks for coming.”
“Of course I came,” He said, sitting down next to me. “Did something happen with uh…” I could tell Scott was tip-toeing around Derek’s name, probably assuming he’s the reason for my tear stained cheeks. I shook my head.
“No no, it’s not him. Well I mean, sort of but not really- it’s all sorts of things and everything is piling on top of each other my mind just isn’t working my dad and Stiles are finally realizing I’m a monster we’re graduating in two months-”
“Whoa, whoa! Calm down and take a breath, you’re rambling.” Scott put his hand on mine, making a bit of warmth rush through me. “You’re not starting to get panic attacks again, are you?”
I looked down, completely aware of what he was referring to. When Stiles and I lost our mother, we would get these awful panic attacks- so awful to the point that I had to be brought to the ER one night because Stiles had caused himself to get a blood clot from all the hyperventilating and extreme anxiety. Every once in a while he or I will get one of those panic attacks when things get real bad- luckily that hasn’t happened yet.
“Fortunately, no-” I shook my head, looking down to try and hide the new tears forming. “I came home this morning and… Scott, everyone was just yelling at each other and you know my dad doesn’t have a filter when he’s angry- neither do I. The yelling just got so bad and… I started to shift and growled at them. You should have seen their faces. Oh god, they were terrified of me.”
I hadn’t noticed I’d started to sob again until Scott pulled me into a tight embrace against his chest, letting me let everything out into it.
“They’re not afraid of you, Vinny- they’re your family.”
“You didn’t see them. They think I’m a monster,” I said, taking a deep breath. “And maybe they’re right.”
Scott pulled me away from his chest, resting his hand on my cheek to hold my face level with his. “You are not a monster. You never will be a monster. Don’t ever think that because they second you do is the second you lose control.”
I know I should be listening to Scott. He knows what he’s talking about and he’s been dealing with this longer than I have. But I still can’t shake the look on their faces… It replays every time I close my eyes. Pulling myself away from Scott, I tucked my knees to my chest and rocked myself back.
“Why did this have to happen to us? I just want to be fucking normal- that’s all I want.”
Scott sighed, draping his arm around me. “I think you should talk to Derek about this.” He suggested, causing me to glance up at him eyebrows raised. “I know, I know- but he really helped me out when I thought these same things. Go to him as your alpha, not as… well, whatever you two are.”
I sucked in a breath, biting my bottom lip. “You know about that?”
He laughed a little. “Yeah, but that’s a lecture for another time. As long as you’re happy, Vin. You are happy, right? Derek’s not exactly the best of people and I don’t want him hurting you…”
I groaned, reaching up to twirl my necklace. “I hate that you- that the pack- that’s what you guys think of him. The Derek you know is different than the one I’ve gotten to see. I just… I wish you could see it too.”
“Hey,” Scott said. I tilted my head up to look at him and was met with a sympathetic smile. “I’m okay as long as he’s making you happy- my opinion on him is irrelevant.”
I managed a smile back. “I think I’m happy. He makes me happy, but he’s not exactly the easiest person to read. Then again, he could just see me as a little naive fling and I’d never know, but-”
“Rambling, Vanessa.” Scott reminded me. I took a deep breath.
“Point is, I have no idea what’s going on with Derek- but right now, I’m happy.”
“Good, that’s all I needed to hear. Am I good to leave now, because I’m supposed to pick Allison up in ten minutes- Date night.”
I smiled, nudging him a little. “You can go.”
Scott got up, dusting his jeans off from the dirty roof and started to make his way back down to his bike. I just stared off into the distance, watching as my neighborhood went upon their lives. He was almost gone when he stopped and cleared his throat. I turned my head, raising an eyebrow.
“Ally’s worried about you, Vin. She’s been trying to leave you alone because of the whole alpha thing but… talk to her, will you? I’m tired of hearing about it.” He laughed off his last few words, trying to mask the fact that he was obviously a little worried too. He’s right, though. I normally update Allison on life events the moment after they happen but now I’ve come to find we haven’t spoken in days. Not to mention Lydia is pretty much completely in the dark about all of this.
“I’ll call her tonight.” I said, trying to reassure him. He shot me another quick grin, climbing down the roof and driving his motorbike back down the street. Maybe he’s right- maybe I should talk to Derek about this. But then again, with all the other stuff going on between us it might not be appropriate. I groaned, starting to feel a headache form in my temple. Only one thing runs through my mind at a time like this- Coffee.
I climbed back through my window, throwing on a new pair of clothes and grabbed my bag. In order to pull this off without my dad or Stiles stopping me I would have to pretty much move out of this house at the speed of light. I slipped out of my room, gently shutting the door behind me before swiftly moving down the stairs and out of the house. The nearest coffee shop was about a ten minute walk from the house- I could really use the fresh air too.
Dalton’s Coffee Shop and Bakery- a social hotspot in Beacon Hills. Small town like this, we have one Starbucks in the heart of downtown so this is the place all the neighborhood kids go. In my opinion, the coffee is better here anyways- and cheaper.
