The dust was still settling when Peter heard it. He whipped his head around in the direction he thought it was coming from and asked Karen to scan the collapsed building he was staring at. Peter heard it again and started running towards the rubble. 

“Signs of life detected, Peter,” Karen sounded sad. “But it’s a small being.”

Just as Peter had feared - a baby’s cries.

Is it slate? With the outside getting darker and darker, the warm air breezing in, the bracelet wrap looks like midnight remembering something it forgot at twilight. The clasp might as well be a mini solar flare in the dim of the spaceship's cockpit, and Tony tries and fails to recall the last time he bought something that wasn’t a self-indulgent binge that tends to accompany a close call and normally ends up with Peter muttering, “You shouldn't have.” Tony didn’t buy him this. The elevator dinged as it came to a stop, gently bouncing to settle before the doors slid open, revealing the penthouse. The floor to ceiling windows gave a spectacular view of New York and the muted navy hue of a light polluted sky. The penthouse itself was warmly lit by lamps dotted around the sunken living room, and smelled of cooked onions and garlic. 

Stepping further into the open space, Tony spotted Peter in the kitchen, his back to the rest of the space as he stirred something on the stove. Tony raked his eyes down the boy’s milky skin, admiring the contrast of the dark leather of Peter’s collar, and when his eyes dipped lower, smirking at the way the apron’s bow draped over his bare ass.

Peter had always liked the way pavement looked after a rainstorm. The way the street lights flicker in the tiny ponds that potholes make and the soft fairy-like glow of the moon on asphalt. There’s something magical about it that he’d never been able to place. It seems even more magical tonight for some reason. Five years without Tony, a gauntlet-burnt healing arm, and superhero burnout send Peter to MIT to get his degree. A late-night drive, a lookout point, and a rainstorm might just make it all worth it.
