Zeus of Ugento, bronze statue c. 530 BCE. I was so fascinated by the crown/headdress that I had to draw my Zeus wearing it. I love the art from the Archaic period. ^^

Heaven is not fit to house a love like You and I
Orpheus & Eurydike as that one painting of Paolo & Francesca by Ary Scheffer, mostly inspired by Hozier's Francesca ( which always reminds me of them ) and the fact that I can relate anything to my favs
( so sorry that there's no background and all but I think the sense of emptiness is quite fitting ( that and drawing all those folds in the fabric drained me way too much to try and bother with something more complex heughh )
#how the hell do you drop works like this randomly Phoebe#ancient greece#greek myth art#greek myth#orpheus and eurydice#eurydike#eurydice#orpheus

the fact that zeus is not only a paternal god but also one who has explicitly carried and given birth to his own children... i think it's beautiful & i would love to see more depictions of zeus as the patron and protector of pregnant trans men.

Strawberries aren't sacred to Hermes, koumara are!
It is said that the strawberry tree was important to Hermes because he was nursed under one.
There's this misconception going around that Hermes loves strawberries and they'd make a great offering 🍓. At first, I thought so too, but actual strawberries grow on bushes, not trees. Misleading in name, the strawberry tree (also known as the cane apple tree) produces round, red, and lychee-like fruit called koumara, not strawberries. Strawberry plants aren't even closely related to this tree! 😅

However, with this particular fruit being native to the Mediterranean and Western Europe, they're hard to come by if you don't live in those areas, so I can't imagine Hermes will be upset with an offering of strawberries. Simply use your discretion there. It's just important to know what fruit is actually sacred to him. 😊

By the way, no worries if you've been one of the people who thought Hermes was a strawberry-holic, especially because many others mention that being the case. I almost put "go strawberry picking" on my devotional acts to Hermes list... But having gone strawberry picking myself, I had a hard time picturing him being nursed under a small bush close to the ground 😆. That's actually the only reason why I looked into it further, and I'm glad I did. 😁

If wicca has no haters I'm dead. Even if you take Gerald Gardener out of it it's still just full of cultural appropriation

Praises to the Great Goddess Selene

Oh, Great Goddess Selene, radiant and shining, daughter of Hyperion and Theia, mother of the Horai and the Menai, and lover of Endymion. Most blessed Goddess of the moon, so valiantly pulling your glowing chariot endlessly through the night, we thank you for all that you do, we thank you for you infinite beauty and your blessings of our fertile land due to your gracious sways of the tide. Oh amazing and graceful Selene, ever so free, ever so shining.

People treating helpol like it’s a “cute, quirky fandom” is so infuriating….
Like someone I know heard I practice Hellenic polytheism, then suddenly they started referring to the gods as though they practice it too, when they only know about the gods from media/childhood. Then they randomly go around claiming to practice helpol as well, (using #helpol in their posts), “for the aesthetic,” even though they don’t understand it/make fun of certain gods/don’t treat it with reverence. It drives me mad.

“Ares was not worshipped as a protector of woman in antiquity,” and “I worship Ares as a protector of woman,” are two statements that can and should co-exist. Every myth, every epithet was created in the brain of a human, in some point of time. We are not limited to the thoughts and ideals of the ancient.