I’d been sitting in one of the leather chairs for about a half hour, taking my sweet time finishing my latte. I almost managed to have coffee in peace without anything bad happening- almost. The shop door chimes always caught my attention, so naturally when they rang this time I looked up to see the new customer. I wasn’t prepared to see Isaac step through that door, eyes red and hollowed out, hair messier and skin paler than usual. Our eyes met for a second and my heart stopped- he looked like he’d seen a ghost. And as if things couldn’t have gotten worse, Erica and Boyd walked in right behind him.
Erica pursed her perfectly drawn red lips and crossed her arms. ‘Well if it isn’t Little Miss Heartbreaker herself,”
All I wanted to do was sink into the chair- the last thing I needed today was to get chewed out by Erica.
“Leave it alone,” Isaac mumbled under his breath, averting his eyes from me and joining a few other people in the order line. I watched them delicately, squirming a little under Erica’s never ending bitch stare. Boyd was trying to grab my attention with soft glances, trying to sympathetically apologize for the blonde who was always attached to him. Isaac… I don’t even want to know what he’s thinking.
I quickly grabbed my bag, stepping out of Dalton’s before anything could get worse than it already had. I turned the corner onto a busy street, not even walking a few yards before a hand grabbed me, pulling me into an alley. Of course, the perfectly manicured hand belonged to Erica. I forgot about the back door.
“Did you really think you could slip away so fast?” She hissed, trapping me in a cage of her arms against the wall. I felt anger starting to bubble inside the pit of my stomach.
“Seriously, just leave me alone.” I said, ducking under her arm but she grabbed my wrist before I could get too far. Her claws dug into my fragile skin, puncturing the surface.
“What’s the matter, Stilinski? Baby wolf not so ballsy now that she don’t have an actual beta to back her up?” Her words just made the anger in my stomach boil.
“I’m just trying to get home, can you please-”
“Oh, girl!” She hummed, running her thumb across the pathetically covered hickies that coated my neck. “Is someone on the rebound?”
“I’m not kidding, Erica- fuck off.” I growled.
“Or what?” She continued to taunt. “What’re you gonna do, Vanessa? It’s not like you’ve got any real power- the only thing you can do is cuss me out and even then your vocabulary is mediocre.” The anger started to bubble over the top. “Derek must be so disappointed that he added such a fucking runt to his pack-”
I felt my features starting to shift, eyes heating into their golden glow. My claws came out and before I even knew what I was doing, my fist was swinging in Erica’s direction, sending her flying into the wall opposite of us, denting the brick spot where she hit it. It seemed as though she slid down the wall in slow motion, finally coming to a fetal slump back on the ground.
Isaac and Boyd must have heard the crash of Erica’s body hitting the brick, because they came rushing out the back door. It didn’t take long for Erica to recollect herself and get back on her feet. This time it was her whose features were shifting, eyes glowing a cold blue.
“You’re fucking dead, Stilinski.”
Shit.
Isaac and I’s eyes met for a split second (needless to say he looked pretty in awe) before I took off full speed down the street. Fortunately for me, running in Erica’s glossy Louis Vuittons was no match for my sneakers. It wasn’t long before the clicking of her heels was in the distance and I finally considered myself to be safe from her deadly grasp. But something tells me at school tomorrow I won’t have the same luck.
I continued to walk the rest of the way back home, and after seeing my dad’s cruiser in the driveway, decided to come back in up the roof and through my bedroom window- I’d rather not take my chances. Once I was inside, I pulled out my phone deciding that now would be a good time to call Allison- I could really use the distraction. Dialling her number, I held the phone up to my ear letting it ring until she answered.
“Vanessa!” Said her chirpy voice on the other end of the line. “I’m so glad you called.”
I smiled to myself. “I’m just glad you picked up- and girl, do I have some stories for you.”
DEREK
About an hour ago Erica, Boyd and Isaac had barged through the loft doors, talking a mile a minute.
“She completely shifted! It was insane- I thought she was going to kill me!” Erica shouted, waving her hands around trying to explain the events that unfolded at Dalton’s coffee shop earlier. From what I’ve gathered, Vanessa threatened Erica and when Erica tried to get away, Vanessa threw her into a wall- I don’t believe it, and Erica’s lies about her were just pissing me off. Boyd and Isaac had stayed pretty much silent, giving little noises of agreement whenever Erica gave them a chance to input something. “You’ve really got to get that mutt under control, Derek.”
“I’m trying Erica,” I sighed, trying to control the red anger inside my chest. “She was here all day yesterday training with me.”
Isaac lifted his head up from his hands. “She was what?”
“Well maybe you should stop that,” Erica butted in, completely ignoring Isaac. “She’s getting too strong.”
“Vanessa is not your problem, she’s mine-” I growled, Erica shrinking back a bit. “So stop worrying about it so much.”
