The confession scene in Pentiment where you can eavesdrop on the whole town’s “sins” because they’re literally just standing in the same room a few feet away and each confession just lasts a minute is the only accurate catholic confession service representation I’ve ever seen in fiction
#movies and tv always make the priest the protagonist’s bestie and he’s their troubled meow meow and the confession booth is dark and sexy#and the protagonist spills their entire life story#lol but it is not that cool#like I guess you CAN contact the priest personally and set up an individual appointment#but who does that?

#idk as someone who grew up going to confession regularly#it was never like the movies#I mean I never had to confess that I was like a murderer but for a good cause or something because I battled actual demons or whatever#but really yeah idk it’s just. a very rote#dry thing#usually you don’t even get one of those cool booths#you just stand in an aisle or maybe in a weird little room and the priest can see you#and you’re just like. shit what are the words. ok right uhhh forgive me father for I have sinned it’s been about uhhh 6 months#like it’s a dentist appointment#and then you’re like ummm let’s see do I have any sins??? I probably lied at some point. I didn’t clean my room. I was mean to my siblings.#and he’s like ok. do better at those things. listen to your mother. I absolve you in the name of Christ. 10 hail marys.#and then you leave#you never get to rant or expand. there are people behind you waiting in line!!#a lot of people just take like 30 seconds so there is pressure to not take forever lol#and it would be crazy if someone took longer than 10 minutes#I’d say most people’s are under 2 in my experience

#prev yeah it does depend#it takes effort so generally my mental images are very impressionistic and vague#but I CAN picture things with photo realism if I try#especially if you ask me to picture something very specific like an actual person or place I’ve known#CHOOSING specifics for a vague description like just ‘a tall hill’ or ‘a dark haired man’ etc#I’m not good at that so then it would be pretty vague in my mind still#actually I’m thinking generally the images are pretty vague and vibey#I understand the person in the notes who says they feel a sensation / action more than see a picture#I think I’m that way too. when I read a book it’s more like being in a play than watching a movie
