Convinced this scene was the inspiration for the end of Deadpool 2. The whole "you time-sliding son of a bitch, you did this for me?" exchange is basically this, just in reverse.
Tumblr media
"I didn't do it for you." "Naww, you did it for me." "No I didn't." "You did." "I didn't." "Pretty sure you did." "I'm positive I didn't."
Shut up you two are best friends now.

One of my favorite examples of "Deadpool's not actually an idiot."
Context: In this issue, Deadpool takes down a corrupt police department in very rural Georgia. Rather than kill 'em all (as suggested by the cops' mastermind), he invites the Feds to catch them all red-handed at their illegal moonshine distillery. Initially, he's cuffed and detained along with everyone else.
His little interaction with the ATF agents at the end is fantastic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love it. It's like...summary of my favorite version of Deadpool. He's heroic, he does good things, he doesn't kill anyone in this issue - but he's also dangerous, his good intentions don't erase his bad habits or volatile nature. He definitely wanted to kill the whole lot of 'em (in fairness, one of theirs killed him first, that's why he got involved) and had to dial it back to "wait, I don't do that anymore."
Plus - smart enough to turn his bad reputation into an advantage, sometimes. He probably wouldn't have hurt those agents (not on purpose), but they don't need to know that...
IDK I just love this sequence. :)

I understand the appeal of wanting every adult hero to instinctively adopt teenage Peter Parker, but can it really beat the hilarity of acknowledging that at 15 Peter was 5'10", unusually buff, went by a moniker with Man in it, wore a creepy full face mask, and had a tightly guarded secret identity and probably a Queens accent thick enough to have come out of a jello mold, and adult heroes reasonably responded to him by going, “Wow, this grown man is an immature asshole for no reason.”

Grabbed @speedygoreman's last reply from this post because it was getting kind of long but I also wanted to rant a bit about that 2023 arc...
I had to tap out of reading that one. I really don't have the stomach for cutesy romance, so Valentine being immediately sparkly sugar sweet and the repeated focus on "cute cute cute" was... a lot. Then even the promised body horror elements, the symbiote, became a dog named Princess that talks in "papa take me for walkies" cutespeak. It was too much for me.
That's all personal preference though, I'm glad other people enjoyed Val and Wade together!
That complaint aside though, the premise didn't really make sense to me. Deadpool has so much baggage around human experimentation and being drugged into compliance, and the story hook for this one was... him agreeing to be an experiment (incubating that symbiote) while being heavily drugged by Valentine?
Then Valentine's just... look, it's not unusual for Wade to fall head over heels for a pretty face. What's unusual is for them to like him back, instantly, NO aversion at all to his face or his past or his everything. All he can focus on is "omgomg they called me cute eeee" instead of thinking "actually, that's really fucking suspicious..."
It was so off that I thought at first "oh, Valentine's going to be a villain?" Like there was going to be a big heel-turn moment where we found out Val was purposefully keeping him drugged out of his mind and distracted to give the symbiote time to grow into a huge threat. Like... how do you grow an evil alien? Manipulate an unkillable merc into protecting it for you by preying on his obvious desperation to be loved. Devious, tragic, and a trick Deadpool would very much fall for. You could even spin it so Valentine's being blackmailed, "it was a ruse at first but now I've actually fallen for you," and still get the "happy couple" ending without Valentine being the real villain.
Instead, no, it's just... Val and Wade are instantly in love, perfect, cutesy and lovey-dovey, the symbiote is instantly tame and they adopt it like a dog together, they move in together, check all the boxes of a self-insert wish fulfillment fanfic?
I know there's a lot of sentiment among fans to let Wade be happy for once, give him a break from being constantly hurt by the narrative - and I assume that's who they were trying to write this for. Give him the picturesque happy ending, at least for a while. I mean, there's always got to be some build up first, give him something to lose before he gets knocked back down - but having it given to him so fast, and so effortlessly, makes it feel kind of hollow.
Makes it feel like a too-quick setup for an inevitable "oh NO Val and Princess are DEAD, they were too pure for this sinful earth!" issue right around the corner.