“Not my problem?” Erica huffed, standing up to face me. “She’s erratic and hormonal- who knows what the hell she can do if someone pisses her off enough? You better control your bitch before I have to put her the fuck down!” She pushed me back a bit, and that sent me off the edge. I felt my eyes glow hot red as I swung an arm at Erica, sending her skidding across the floor. She came to a stop near the kitchen, a clear trail of blood going down the path I sent her on. Her entire arm was cut open from the wooden floors.
“Shit, Erica!” Boyd said, getting up quickly to go help her onto her feet. Isaac stood too but instead of helping Erica he just stared at me.
“Someone needs to put a muzzle on the both of you!” Erica shouted, limping across the loft with tears in her eyes. ‘If you weren’t my alpha I swear to god-”
I growled at her, shutting her up quickly. Boyd looked down and sighed.
“I’m going to take her home… Isaac, do you want a ride?”
“Yeah, but can you wait in the car for me? I just want to talk to Derek for a second.”
Boyd gave a little nod of agreement before hauling Erica out of the loft. My eyes went back to Isaac- he looked broken. I hadn’t noticed it when the others were here, maybe he hid it. In his eyes though, I could see, he wasn’t the same person. I cleared my throat, sitting down in the closest leather chair.
“So… Where are you staying now?” I asked him. He just shrugged.
“Kind of in between places- Scott’s, Erica’s and squatting at my old house.”
“Isaac, you know you’re always welcome here. There’s more than enough space in here for you if you need a permanent home-” I suggested, but he held up his hand.
“And have to deal with Vanessa parading in and out of your room at odd hours? No thanks- I’d like to avoid that thought at all costs.” Isaac sighed and I sucked in a sharp breath.
“About that…” I started. “Why haven’t you told anyone? You’ve got every right to, considering how we dragged you into this.”
“I love Vanessa, I’d never do that to her-” He said letting out a little laugh, but then his face fell dark. “And I feel like the second I say it out loud, it’s official. Right now, I’m still hoping this is just one long, dragged out nightmare.”
Listening to him say he loves her- present tense- makes a pang of guilt hit my chest. This pretty much happened almost overnight for him. One day he was happy with his girlfriend of two years, the next she’s telling him she’s been screwing his alpha behind his back. I look down at my hands, unable to find any words to say other than,
“I’m sorry.”
Isaac stood up, starting to walk towards the door. “I’m sorry too.”
After hearing about what happened at Daltons, I felt like I needed to see her. Erica can be vicious, and I want to make sure that she didn’t sink her claws into her for tossing her into a brick wall. I pulled up a block away from the Stilinski’s, careful to keep my headlights off so no one would notice me. When I got to the house, I climbed up the fence to the roof, lightly knocking on Vanessa’s window. It was covered with a curtain so I couldn’t see if she was in there- let alone even home. Luckily, after a few seconds the curtain was pulled back, Vanessa standing on the other side of the window. She frowned, sliding the it up enough for her to poke her head out.
“Hey,” I said with a little smile. I could tell how her face changed when I smiled at her- her heart sped up and blush fell across her cheeks. This time, however, it didn’t.
“Uh, what are you doing here? Now really isn’t a good time...” She said. I slid through her window, trying my hardest to make minimal noise when I hit the floor.
“I thought I should come check up on you- Erica told me about what happened at Daltons.”
She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. “You mean how she cornered me in an alley and I kicked her ass? Yeah, I think I’ll live.”
“Hold on, what?” I asked loudly, raising my eyebrows. “You actually punched Erica into a wall? I thought she just made that up to victimize herself.”
“No, I actually punched her into a wall and it scared the shit out of me.” Vanessa said turning towards me looking... scared? “I’ve never had that kind of power before and I don’t think I acquired it from one mediocre training session.”
“Did it feel like you... lost control?”
I thought back to earlier when Erica, Boyd and Isaac were in the loft and I sent Erica skidding across the floor. She hadn’t even done anything bad, but my anger took over. Vanessa’s eyes went wide at my suggestion.
“That’s exactly what it felt like.” She muttered, heart skipping a beat. “I think we have to talk to Deaton about this, especially because of the full moon next week. There’s probably more to this bond than just the lovey-dovey shit and good sex.”
I furrowed my eyebrows, stepping closer and wrapping my arm around her waist. “Just ‘good sex?’ Come on, Vanessa- I think I’ve earned at least ‘great sex.’”
Vanessa smiled as I pulled her body flush against mine, blush forming on her cheeks. “Fine- great sex.”
I leaned down, pressing my lips against hers in a smooth rhythm, her fingers finding their way to my cheek to deepen the kiss. We’d both been so lost in our own passion that not even I registered her bedroom door opening until someone cleared their throat loudly. Vanessa pulled away quickly, pushing herself away from me. I turned my head to see Allison standing in the doorway, tapping her foot.
“I’m sorry, did I interrupt something?”
I looked over and glared at Vanessa, trying to shake the chilling feel of the hunters eyes on me. She just gave me a sympathetic smile and shrugged.
