hello again ✵ I didn’t expect today’s spread to end up being this large, so we’re off of my traditional reading cloth today! I’ve missed doing readings and I hope to make this more regular. today’s message is pretty loaded, so get ready. I hope that you will find what you are looking for in these words, and remember, what you are looking for was already inside of you all along.

for today’s spread, we will be moving through the traditional tarot deck, then the Goddess cards, then the Elder Futhark runes, and then through the Illustrated Herbiary. there is no real spread to this; rather, it is one message that came to me for you. some of these I have identified, others are simply clarification. the primary message tends to come, I find, from the tarot deck.

card one, your current state: Eight of Swords, reversed ||| what a place to start. in its upright form, the Eight of Swords traditionally means that you have imprisoned yourself - or been imprisoned - by what seems an unending maze of problems. when reversed, this meaning is even greater. it seems like you may be feeling enclosed by guilt, or paralyzed by indecision. you will notice that the person on the card is blindfolded: they are unable to see anything, and they are bound by a cord, so they cannot rely on other senses to gain freedom. what is blocking you? what is stopping you? is there information that you feel like you do not know? are you trapping yourself, or is someone else trapping you? let’s move forward and see what else we can learn about this situation. 

card two, your obstacle/issue/roadblock: Nine of Pentacles ||| we know that pentacles appear when the issue relates to property, security, commerce, and other materials with which we manifest the surroundings of our lives. this card in particular has many meanings, yet in this case and in the context of card one... I’m wondering if you’re contending with willful ignorance on your own part. you feel lonely, and you feel like you have to face these problems by yourself... why? who made you feel that way? who caused you to believe that aloneness must mean loneliness? this is something that you can overcome, but it will take effort. interrogate why you have been closing yourself off from anyone who is unique or different. prosperity is on it’s way, but only if you learn to accept it.

card three, your outgoing/incoming energy: Ace of Cups, reversed ||| as these previous cards suggest, you’re facing roadblocks in terms of your energy. it seems as if you’ve had some unrealistic perceptions of the circumstances in which you find yourself. to break yourself out of this, strengthen your connection to your creative, emotional, and spiritual ties. be receptive to what’s surrounding you. the answers you need are all around you: in nature, in the people you know, and in yourself. just keep looking.

clarifiers (Tarot): Nine of Cups & King of Cups ||| from the Nine of Cups, I’m sensing again that you are ignoring the resources around you. you have people who love you, you have a future... you may not feel like it, but it’s there (and if you’re in a darker time, this is a great sign it’s coming for you). enjoy your life. a wise woman said to me not long ago: “be thankful you woke up today, because I am.” I’m thankful that you woke up, friend - we have this wonderful gift that is life. don’t block yourself in with what you saw in card one by believing that you are alone in it. from the King of Cups, we have yet another assurance that you are not alone in this world. this card suggests that you’re on the path to stability, if only you leverage the resources around you to create that stability. he sits in water because he is resting with the current, on an even surface: the waves affect him not. don’t let the waves affect you.

Butterfly Maiden, “Transformation” ||| the message on this card reads: “You are experiencing enormous change, which brings great blessings.” prosperity is coming for you, like we said earlier. accept the transformative power and allow yourself to cut the binds that imprison you. remember you are not alone.

Vesta, “Home” ||| the message on this card reads: “Your household situation is improving, either through a move or a healthy chance in the occupants.” things are shifting, which may be the source of those feelings of loneliness that you have. look at this new time of aloneness as an opportunity for inward seeking and growth. look to others for friendship and community. broaden your horizons! if you are in a busy living situation, this could perhaps suggest you need to work on constructing your own safe space to freely express your emotions and creativity - if improvement does not come naturally, create it yourself.

Hathor, “Receptivity” ||| the message on this card reads: “Allow yourself to receive. This will increase your intuition, energy, and ability to give to others.” what did we tell you, sunshine? receive that positive energy, seek equilibrium in the waves, and look outside of yourself (and always, always inside of yourself) for the answers you’re seeking. release those feelings of entrapment and take a deep breathe... you’re alive. this is your life. how do you want to live it? now go, and do just that.

Ansuz ||| this Elder Futhark rune traditionally denotes an incoming message, or a signal of health and wisdom to come. I believe that the truth will reveal itself to you soon - maybe once you learn to release those binds and remove your blindfold.

Jera ||| this rune suggests the realization of your goals and hard work! this tells me that if you are willing to put the work in to change your life, then you WILL get the results you’re seeking. no one person can tell you how this needs to be done - and in fact, no one should, but yourself. you control your life, and no one else must live it except for YOU.

