A quick thought on a William Blake stanza

"To see a World in a Grain of Sand

And a Heaven in a Wild Flower

Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand

And Eternity in an hour"

This are the first 4 lines from William Blake's Auguries of Innocence. And it was actually the wish to write down these following thoughts that made me go ahead and start a blog. This doesn't fit Instagram, as I leave my account for short quotes and references on photographs I take, and doesn't fit reddit for being too personal, and also I have no idea which subreddit this kind of thing would go to. Well, moving on.

Up until now, I have had 3 girlfriends. Some of you may consider only 2 of them actual girlfriends, or just 1, or maybe none. Let's talk a bit about them.

The first one was a long-distance relationship, me in Canada, her in Norway. Never saw her in real life, not before dating her, nor after. We met online, and we dated (if you call that dating) for almost 3 weeks. She hated her looks, her parents, her house, her friends. It's not like she deeply hated all of that, it's just that she wasn't really enjoying being where, when and how she was.

The second one was, again, a long-distance relationship, me in Canada (for half of the relationship), her in Barueri (city in São Paulo). We met online, dated for almost 3 months. We met once. She hated her looks, her neighborhood, herself, and had a few psychological problems.

The third one was, surprise surprise, a long-distance relationship, me in Sorocaba, her in São Bento do Sul (stats of Santa Catarina, around 600km away). We dated for almost 3 years. We met once, but I stayed there for 4 days. She hated her looks, herself, her past, her actions, her mom, had some psychological problems.

Describing them like this they might look a bit like each other, but they were completely different. And I can say that, even though things didn't work out, and I don't want to get back with any of them, I did love all of them. In fact, they were everything to me back then.

Which leads me into this 4 lines. They sound prophetical, biblical even. It's been quoted quite a bit, to be honest, a lot more than I expected after I heard it while playing Devil May Cry 5. They sound amazing, but they were still lacking any actual meaning to me. Not that they were bad, it's just I couldn't really see anything on it for a while.

Until one day, while I was thinking about life, as you do, I gave it a bit of meaning. It is probably not the meaning Blake intended, but a meaning nonetheless. All my ex's thought they were nothing and meant nothing. They were wrong. They were everything to me. I saw a world in them.

We all go through bad times, studying for exams, getting into college, being alone and away from your family and home. We all go through hell. But these girls, as "ordinary" as they were, I saw heaven in them, and they helped me a lot in bad times.

When I was in love with each of them, I was basically blind to everything else. I did everything for them. I don't mean that I gave them whatever they wanted, glad I didn't date anyone that was into getting gifts, but I'd dedicate hours and hours that I could have spent sleeping, playing games, watching stuff, studying, to make them happy. So they could smile and know they meant something to someone. For that, I'd hold infinity in the palm of my hand.

And all this time I spent with them, I also enjoyed. Skyping, calling, texting, sending funny pics, sending memes, being cute, messing with the other. We used to do a lot of stuff. It was great. Even though time went by really fast, as it does when we are having fun, it always seemed like an eternity had passed in an hour.

A lot has happened since my last girl, now almost a year without her. I honestly am looking for someone else (not long-distance, this time), but will I ever be able to see a world in a grain of sand again? Or a heaven in a wild flower? Will I ever hold infinity in the palm of my hand again? Will I ever be able to fit eternity in an hour once more?

I hope so, but as Blake says, in the same poem:

"Some are Born to sweet delight 

Some are Born to Endless Night "