“I told you it wasn’t a good time...”

CHAPTER NINE
VANESSA
“Vin!”
I turned, peering behind my locker and saw Scott coming down the hall, grin wide across his lopsided face. His kind of smile is contagious, so even in my sour mood I managed a smile back. I shut my locker, slinging my bag over my shoulder.
“What’s up, Scotty?” I asked, starting to make my way towards the double doors at the end of the hall, Scott following me. The dismissal bell had rung only a matter of a few minutes ago, and already the hall was pretty much a ghost town.
“Nothing much, just wondering how you’re holding up…” Scott ran his fingers through his mess of hair, voice tensing at the end. I rolled my eyes, stopping in my tracks.
Turning to him, I put my hand on his shoulder. “I’m fine, wolfie. You don’t have to check up on me, you know- I’m an adult.”
I turned back forward and continued to walk, Scott frozen for a second then stumbling to catch up.
“Of course, I know that! It’s just…. Vin,” He grabbed my shoulder, turned me back around to face him. “I know I don’t have all the details of the breakup, but what I do know is that you two were together for two years… You loved him Vin and he loved you too, even if he didn’t say it.”
My eyes started to well with tears, knowing very well they were going to overflow if Scott kept giving me his puppy-dog look. For some reason he always knew exactly what to say and exactly how to say it. I just pulled him into a tight hug, his broad shoulders helping his arms cradle me in an embrace. It took pretty much every ounce of willpower in my body not to start sobbing then and there.
Scott pressed his lips to my forehead before slowly starting to pull back away from his chest which I had somehow made my comfort object. He draped his arm around my shoulder, giving it a tight squeeze before continuing to walk down the hall with me.
We finally made it out the doors, Lydia’s car horn honking at me as soon as I stepped into the sunlight. Scott waved at Allison who was sitting in the backseat, and she sheepishly gave him a wave back. Lydia just rolled her eyes, pretending to gag. I’d started to say goodbye and walk away when Scott grabbed my arm, pulling me back towards him.
“Before you go, you should probably know I’m going to talk to Derek today.”
My face heated up, heart rate increasing. He’s going to know somethings up.
“Okay, cool. Don’t tear each other’s heads off, yeah?” I shot Scott a quick smile before quickly making my way down the quad steps away from his grasp. Didn’t mean his words couldn’t still get to me, though.
“Is there anything I should know before I go, Vinny?”
I sucked in a sharp breath, slowly turning on my heels.
“Nope, not that I can think of.” I smiled again, opening the passenger side door of Lydia’s car. “Call me later and tell me how it goes, okay? And… He’s not that bad, Scott. He thought he was doing the right thing so take it easy on him.” I shouted before sealing myself in the car, hoping that maybe Scott didn’t hear my heartbeat speed up. There’s so much he doesn’t know, and if Derek tells him, I’m screwed. I really hope this Alpha Beta Bond has some sort of don’t-tell-this-person-certain-things telepathy.
In other news, it’s been three days since Isaac officially moved out, and I have to admit the house feels a little empty. I can tell Stiles misses having his friend around, and honestly so do I. Before Isaac and I dated, we were still close and it feels strange not to have him around all the time. Even at school I hardly see him anymore.
“Stop moping, Vanessa. This breakup was inevitable, so just be glad you ripped the bandaid off.” Lydia chimed in, breaking me out of my daydream as I dazed out her car window.
I let out a deep sigh. “It wasn’t a bandaid, Lydia- It was a two year relationship.”
Putting on this show for the two of them is important- mostly because they can’t hear my heartbeat, so when they tell the rest of the pack the story, they’ll believe it. Deep down though, I can’t lie to myself. Being free of Isaac meant a weight off my shoulders when it came to Derek. Even though he was a brooding, inconsiderate asshole the other night, I can’t get my mind off of him. I feel like I see him everywhere I go. When I’m in school, I’ll see him around the corner and at home, I feel like I hear him stepping on the roof on his way to my window.
But they can’t know this.
As far as I know Isaac hasn’t told anyone about the whole sleeping with Derek thing, all they know is that he’s my alpha. That’s all they ever need to know. I think Allison may suspect after the night at the bar, but if she does she hasn’t said anything. Soon I found myself with my head back on the window, gazing outside.
“...Vanessa? Earth to Vanessa?” Allison’s voice rang out, causing me to snap back to reality.
“Huh?”
“Do you want us to drop you off at home or are you coming to Lydia’s before the game?”
The game. The state championships were tonight, and I’d nearly forgotten. Normally Isaac would drone on for days about something like this.
I shook my head. “I don’t think I’m going to come tonight.”
Lydia’s foot slammed on the break, sending both Allison and I jerking forward in our seats.
“What do you mean, ‘not coming?’” Lydia said as I rubbed my chest where the seatbelt dug in, trying to catch the breath that had been forced out of me. “Just because you’re not dating a player anymore doesn’t mean you’re off the hook.”