One more thought here since I can't help myself: I wonder if the whole "the movies ALMOST feel right but not QUITE?" feeling is because the story just ends too soon.
Deadpool's story arcs in the comics seem to (very roughly) follow a cycle, from what I've read so far.
Dirtbag Deadpool phase. He's a mercenary, he's selfish, petty, vindictive, and pretty much only concerned with looking out for himself.
Deadpool thinks "actually this sucks, I want to be better than this, I want people to like me" and starts trying to improve.
Things go well. He starts racking up some wins, making some friends and allies, and building some trust. Things go wrong sometimes, it's not all sunshine, but generally this is when he's at his most stable, he's got resilience and a support network.
Things go wrong - VERY wrong. Maybe he's been manipulated and betrayed again, or he just can't keep it together, his friends and family get hurt and it's his fault, etc. Basically, the writers decide they want a partial narrative reset.
After enough loss or failure, Deadpool self-destructs. He failed at being better, so FINE, this is his swan dive to rock bottom. He gets reckless, cruel, burns bridges, pushes everyone away, frightens or attacks allies to make sure they'll never come near him (and get hurt) again.
Return to step 1, repeat.
Granted, I don't see how you'd get through all of that in a single movie (it happens over years worth of comics), it's just a limitation of the medium. But I think that's the heart of why Movie!Deadpool feels "...not WRONG, exactly, just incomplete" to me.
The movies take place entirely in step 3. Wade's already an "honorable" merc at the start of the flick, he doesn't kill indiscriminately, he's not even that selfish. His mutation and torture by Weapon Plus is a low point, sure, but he comes out of it "together" enough to return to his friends and form a plan of action, he still has support and resilience. Then the movie ends on a "win" because the trick to a happy ending is knowing when to stop telling the story.
We never really get to see Dirtbag Wade in the movies. He's a detestable prick, but he's still part of the overall picture that makes up Deadpool in my head.
The more Deadpool comics i read, the less i feel like Ryan Reynolds fits him and that makes me feel....odd, like kinda left out from all the love this casting is getting. He was really good as Wade Wilson in X-men Origins, his Weapon 11 is terrible and an insult to the character of Deadpool tho.
But when he got his own movie he was just Ryan Reynolds, and i know, i know "ofc he is, he's played by Ryan" sure but....that just feels off for me, and i wanted to know why, and i think i got it.
Firstly it's the way he talks, Ryan has this tone of voice that doesn't fit the way Wade usualy talks in the comics, his kinda high smooth sarcastic tone feels off to me. Partly because Wade doesn't sound like that at all, Wade has a very rough voice, sounding like Demi Moore, his voice sounds like wet gravel, according to Cable and Blind Al. Ellie, his daughter, said his voice sounds weird, whitch Wade said it's because of the scar tissue.
Also the way he talks, his jokes and the tone of his voice doesn't fit the DP energy. Fabian Nicieza, Deadpools co-creator and writer of most of his 90s appereances before Kelly wrote the first run, said he imaged Wade to sound like Denis Leary, whitch for the ones not aware, is a very unhinged and agressive sounding man, and it fits perfectly the way he talks.
Also Fox!Wade's humor isn't really the same as comics!Wade, movie Wade uses references, complicated swears and names with alot of sarcasm. Comics Wade meanwhile?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not so much, he also doesn't even break the 4th wall as often usualy, some of those aren't even too obvious 4th wall breaks.
One thing i feel like the movies got right is Wades softness, he's a very emotional man, especialy when it comes to relationships and other people.
One thing the moves didn't quite get right is Wade and his violence problems, in his first comics he was fighting with his violence, his past, he was trying to be better after years of being a villian, and that change is often brought by his nee crush or love interest or idol, because he wants to be better for them, even if he usualy doesn't feel worthy of their love, yet he tries and tries.
There was a deleted scene in one of the movies where he and Vanessa were in Mexico and Wade lost it and killed the scamming doctor and it perfectly showed Wades issues.
His relationships were also all made simpler, Weasel is his fuctional friend, Ness is his girlfriend, Al is his funny roommate and friend. Back then Wade and his relationships weren't simple, he was like Moon Knight, he experimented, he wasn't very known, he was allowed to be odd and weird and out there. And i blame the game tbh, because now the movie was heavily influenced by what the internet thinks Deadpool is and the character is suffering for it now. Maybe i am just a jaded edgy 18yo but that's how i feel.
Now you're propably thinking what would my solution be, well i got a solution in mind, but you most likely won't wanna hear it...but i will still tell you in the next post.

