this act follows maras origins as spiderwoman! she starts as a lonely recluse, bullied and unwelcome by all of her peers. (seether - veruca salt)

enter: the octavians

Dr. Octavian moves his business, alchemax laboratories, up to seattle washington. his work seems innocent enough to the average civilian, developing things like medicine and technology, but mara senses there is something more at play.

so, she begins protesting, documenting whatever she can to expose what she believes as something unethical and unnatural. though she doesn’t know exactly what that is. Oliver Octavian, Dr. Octavian’s adopted son, is in change of removing her from the laboratory grounds. one of these times, a stray (genetically altered) spider, as part of a new confidential experiment, is transferred from oliver to mara. which naturally, sets into motion a series of… canon events.

canon event ONE: the bite

mara is bitten by a mysterious radioactive spider. giving her supernatural abilities such as increased strength, agility, and intuition. though at first, she is hesitant to utilize this, a dangerous encounter for her grandma may, only prevented by maras newfound abilities, proves to the both of them that mara can’t ignore them.

as time goes on, mara becomes more comfortable with her powers. she discovers through her vigilante-esque outings and new found stealth that she has a better opportunity to expose the octavian’s. not only that, but she uses this opportunity to give exclusive coverage of this lab in her journalism portfolio, which lands her a job at “The Daily” newspaper (Detective - No Doubt)

as she gets used to a new work environment, she finds herself once again ostracized by her peers. but this time, it’s out of disbelief and disregard of her intellect due to her age and gender. (All I Really Want - Alanis Morisette) however, editor in chief J. Joan Jameson sees maras potential and becomes a sort of mentor to her. together, these women gather incriminating evidence wrapped in maras, very well written, debut front page article.

this is not without consequence. enraged by the tainting of his name, Dr. Octavian sends out his first “field test”. Norman Osborn, a running candidate for mayor, has been corrupted by greed and perfection. this leads Dr. Octavian to offer a solution of power, injecting him with a new serum he has been working on, sending Osborn into an almost physcotic state. Dr. Octavian sends him to send a message to The Daily, never to try him.

canon event TWO: death of a mentor

in a grueling battle, mara fights off the green goblin as the spider. she defeats him, but not without a loss. Jameson, trapped inside the crumbling building, loses her life in the battle. this is maras first loss as a hero, and it stays with her forever. the first she couldn’t save, and she is not the last.

because the battle mostly took place within the coverage of rubble, no one besides Jameson, Osborn, and Mara know what really happened during this conflict. because of this, and the disappearance of Osborn, police on the scene can only place blame on the strange masked vigilante who emerges from the wreckage. (Police On My Back - The Clash) from here on, the police have a great distrust of The Spider and continue to hunt and attempt to detain her. though, the rest of the city has a more ambiguous view of the new hero.

this part ends with mara accepting her role in this game of chess against Dr. Octavian, and the many obstacles he will throw her way. she is now dead-set on exposing exactly what he does behind closed doors. discovering what he really did to dr. conners, and where he disappeared to. taking down the lab for good.

context: the mysterious dr. octavian has a working theory of mara mayfield being the masked vigilante spiderwoman (more commonly referred to as the spider). this chapter of the story focuses on his plan to capture and study her spider-like abilities (that she gained via an genetically altered spider from his very lab). spoiler alert: this plan includes sending his son, Oliver Octavian, to spy and report on mara and her family, hoping that he will gain her trust enough to get a confession of her secret identity to him. (which does not end well)