“Jesus Lyds,” I said with a groan. “I had a crappy day and I’m not feeling it. Just drop me off at home and I’ll text you guys later.”
I could tell that Lydia was about to retort with another snarky comment, but Allison clearing her throat in the backseat made her purse her lips.
It’s pretty windy this time of year in Northern California, and it’s just a High School lacrosse game. My dad will probably be sending me updates on Stiles bench warming skills and how much he wished he’d stayed home in this weather anyways. My mind wanders to how much warmer I would be at the game if I had Derek’s arms wrapped around me. I’ve noticed that for some reason- maybe it’s an alpha thing- Derek’s body emits crazy amounts of heat.
I sighed, the taste of Derek’s lips still feeling fresh on mine from that night at the loft, wanting nothing more than to have that feeling refreshed in my brain. I wonder if I could call him while everyone’s out tonight…
Before I knew it, Lydia had pulled into my driveway and was gently nudging me towards the door.
“Ally and I still have to get ready even though you’re not coming, so get out.” She said, giving me only a few seconds to wave goodbye before she was taking off back down the street. I smiled, shaking my head before heading up to the house.
DEREK
Peter’s fist hurdled towards my head, giving me only a split second to dodge out of it’s path, flipping my uncle over my shoulder as he tried to regain his momentum. He hit the ground hard, the cracking of his joints ringing in my head along with several groans as he tried to get himself up. I rolled my shoulders, getting back in fighting stance.
“Again,” I growled as Peter popped his shoulder back into place with a loud yelp.
“Derek, a thirty-two year old man such as myself can only take so many rounds of sparring before I can no longer pop bones back into place.” He said, getting into a stance like mine except his limbs were flimsy and bouncing erratically with his body.
“Less talking more punching- let’s go.”
Ever since Vanessa came to pick up Isaac the other night, I can’t get the image of her hands all over him out of my head. I’ve been running Peter, Boyd and Erica to their breaking point with all the fighting I’ve had to do to keep my head straight. Every time I close my eyes, I see how she looked at him, how her fingers trailed themselves perfectly down his arms. I need it to stop.
Before I was conscious of my motions, I’d thrown a punch at Peter, knocking him straight to the ground with another loud thud.
He let out a deep howl, rolling over onto his side. “No more, I tap out.”
“There is no tapping out,” I said, holding out my hand and pulling my uncle back to his feet. “Again.”
“Fuck off, Der.” He groaned, wiping the blood from his nose and heading to the kitchen. “Just because you’re pissed about Stilinski and Scarfy doesn’t mean you can kick the living crap out of your middle-aged uncle.”
“I’m not pissed about Vanessa and Isaac,” I lied, walking to the kitchen behind Peter, wetting a towel and cleaning up the blood on my knuckles.
Peter just laughed, throwing away the tissue he’d used to wipe the bloody snot off his face and crossing his arms. “Bullshit. It doesn’t take werewolf hearing to tell that was a lie.”
I groaned, rolling my eyes. “I’m just stressed because Scott wants to meet today… It’s probably just going to be a lot yelling and threatening each other.”
My uncle looked at me for a second and sighed, crossing across the kitchen and patting me on the shoulder. For a second, I felt the knot of tension in my body loosen a bit.
“You don’t always have to be the cold alpha, Derek. You can have feelings too and there’s other ways of getting them out that don’t involve breaking people’s bones.”
I laughed a little bit, eyes still focused down at my feet as Peter walked up the stairs to his room, shutting the door. I’ll never admit to it, but Peter’s not always a douchebag. Before the fire he was my role model- star athlete, great brother, great uncle, powerful werewolf. That version of him is still down there, and every so often he shows it. The other times, yeah- he’s just a total douche.
I pulled my phone out from the depths of my pocket, three missed calls from that same unsaved number appearing on my screen. I should just block it, but that won’t make it stop any sooner. Before I could set my phone down on the kitchen counter, a little ding rang from it and a text popped up on the screen.
I’m on my way over now -Scott
I’ve been trying to avoid this talk best I can, but I figure it’s best just to get it over with so the pack can more forward with trying to find some way to forgive me. After washing the blood from my knuckles and nose, I tried to clean up the bits of broken chair that had scattered when I threw Peter down onto it during one of our first matches. I may have been able to clean up the chair, but I couldn’t get rid of the pungent stench of blood that flooded the loft. That’s going to make a great impression.
About twenty minutes after I got the text, there was a knock at the door. I opened it, inviting Scott in, gesturing for him to take a seat on the couch. His posture since the minute he entered read hard, cold and cut off. He nodded at me when I opened the door- didn’t even say hello. While walking to the couch, he made quick, seemingly rehearsed steps.
“Can I get you anything?” I asked, but Scott shook his head- still no words. ”Alright…” I sat down next to him, trying to find the words to stay to start the conversation, but nothing came to mind. I don’t know how to apologize for what I did without sounding like a total asshole. Thankfully, Scott broke the tense silence.
“What the hell is wrong with you?”