Comfrey (herb), “What needs mending?” ||| the herb Comfrey invites you to seek what it is that is broken and in need of fixing. develop that solid foundation that the King of Cups told you about, and work on any perceptions you have that may be unrealistic, as the reversed Ace of Cups told you. a practice for letting go that I find I love very much includes setting a timer for ten minutes and taking a blank, unlined sheet of paper. write as much as you can about whatever it is that’s really grinding your gears, so to speak. what’s really getting to you? what makes you angry? what’s hurting you? write it all down. when you’re done, take that paper, and just absolutely destroy it. dunk it in water, SAFELY light it on fire, tear it to pieces, smash and crumple it - whatever you can or need to do, do it. when you’re done, mindfully dispose of that paper somewhere that is outside of your home (but don’t litter!).

Nettle (herb), “Pay attention!” ||| the Nettle asks you - no, orders you - to look around. the eye on the card is staring right at you and asking you to inquire about the context of your surroundings and self. the eye also asks you to see your surroundings for what they truly are. is someone hurting you that you have been ignoring? are you perhaps hurting someone, and ignoring that? have you wrongfully judged someone when you simply didn’t know them? remember those feelings of loneliness - others have that, too. the Illustrated Herbiary asks the reader to think of unique things about the people around them. distinguish the spirits of those around you. each soul is unique, including yourself. in accepting the differences of others, it becomes easier to accept diverse differences in ourselves. remember that.

sorry it’s been a while since I shared any content - things have been really hectic. in my time away, I made a rune deck & purchased the Herbiary deck. I put together a really quick, general reading - felt inspired and wanted to get this out with the energy I have!

from this reading, I’m gathering that you’ve been in a place of solitude (three of swords). maybe you have viewed this as a kind of relaxation period, but it might also have been you hiding from yourself that you’re hurting. kind of like putting yourself into willful ignorance of your own emotions. continuing on this path could land you in a position where you’re putting up barriers against others (queen of swords, reversed). it could be because someone has burst through your boundaries uninvited at some point, and they’ve left some kind of mark on you.

I believe that the overall mood of this reading is one of moving on from that hurt, and healing from what you’ve been going through (Kali, “endings & beginnings”). you’re protected by your spiritual guides in this healing process (algiz)! they’re not going to let you endure this by yourself. on this plane, look to your friends, family, and mentors. this time, you can have faith in your success (sowilo). it will work out.

Modern witchcraft is steeped in various traditions, and many of these traditions demand a specific set of altar tools. As witchcraft has also gained unfathomable popularity recently, various aesthetics of witchcraft have also arisen. Unfortunately, many young witches think that they NEED all of these pretty tools just to be a witch, or that their craft has to meet a specific standard of aesthetic to work.

As someone who has been practicing since long before witchcraft became popular among Millennials, I am here to tell you that that is simply not the case.

At its roots, witchcraft has always been simple and accessible to the common person. Even longstanding traditions have some kind of basis in folk magic. Long before silver-plated athames and golden chalices were mass produced for aspiring witches, our witch ancestors were using anything and everything they had available to them.

As I've talked about in previous posts, the only thing you really need to create magic is yourself. Everything else - all of the tools and crystals and gadgets - are mostly there to help you tap into your own natural power.

So, with that in mind, here are some ideas for cheap and accessible magical tools:

🍷 Wine glasses from the dollar store make perfect chalices

🎇 Some of the best wands begin as simple twigs on the ground

👕 Poppets and spell dolls can be made from literally anything, including paper, twigs, and even old T-shirts (I've even made a poppet from natural clay I found at the beach)

💎 Crystals occur naturally and can be found everywhere in nature, especially near beaches, rivers, and rock formations. They aren't any less powerful just because they aren't polished and glossed

🌱 Research native plants in your region and figure out their metaphysical properties. Use these as substitutes for mainstream herbs

🌙 Moon water literally has more properties and uses than I can count, so fill up a jar with some water and leave it out overnight on a full moon

🧂 When all else fails, salt and salt water are some of the most ancient and powerful cleansing agents and are perfect to add in ritual baths

🛌 Almost every single altar cloth I've ever owned has been a $5 black bed sheet from Walmart

🌹If you can't afford a fancy oil from a shop, make your own! You'll be able to tailor it more precisely to your intention, and you'll be left with way more than you could get at a shop. I've created an in depth tutorial for making your own oils, which you can find here

🍯 Offerings do not have to be expensive. Some of the most traditional offerings include water, milk, and honey

🐦 I can't even tell you how many feathers I've found on the ground while I'm out and about in the world. Just make sure you disinfect them before use!

