Strawberry Flavored Blunts

The summer before college felt like a never ending dream. I am not sure if it was a good dream or a nightmare. “Smoke a blunt with me before you leave for college.” He said.

“Fernando I leave tomorrow.” I replied.

He insisted he would pick me up later that night, and I believed him. Mami insisted he is not actually going to come. Mami says he’s a flake. Mami says that those drugs made him a flake. She reminds me of how much of a good boy he was when he went to church. Mami remembers the Fernando that use to help with the sound at church, the Fernando that would go to bible study every Monday. I remember that Fernando too.

I remember the Fernando that use to do his hair just like his older brother. I remember the Fernando that would send heart emojis in every text message and buy Gerard Way Funk Pops for his ex-girlfriends. I remember the Fernando whose passion was the saxophone and music not the tingling feeling you get after smoking. I remember the Fernando that would say “Ya degala,” every time people called me crazy.

Fernando changed in every way possible, but he didn’t change in the ways that mattered.

That night, Fernando did pick me up. Mami hugged him and told him how much she loved him. Fernando told her he would take care of me. We drove to his house. That was the last time I drove through Eagle Pass at night. There were no cars and the only visible light were the barely working street lights.

We sat outside his house in lawn chairs. We took turns hitting the strawberry flavored blunt, which I secretly believed he picked because I’m girly and would’ve liked that. I can’t tell you when the fuzziness began to set in because I always feel fuzzy around Fernando. Fuzzy in the way that I felt safe. Safe in the way that I know Fernando would never do anything to hurt me.

“What do you think us in sixth grade and seventh grade would think of us right now?” I asked.

He laughed and said, “He would be so confused.”

I hope that Fernando remembers the Karyme that would wear dresses to church every Sunday. I hope he remembers Karyme that would sit next to him every opportunity she had. I hope he remembers the Karyme that would listen to every song he liked. I hope he remembers the Karyme that would always sing no matter how tone deaf she was.

When he dropped me off, he hugged me for what felt like an eternity. He told me to be safe at college and that he loved me.

I accidentally kept his sweater that night and I took it with me to college. That way I always remembered the Fernando that told Mami he would take care of me and so he’d always remember the Karyme he wanted to take care of.

In third grade I started wearing training bras

The white and pink cloth around my chest

The whispers from third grade boys when the sight of my nipples bled through my top

As I got older

V necks shirts became

An avoidable evil

Constant reminders from my mother

To cover my breast

Going online and hearing grown men

Tell me to slide off my shirt

To show them

Middle school boys

Never looking you in the eyes

Because of your chests natural movement

Teenage boys

Asking you to take off your shirt

And making causal comments

It has red cravings of the painful bra

I wear all day

They have stretch marks

Making beautiful waves

They are sensitive to touch

And don’t let me dress how i’d always like to

They are pale and pink

you say/ mami says

you say beauty is superficial

a hasty, exterior that we don’t need

but mami says beauty is pain

mami untangled my hair since i was six as tears traveled down my face

she reassured me that those tears were the price to pay for my beauty

you say body hair is beautiful and empowering

but my hair is thick and dark

mami says she wishes i hadn’t inherited papi’s hair

you say i’m beautiful the way i am

but mami says beauty is a form of survival

her deep burgundy lipstick and brown eyeshadow isn’t fun

it’s the way she’s respected

you say makeup should enhance

but all the bronzers tell me to make my nose smaller, make it more white

you say getting ready is so easy

but i spent significant amount of time that can make up years trying to make my hair straight

you say only i can see my flaws

but the wax lady sees them

and my tears pouring down my face as my mom’s friend fixes my eyebrows sees them

there shouldn’t be a point of connection between my eyebrows

like me

my point of connection will never be my mother country or mami’s mother country

here’s what we are NOT going to do

• make jokes because addiction is not funny

• speculate anything about his marriage or personal life

• attack those in his personal life (*ahem, leave anna alone. don’t go asking pete davidson for details. none of that)

addiction is a serious disease, and while this news may be troubling, i am so proud of him for seeking help. you can too.

Laura Dreyfuss may be know for her lead role as Zoe in the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen, Madison McCarthy on Glee and McAfee Westbrook on the Netflix series, The Politician, but she’s also working on her career as a solo music artist and we’re all here for it. Laura took the time to answer some of our questions about herself and her experiences. Check out what she had to say.

What inspires your sound?

I love making music I can dance to and I love writing things that are very specific to my experience.

He has such a good heart and we always keep each other laughing.

Can you describe your experience at the Golden Globes? Any favorite moments?

It was wild! It felt like such a celebratory night and I met so many people I admire. Getting to dance at the end of the night with my cast was so much fun.

From Glee to Dear Evan Hansen to The Politician, is there a specific moment that you consider the highlight of your career up to now?

Getting to work with such amazing artists is what is so mind blowing. I feel so fortunate to get to do what I love and work with people that inspire me so much.