My heart skipped a beat. “Going right to the hard questions, okay…”
“This isn’t a joke, Der. You fucking left her on my goddamn doorstep half dead. What kind of person does that? She was helpless!”
“She’s fine now, isn’t she? That’s what matters.”
Scott sighed, running his fingers through his hair. “I mean, I guess… But it doesn’t change what you did.”
“I know Scott, and I’m sorry- I really am. But if I didn’t do what I did, she would have died. What would you have liked me to do?” I rested my elbow on my knee, noticing that my voice had gotten significantly louder. Scott looked down at his hands, heart racing. He’s an alpha, but I’m still partially his alpha as well. This might not be as fair a fight as he thought. “What can I do?”
He looked up, a tiny bit of red glistening in his iris’. “Train her.”
That took me aback a bit. “What?”
Scott shot up from the couch, walking in the open floor space where my chair used to be. “Vinny, she’s… She’s brave- brave and ambitious, but she’s weak. You didn’t train her, so she’s nowhere near as strong as the rest of us.”
“Is that what Erica meant when she called her ‘practically human?’”
He nodded. “She always wants to be in the center of the fight, but I never let her because she can’t fight like us- she can’t heal like us. I’m scared that one day I’m not going to be able to keep her from a fight and it’s going to get her killed.”
“So what do you want me to do?”
“Help her. Train her, teach her everything you taught me, Isaac, Erica and Boyd.” Scott crossed his arms, eyes glowing red in the dim light. “Keep her safe.”
“I can train her, but you know it’s not my place to keep her safe.”
“Do you think I’m an idiot? The least you can do is keep her safe. I can smell it on both of you when you’re together. Don’t even get me started on the stench that covered her when she held the meeting about you being her alpha… I’m hoping that was from the night before and that you didn’t bone her before the meeting then not bother to show up.”
I looked down at my hands. “You can’t tell anyone about that.”
“No shit, I respect Vinny enough not to do that to her, but you know if Stiles finds out…”
“You don’t have to tell me twice.” I held up my hands in surrender. “Is that all? You just want me to train her?”
“Just train her? There’s nothing simple about training Vanessa, believe me- I tried.” Scott said, starting to cross the loft floor back to the door. “But yeah, that’s all. She told me to take it easy today… It seems that somehow she’d found a way to forgive you, so I guess the rest of us have to as well.”
I couldn’t help but smile a little bit, knowing that Vanessa had somehow managed to forgive me after finding out that I turned her and left her. Well, not even for that- even more for those things I said to her when she came to the loft and yell at me about turning her.
“Thanks, Scott.”
“Yeah, well… I’ve got to go. State Championships are tonight, and coach will hang me from the scoreboard if I’m late. Oh and also, Vanessa and Isaac broke up so don’t push her too hard- she’s a little fragile right now.” He said shooting me a warm grin before sliding out the loft door.
I felt a warm sort of beat in my heart, and a weight lifted off my guilty conscience after finding out they’d broken up. I guess all I have to do now is train the flight-risk beta I managed to avoid for two years.
VANESSA
The burning sunlight in my eyes and my deafening caller ringtone  is not exactly how I envisioned waking up on a Saturday morning. As far as I know, Stiles had not returned home from the after party he said he was going to after Beacon Hills won the state championship, which meant probably neither had Scott. The only reason I bothered to open my eyes at the sound of my ringtone is because one of the could be hungover and passed out on a park bench.
I checked the screen and saw Derek’s caller ID come across the top. Reluctantly, I slid my thumb across the screen, holding my phone to my ear.
“Hello?” My voice was hardly there on account of how I’d just opened my eyes a few seconds ago.
“Shit, did I wake you up?” Derek’s voice came from the other end of the line, his voice raspy too but naturally.
“Yeah, so someone better be dead or dying, Hale.” I rubbed my head, squinting at the sunlight coming through my window.
“No death- but get dressed because I’m coming to pick you up in a half hour.”
“Okay, do you mind telling me why?” I asked, but when I finished my question the line of the other end was beeping. He hung up.
I took the phone away from my ear watching as Derek’s name faded off the screen. My mind was rushing with questions like why is he picking me up? Where is he taking me? Will he be wearing the cologne that makes him smell like an erotica novel cover?
I groaned, shooting up from the bed and trotting over to my closet, throwing on a pair of leggings and a soft tee shirt that looks good for any occasion, which is convenient considering I have no fucking idea where Derek is taking me.
A half hour passed quickly, and before I knew it there was a loud knock at the door. When I opened it, my nose was overwhelmed with the familiar erotica novel cover scent. I smiled, looking up at Derek.
“Hey,” He said, a small grin coming across his face. For a second, watching how the lines under his eyes moved with his cheeks, I forgot why I ever could have been mad at him.
“Hi,” I stepped forward out of the house, locking the door behind me. “Ready to go?” Derek nodded, leading me to his shining black Camaro sitting in the driveway. I got in the passenger side of the car, situating myself in the soft leather seats.
