In the Splatoon fandom, I think everyone is overthinking on the reasons why inklings die in water. The answer is quite simple when you look at real life cephalopods.

You see, real life cephalopods have thin and very sensitive skin, they are extremely sensitive to water acidity, harmful pollutants, and salinity. Put a squid in polluted ocean water, freshwater, or chlorinated pool water, it would quickly die. The exact same logic applies to their descendents, the Inklings and Octolings.

Logically, the past humans left the oceans too polluted and acidic for cephalopods to survive, and given that they can't survive in freshwater, they were forced to take to the land, as well as many other sea creatures sensitive to the ocean changes. Inklings don't stand much of a chance in ocean water, freshwater, or chlorinated water. Battling Inklings would logically use such waters as battle barriers. Inklings dissolve especially easy given their high body ammonia concentration, just like their real life ancestors, the squids.

Yeah, Squids rapidly decompose too, which is why we don't get many squid fossils!

Inklings and Octolings can still easily tolerate clean salt water, meaning they have special salt water pools to swim and have fun in, as evident by the resorts and swim gear seen in game.

There, mystery solved, that wasn't so hard to figure out.

Insane headcanon time. Let's have a look at Shiver.

So her design is interesting. Notably, she seemingly lacks the black "mask" marking around the eyes that every other Inkling and Octoling seems to have. Why?

Let's look at the other colors present. Her "hair" is colored blue. As I've written about before, this is the result of structural coloration. Almost all blue in nature is produced by reflection of light, not pigmentation - this would be no exception. And her hands have this rich cherry red coloration. That sort of red color, in nature, is usually caused by carotenoids, which are pigments produced by plants and taken in by animals through the diet. So that could be carotenoids (or possibly also structural color). The eye masks, meanwhile, would be the result of melanin, which is the pigment responsible for most black, brown, and duller red/orange/yellow colors in animals. Based on the gamut of skin tones present in Inklings/Octolings we can presume that, as in humans, melanin pigments their skin. And Shiver has very pale skin - meaning there's not much melanin there either. So, theoretically, a lack of melanin production would result in Shiver's pale skin and lack of eye masks, while not affecting the blue hair and cherry-red hand tinting.

Conclusion: Shiver is what an albino Octoling looks like
