i can't believe i never posted Bookworm, my friend Bookworm! can you tell i love obscure rogues?

Ian King was a professional storyteller whose small program was suddenly shut down due to embezzlement, and their unemployment withheld due to legal red tape. The other members of the troupe looked to Ian for help, which led him to organize a break-in to get everyone their due pay. Once Ian realized how "easy" it was to get away with crime, however -- and with no other immediate job prospects -- he took up the Bookworm title and began a series of Robin-hood style crimes, using thievery to fund intuitions and forcibly restructure public education / welfare programs. At the same time, Ian was also writing his own series of children's mystery novels, a-la Sherlock Holmes. But to spice up his plots, he included details of his real-life crimes, which eventually led to him being tracked down and arrested by Batman. Due to the nature of his crimes, as well the results of his physical and mental evaluation, Ian was deemed guilty and sentenced to Arkham Asylum.

this is Dr. Callum Copus, formerly known as the psychic supervillain Mastermind.

he suffers from Alien Hand Syndrome, and possesses the rare but somewhat frowned upon ability Mind Control; his gimmick, meanwhile, revolved around toys & games

Dr. Copus has since turned over a new leaf... mostly, and has become a resident psychiatrist at the Motherlobe

the hand is still evil, though.

i've always been interested in how disabilities function in any universe with "powers", so this is just a little artistic exercise

Jonathan Crane murdered his thieving co-worker for trying to take credit for his work-- but not before inhaling a good amount of the fear toxin that killed him. As he disposed of the man in a drug-induced haze, Jonathan would take a good look at himself... and find something else staring back.

Noah Kuttler was one of Barbara Gordon's closest friends throughout her middle and high school years. A fandom geek and an excellent hacker, he developed a tool that would help him determine the physical statistics of real-life superheroes. This information was then printed into zines, which he shared with his fellow fanboy for record-keeping purposes. This passion turned to obsession, however, as his peers regularly doubted, criticized, and even stole from his work. Trying to keep his project afloat, Kuttler began to put himself in harm's way by stepping into hero fights, desperate to put something substantial on them to print. Eventually, collateral damage from an encounter with Superman left Kuttler grievously injured, requiring the removal of both his left arm and his voice box to save his life. Rather than acknowledge the limitations of his idols -- or even his own shortcomings -- Kuttler became antagonistic and bitter towards the very concept of heroes, an attitude aggravated by the delusions and loss he suffered after the accident. After a brief period of freelance work, Kuttler now works for the Penguin under the pseudonym "Calculator", remotely providing villains with vital information on how to take out down the caped crusader and any number of his so-called friends.

do you have any art advice for beginner artists?

thank you for reaching out! i really do appreciate that you'd ask me this. i'll do my best to provide a brief but comprehensive answer.

i'd also like to preface this by saying that i am a disabled, self-taught artist without any formal training, so any advice i give will be through the lens of that experience

make art out of passion. this is the most important piece of advice i can give. if you are making art with the purpose of satisfying an invisible audience, or with the vague goal of "fame" or "success", you may never truly enjoy what you do. it may sound selfish, but i believe in making art because you like to and because you want to, not for the enjoyment of others.

don't be afraid of making "bad" art. "bad" is subjective; my favorite pieces are those that look "unfinished" or "unprofessional". but most people tend to think their art is "bad" when they cannot execute a concept, or when the result does not match the one in their head. i cannot promise you that art will always be easy; in fact, it can and will be extremely frustrating at times. but it will always be rewarding to have tried to work with new concepts, even if for the purpose of learning to better apply them in the future.

use references and tutorials as-needed. a lot of beginner artists feel like this is cheating, but i can assure you that even the most professional of artists use and have used references or tutorials to get where they are now. if you're unsure of where to start, i have a whole pinterest board with these things that i update fairly regularly.

there is so much more i can say, but then this post would go on forever. i hope this is helpful, and if not, my ask box is always open.
