I don’t understand why people who cannot accept any moral grayness or complexity decide to join fandoms for the most emotionally complex stories and then try to shame everyone there who actually is able to understand the material.

me when somebody writes JayDick "bonding over trauma":
Tumblr media
Please stop drawing step siblings in romantic relationships together PLEASE. I get they're not blood related, but as someone who has step siblings I think it's just weird. They both consider Bruce their dad, and while Dick is the only one technically adopted he is over 5 years older than Jason and has known him since Jason was young. And it's not vent art or you coping with trauma because you guys are ROMANTICISING them together and creating fluffy fanfics and fanart of them.
Since everyone's cracking a hissy fit, this doesn't extend to versions of the characters that have been adapted as just friends. If you're basing it on a particular comic where they don't interact at all, it's fine. But when you actively use versions of those characters that you know have a very platonic, brotherly dynamic, you are being weird 🫵🏻
Also, tag your art appropriately! Sometimes you guys draw shipart that I can't even tell is platonic or not and have had to privately ask if they're platonic or romantically shipping those characters together. You might understand it as either way, but as someone who is actively trying to block as many proshippers on this platform as possible it's important for me and others to understand what the relationship dynamic is that you're trying to convey
Please stop dude, find a new hobby. 💔
Take care 🌸
Now why the helly did I see a "brujay" tag....

love the library. there's no risk. you can take out a book and go "wow this sucks" and just give it back. and when you do that you're still making the library's Number Go Up so you'll be able to roll the dice on even more books. all for the low low price of free/you already paid for it with your tax money so you might as well use it

When you talk about why someone might want engagement with their fics, I do think there is one crucial reason you always overlook.
Sometimes the reason is not a bid for popularity or reassurance or even community, but for me at least if I am writing a fic, it is because I am passionate about the show and the characters and I tend to approach my fics as a way to sink my teeth into what makes the characters tick, how they might act like in different circumstances and so on. Therefore I post because I want to geek out with others about it. For that same reason, I cannot shut up in other writers' comment boxes if their story resonates with me.
I agree with you that community makes fandom infinitely more fun and rewarding but the rush of happiness at getting a (multi sentence) comment to me is not unlike when you say strike a conversation with a stranger in a museum in front of your favourite painting or finding out that a friend or an acquaintance shares a hobby or a passion for a dear book or movie with you, after which you jump into a fevered and lengthy discussion.
It is also for this reason that fandoms where I have gone to the trouble of building community in the first place are those where people generally want to tell interesting stories and to talk about them and have interesting things to say. Sometimes that's three fandom friends leaving wall of text comments on one another's fics (that no one else cares about), and sometimes it's a larger more diffuse group of strangers leaving short comments that say "I screeched with delight reading what Character A said" - but it always is a place where people are not afraid to share their enthusiasm and joy and passion about the stories told and the act of story telling itself.
That's an excellent point, anon. I think I'm mentally including that concept under the umbrella of community but it's a fair point that I should really break it out when I'm describing the concept.
It's one of the aspects of fandom that I really enjoy as well. Having a space where people feel comfortable being enthusiastic is a core component of community to me, but that doesn't necessarily mean that a "community" forms.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It's an excellent reminder and food for people to think about.

Hi, sorry to pop in here like this but I wanted to ask something, as long as I've used ao3 (very long time) meta/head cannon/edits/graphics and other fandom related things besides fanfics have always been allowed on ao3. Well recently I keep seeing people say that this is no longer true? One person said that it was a change in the last update of the guidelines, but I don't remember reading anything like that. Someone else said that they went and reported someone else even though their thing was fandom related. I wanted to ask because I went and looked through the guidelines again but I still didn't see anything like this; and I wanted to ask if I missed something somewhere or if this is just one of those instances of people having their opinions of what does and doesn't belong on the archive?
Thank you for your time, hope you're having a lovely day!
All of the things that you listed in this ask are allowed on AO3. That hasn't changed, and you can read it directly from PAC in this News post from May.
I know there have been some malicious bots trolling AO3, so perhaps the rumours started through that? They were leaving guest comments on fics warning authors of basically what you just said. That something had changed and those types of works were no longer allowed and that the author should proactively delete it instead of waiting to get reported.
That was a lie, and I have no idea what kind of person would do that, but I hope they need to wake up at 2am to pee and someone left the seat up.
There are plenty of things that aren't allowed on the Archive, from requests for a fic to ads for roleplay partners to fics that only say "I'm going to write a fic about this! Stay tuned!" but don't contain an actual story yet.
Metas, headcanons, edits, graphics, podfics, AMVs, fan crafts... Those are all welcome.
Anyone who falsely reports something will be told by PAC that it's a false report. If they continue to falsely report after being repeatedly told not to, they could eventually find themselves suspended (unable to post).
If the report is false, the creator will never know their work was reported and nothing will happen to their account.

i like the phrases "it's not for me," "it's not my thing," and "i'm not the target audience" because they're the most concise way to express "this thing that you enjoy has merits but idgaf about it" without being aggressive