“So where are we going?”
He twisted the key in the ignition, engine roaring to life. “The loft.”
Derek drove that Camaro like a controlled madman- swerving through cards, speeding down open roads. If it wasn’t for my confidence in his heightened senses, I probably would have shit myself sometime during that ride. He parked in the loft building lot, waving hello to the doorman as we took the elevator up to his floor. The entire time, I could feel my eyes fixed on his back, watching his muscles move as he walked and moved.
“Looking at something?”
I looked up and suddenly we were face to face, and it felt like my heart stopped. “Uh, no nothing. Do you wanna… open the door, maybe?”
Derek smiled and rolled his eyes, going to unlock the door then sliding it open. I’ve never been to the loft when the sun is bright like this. It shines right through the tinted windows, leaving beautiful orange patterns scattered across the gloomy space. I was so overtaken with awe that I hardly noticed when Derek had started to move all the furniture to the outer edges of the room.
“What are you doing?”
He finished moving the couch, setting it down with a loud thud. “Opening up the floor.”
“Why?”
“Training- take your shoes off and wrap this around your feet and hands.” He said, tossing me a roll of fabric medical tape.
I’d started to wrap the tape around my foot, Derek stretching out his shoulders.
“We’re going to start with basic sparring to see what you can do. Think you can handle that?”
I rolled my shoulders and neck, stepping into the open floor. “I can handle that.”
Or at least I thought I could. First round only lasted a few seconds before I was down on my ass.
“You failed.”
I scoffed, pushing myself back to my feet. “Well you aren’t exactly the greatest teacher.”
Derek rolled his eyes, crossing his arms. “In battle, you only have a matter of seconds to figure out your opponent and their weaknesses- try it again.”
Another thirty seconds passed and I was on the ground, Derek’s knee to my throat. The next time I lasted about a minute before he took me down. Round after round after round all ending with the same outcome. My entire body was aching and Derek was still in near perfect condition and able to make broody sex eyes at me. It was making it hard to focus.
“How is this helping me again?” I shouted at him, struggling to get back onto my feet, knees shaking under me.
“Watch how I fight- find my weakness. Stay ahead of your opponent, Vanessa.”
“You’re like a god, I’m not even sure you have a weakness.” I said, pulling my hair back into a ponytail. Before I had even finished putting my hair up, Derek swung his fist at me, but I ducked just in time, lunging at his chest- he hardly budged. I managed to slide away before he could grab me, swinging my leg at his knee. My foot just barely grazed it, but I saw him wobble. Before I could process what was going through my head, Derek’s sweaty body was back on top of mine, both of our breathing heavy.
“This is hopeless,” I groaned, squirming out from under Derek.
“Not hopeless, you just need practice.”
I scoffed. “Why are you even doing this? You don’t have to pretend you care, ya’ know.”
He shook his head. “Scott asked me to, and I’m really in no position to oppose him especially when this is such a small task. Now come on, let’s keep going.” Derek lightly tugged at the hem of his sweaty shirt, pulling it up and over his head. My eyes wandered to his chest, body glistening with a thin layer of sweat under the light, shadows outlining his already crazy prominent muscles. “Distracted?”
I looked up at him and he had this little smirk on his face, obviously aware of what he’s doing- there must be drool dripping out of my mouth. But no matter, because two can play at that game, Hale.
“Me? Distracted? No way.” I said, grabbing my sweat covered shirt, pulling it over my head and discarding it behind me. Now it was Derek who had drool hanging out the corner of his mouth. “You, on the other hand…”
“That’s not fair, you’ve got boobs.”
“Who said we had to play fair?” I crossed my arms, raising an eyebrow at him. His gym shorts weren’t exactly good at hiding the bulge growing in them, and it took every bit of control I had not to make a snarky comment about it.
Derek narrowed his eyes at me, rolling his shoulders. It didn’t take a good werewolf to smell the arousal coming off of him, and right now we could pretty much cut the sexual tension with a knife. “Fine, if you want to play like that,” He growled, taking only two steps before my body was flush against his, face cupped in his hands, and I was pushing myself onto my toes to kiss him. It was a hungry, open mouthed kiss that I could practically feel Derek melting into. I’ve got him where I want him.
I hooked my leg around his, closing it tight around his knee, causing him to break the kiss and fall. I pushed him back, straddling his chest, elbow to his throat. He looked… pretty petrified to say the least.
“Always stay one step ahead, right?” I whispered with a satisfied grin on my face. Derek let out a low laugh, rolling his eyes.
“Training concluded for the day, now shut up and relax,” He said, hooking his arms around me, flipping me onto my back and pressing himself between my legs. I groaned, feeling his growing bulge on my lightly covered core, sliding my nails lightly down his back. His lips attacked my neck, sucking deep purple marks then smoothing them over with his tongue. His claws must have come out on one hand, because before I could process it he was using one of them to cut open the front of my bra, letting it fall off my shoulders. Reaching down between us, I slid my hand past the waistband of his shorts and grabbed his still growing length.