🛣 Crossroads dirt is one of the most powerful binding agents known to man, and it's completely free

✍ Sigilcraft is one of the most powerful types of magic and other than the cost of a paper and pen, it is completely free. I've created an in-dept tutorial which you can find here

🧨 Color magic is your friend. Colored candles from the dollar store are your friend. Birthday candles are still candles. Tealight candles from Walmart are still candles.

👟 Get familiar with knot magic for quick and simple spells. If you can't find yarn or a piece of thread, shoe laces will work perfectly in a pinch

🍽 If you can't obtain a candle holder for a taper candle, worry not! Light the taper candle and drip about 10 drops of melted wax onto the center of a plate. Then quickly press the base of the candle into the melted wax and hold it there firmly for about 30 seconds. Boom! You now have a stable taper candle that isn't going anywhere (as long as you don't bump it)

🥫 A jar is a jar. If you use a lot of jars in your craft, start washing and saving your spaghetti sauce jars. Pro tip: If you're into color magic, use old alfredo sauce jars for purity (that is a joke)

🥕 Most of the common magical herbs can be found for a dollar in the spice aisle at the grocery store

☕ You can literally cast a spell just by stirring your morning tea or coffee. Clockwise to attract something into your life. Counter clockwise to banish something from your life.

So, yeah! Get crafty, and have fun with it. Try to change your perspective on objects you use everyday, and pretty soon, you'll see the magical potential in everything around you.

card one, your current state: Page of Swords, reversed ||| maybe you have been listening a little too much to the negative voices around you, or maybe you have been a negative voice yourself. when reversed, this card is a sign to me that there is some sort of spiritual/emotional/mental unrest. it is my view that you have a long way to go to work through what it is that is in your mind at the moment.

card two, your obstacle/issue/roadblock: Three of Swords ||| look at the card... what’s been piercing your innermost soul? think about it: we know from our first card that you’ve been going through something that has prompted you to absorb negativity or charge it back into the universe. what is it that is causing this? I can’t answer that for you definitively; however, I can say that it is apparent to me that you are confronting something painful, and ignoring the truth of it. the rainclouds in the background, the swords piercing from all sides: this has been a bad one, and I want you to know that there is hope. as cliché as it may sound, after every rainstorm... there really is some kind of sunshine. don’t give up hope or be afraid by the intensity of this card. chances are, you have BEEN dealing with this, and ignoring it.

card three, your outcome/incoming energy: Five of Wands, reversed ||| how validating! I wish I could speak with you myself so that we could address how wonderfully this strings together... this card is telling us that you have been - as we stated under card two - dealing with this issue, and neglecting it. the great news is that the message of hope associated with card two apply here, and are confirmed. you are exiting a situation that has been trying for you: you’re entering into a phase of life where things are going to be relaxed. goodness will certainly come. this card carries a distinct message of orderliness from disarray.

your Goddess Guidance clarification card: Maeve, “cycles & rhythms” ||| what a perfect way to close this off. some little things about me to begin ~

my study of tarot and runes began in early 2015. at that point, I was only reading and consuming information, but not practicing. my familiarity with anything of the sort extended only to working with pendulums (which I learned from my mother) and prayer. I had fallen away from traditional religion years prior to this, and I stood in a gray area. I knew I believed in something, and I knew that whatever it was, it was the sum of the universe.

for whatever reason, I felt drawn to practicing with something physical in my hands. tarot and runes appealed to this urge. I studied traditional tarot decks and researched heavily before making my first deck purchase in August 2018. I have been regularly reading tarot since. recently, I have expanded to oracle decks. I hope to continue boosting my knowledge to bring you - whoever you are - fresh content & valuable insights.

before I began researching or reading, I worked with divination and spirituality in large & small ways for almost as long as I can remember. little promises and assurances to myself, moments where advice for others came from a place that I did not feel I controlled. you will know the feeling, if you’re here and reading this. I have always felt that if there was a veil, it was thin -- even thinner than we realize in our day-to-day lives. 

until now, I have only given readings to friends and family. recently, I’ve realized that I am ready to move this work to a public setting. hopefully, this will evolve into a place where you can come for guidance and answers. check the upcoming posts area below for what to look forward to from me!