I hadn't heard the Denis Leary comparison before either but that's a really good one for the cadence!
One addition I thought of: I really like Deadpool's gameplay in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. They did a great job here capturing his fighting style - he's primarily a keep-away character, but works best if you're constantly moving and switching up your tactics.
But back on topic: more than most other characters, he is so talkative. Nearly every attack has a voice line (Nolan North in this game). He can be straight up annoying to fight with or against - which is pretty much on par with how he's described in the comics.
youtube
Even if you're not spamming the same attacks, he just never shuts the hell up. I have to mute the game eventually or I'll hear "have gun will shoot!" and "pineapple surprise!" in my nightmares... which is a level of accuracy I kind of appreciate lol.
(also thanks @jhirowolf & @wade-a-minute it's fun getting to talk about talkin' lol)
Deadpool's voice and its media portrayals
I read this post by @jhirowolf and @spider-mand, which inspired me to make my own post specifically about dp's voice - please read the og post first!
In the comics it's known that Deadpool has a unique voice - his speech boxes are yellow while everyone elses' are white. What makes it unique is its quality (it's described as rough, raspy and gravelly) but I also think that it's its cadence too (i'll get in to this below). Unfortunately, Ryan's voice in the movies doesn't really come close to this - for multiple reasons.
Ryan's voice physically is very smooth and also pretty high but I get the sense that as dp, he doesnt really do much for his voice, he is pretty much just himself and cracking jokes. As @jhirowolf pointed out, he kind of has this smooth, sarcastic tone. For me the vibe is that of a stereotypical side-character who mumbles sarcastic comments at whatever the other characters are doing. Ryan's voice is often mellow, calm and even
I dont have concrete examples right now, but in the comics SO many characters call Wade insane mere minutes upon meeting him, despite the fact that they dont know anything about him apart from the fact that he is a mercenary.
Why? Because of his voice!
Immediately upon hearing him talk they conclude he is unhinged and unstable and generally unwell. He's loud, aggressive, speaks a mile a minute and on top of that makes dark jokes serious situations that no one else laughs at. It freaks people out and rightfully so! Adding on to this, I think he varies his pitch and rhythm frequently, further making him appear unstable because his voice is never even or monotone for more than a few seconds. I'm basing this on the fact that his speech bubbles are so much bigger than everyone else's (he talks a lot) and also bc he varies his facial expressions and body language a lot when he speaks.
@jhirowolf mentions that Denis Leary was the inspiration for his voice, which i had no idea about but looking at this video, I think his cadence is perfect. You feel that unlimited energy, the loudness, the unpredictableness, his voice and the look behind his eyes make him seem manic and frantic - which it should! It puts people on edge around him, gives him his reputation of being unpredictable and also makes him regard him as insane. Wade doesnt give a shit about norms for socializing, how loud or crass he is - hes got shit to say and hes gonna say it, no matter how much it may annoy, offend or make others uncomfortable
youtube
i think the teaser trailer for the first movie could be Ryans best work when it comes to wades voice
youtube
Conversely, this video could be the worst:
youtube
Like this is purely Ryan, theres no deadpool here. its just his own shameless self-promo in a dp suit
Nolan's voice, on the other hand, isn't perfect either bc it kind of has the similar smooth quality as ryans, its not gravelly, raspy or anything. But his cadence is soo good! He's calm one minute but you never know when he's gonna snap and lose his shit, i love it
youtube
And yeah, Nolan's performance and the funny moments are the only good thing to come out of this game (well i guess another positive is that it made him more popular, it certainly was one of my first encounters which made me interested in him). The bad thing is the amount of damage it did to the complexity of dp's character - they stripped away his layers, the serious and tragic parts that make up who he is, instead of this they literally gave him 1 trait - insane. And that was it. I blame Way's 2008 run for this bc he essentially did the same thing - but the game turned it up to 11. Way at least included several serious and earnest moments where Wade was forced to be introspective and face his issues
in conclusion - so far our ears havent yet been blessed to hear wade's voice

16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
I genuinely do not understand the appeal of heroes being extremely violent on Wade Wilson unless make sense for the character.
Like no sorry I cannot believe all the avengers would be okay to downright dismember this guy despite him being an asshole and a killer. They didn't direct this type of energy to any other villain including the ones who can't die.
I just low-key do not vibe with the gore on Deadpool for sake of gore specially directed at him. I don't find funny, don't think it comes closer to slap-stick humour with the length they do it and when they bend the rules and characterizations of certain super-heroes in the name of the "joke" it makes me lose the respect for the characters, the writer and the history involved.
The same thing applies to jokes regarding his appearance and his skin condition, specially his mental health when it comes to the same people. I do think there's nuance and absolutely when he punches down plays in a totally different direction.
Also to me the only few people that make sense of this kind of joke are Weasel and other characters who does this type of joke in the regular basis, but no you are not going to make me sit there and believe that Captain America would make fun or act disgusted towards the appearance of a cancer and tortured survivor, or be comfortable with his team fuckin dismembering him. Specially when he was literally on the World War ll.
Also, despite of how mean Spidey is towards people he doesn't like I don't buy either that he'd go for the appearance after knowing what Wade been through sorry, I can be wrong. I can be specially wrong. But even if I am it's not something I'd like to read.
I mean c'mon Wade's shitty personality is enough material guys.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one immediately questioning the voice. Marvel Comics in the 90s didn't do the "each character gets their own color" thing, different or off-color word bubbles were comic book shorthand for "this character's voice is very noticeably Not Normal." Wade's never spoken in "normal" word bubbles post-mutation. Characters have described it as gravely, coarse, grating, etc. Ryan Reynolds, while his performance was excellent, was just NOT what I expected to hear. Even Nolan North's version surprised me, although I feel like he did at least try to lean into making Deadpool sound manic/unpredictable as a way to make his voice strange.
There's a lot I do like about the movie version - like you said, I'm glad they highlighted his big 'ol heart. It would have been SO easy to cash in on a movie full of violence, sex, and fart jokes, I'm glad they took the time to give it more soul than that.
But I totally agree that it feels like "something's missing," and it's probably the anger. We see a little bit - but not the impulsive, vindictive kind of rage he has in so many of his earlier comic runs.
That deleted scene would have fit super well! More than likely it got cut because 2 hours isn't much time, you can't show TOO much of Wade as a "bad guy" if you want the audience to like him - and "impulsive, extreme violence" isn't very likable.
...but maybe it could be. Frankly, I've had some shit experiences with healthcare institutions - watching Wade go berserk and kill a shady doctor would just make me want to hug him and never let go. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
The success of the movies may have something to do with why even his recent comic book portrayals feel a little... "declawed," now that I think about it.