“Fuck, Vanessa…” He groaned into my ear, making shivers go down my whole body. My legs hooked around Derek’s waist, letting him pick me up from the floor and carry me over to the kitchen counter- kinky, but the closest surface.
“Please,” I moaned, Derek using his free hand to help me push his shorts down his legs. I pushed him back from the counter far enough for me to slide down and drop to my knees in front of him.
“Vanessa, you don’t- fuck!” He started to say, but didn’t even have time to finish his warning before I had half his length down my throat. His hands immediately went to my head to help guide me, his hips bucking involuntarily as I ran my tongue on the underside of his cock. Normally, this is something I don’t do, but something about him… I can’t control myself. “Fuck, you look so good like that… I’m not going to last much longer if you keep that up,” He groaned out, like music in my ears. “Fuck it, stop- get up here.”
I pulled myself away, slowly standing up before Derek turned me around, pushing my chest down so I was bent over the counter. Oh shit, I thought to myself. This is really happening.
Derek took the hem of my leggings and panties, shoving them down my things before swiping his tip against my entrance. The moan that erupted from mine and Derek’s lips when he finally pushed himself into me was porn worthy. My fingers tried to find something to grab, but only managed to dig aimlessly into the granite countertop I was bent over. He began a slow, agonizing pace causing me to let out a little whimper with each deep thrust. He sprawled his hand onto my back as his pace started to pick up, sending me closer to the edge with every motion.
“Fuck, Derek… I’m gonna- oh, fuck!” Before I could finish my words, I was thrown over the edge by one thrust in just the right spot. My claws came out through my nails, putting holes in the granite countertop. I felt my entire body come undone, but Derek didn’t stop. He pulled out for a second to turn me around and face him, quickly pushing himself back in and resuming his movements.
“Shit Vin,” He growled, taking my bottom lip gently between his teeth before his lips began an assault on mine. I moaned into his mouth, feeling my last orgasm drip down my thigh as another one started to form in my stomach. One of his hands was tangled in my hair, using it to hold my head at just the right angle where he could suck even more perfect purple marks into my neck and shoulder. String after string of profanity and moans left my mouth as my second orgasm came quickly down my body, making me dig my claws into Derek’s back. He winced, but that’s it- his movements didn’t stop for a second. In fact, I think it just added fuel to his fire.
“Der, I’m close.” I managed to get out through my various moans.
“Fuck, me too,” He threw his head back, angling his hips upward so each of his quick thrusts swiped his tip against my sweet spot. My orgasm was pooling on the kitchen counter under me, more dripping the closer I got. Then in an instant, I came unraveled at Derek’s touch, trying to muffle my screams by biting into Derek’s shoulder, but failed. I tightened my walls around his cock, making him let out a deep groan and release himself into me. His pace started to slow down as we both rode out our highs, finally slumping on each other for support.
“That was…” I said, still trying to catch my breath.
Derek smiled, gently pressing his lips against my head. “That was incredible.”
DEREK
Vanessa stayed for hours, just laying in my bed, talking and laughing. I don’t understand how she’s this pure- this good, even to someone like me. Someone who basically called her a whore when I was the one who was at fault.
When I first picked her up off the counter and brought her to the bedroom, her bare body touched my blanket and she wrapped herself in it, erupting into a fit of giggles.
“What?” I asked her, sliding down on the empty spot.
“Nothing,” She said, grinning with blush across her cheeks. “You just look really good naked.”
I smiled back at her, pushing the blanket off her body so I could take her into my arms. She’s so small that my muscular body can just engulf her- I don’t think she minded, though. She seemed to feel right at home with her face buried in my neck.
“So, your knee...” Vanessa finally said after several minutes of silence.
“My knee?”
“Yeah, that’s your weakness- why?”
I sighed, absentmindedly sliding my fingers down her curves, tracing the lines to her little freckles. “Screwed it up playing basketball in high school. The thing completely popped on a weird jump-shot landing, and it’s never really been the same.”
“Hm,” Is all she said in response.
“Now you know mine, what’s your weakness, Vin?”
Vanessa quickly sat up. “First of all, don’t call me Vin or Vinny- I hate those fucking nicknames,” She said, waving her finger at me. “Second, tit punch, maybe? I really have no idea.” She laughed to herself, laying back down into my arms.
“I like those nicknames. They’re pretty.”
“Are not.”
“Are to,” I teased her, earning a little nudge with her elbow to my chest. “Take it easy there, Vinny.”
She laughed a little louder this time, her head rolling in a sort of beautiful careless way, angling itself enough that I could see the deep marks I’d left imprinted on her skin. She sighed, burying her face back in the crevice of my neck, giving it a light kiss.
“I wish we could lay here forever,” She whispered.
“Me too.”
But sadly I knew that the second we left this bed, things were probably going to change, not for the better either. I just wanted to enjoy the right now, holding this gorgeous little spaz in my arms as she slowly drifted off to sleep.
