after how they handled it in V9, 'boba' restored my faith in how they're handling ruby's arc and especially her friends response to it. yang acknowledging the role she played in ruby not feeling like she could talk to them, that she wasn't really there for ruby in a way that ruby needed her to, making it clear that she is there for her now and that there's no going back to the team rwby that was, ruby acknowledging that she still doesn't really know how to ask for help, the code word...
it's all good stuff. very similar to the discussion yang and weiss had in V5, which is a good thing ✌

anyway i think this is going to live in my head rent-free for a while. i kinda first thought it's probably just, ya know, ruby since she's narrating the whole thing and she'd have to know somehow, but... why leave it like that then? who is back, coming from a same kind of portal that the blacksmith made for team rwby + jaune to return to remnant?
is it someone from remnant? but how would somewhat then recognize them if it's not anyone from team rwby + jaune? who is creating portals like if it's not the blacksmith???
so many questions. prime material for off-the-wall theories, too 👀

i love the little xiao long-rose family tidbit about tai, yang, and ruby going to a boba shop after school once a month (that then became a twice a week thing bc frankly, if ruby's reaction to it is anything to go off of, tai's a pushover and couldn't say 'no'.) that now that yang and ruby are in one their dad's absence is noticeable enough for yang to bring up, like.
it was their thing. and now he's not there when all of vale and seemingly even patch has evacuated and it's askfhksjdgghkjadfgh
this family will be the death of me 😭

Okay but, a thought: What if the Grimm Arm hasn't visibly spread all that much, but that's just because it's spreading UNDER her skin and taking root inside her bone?
So like, the eyepatch ends up getting destroyed in a fight, and suddenly there's now a minature Seer Grimm inside her once-empty socket, as the Grimm Arm is now INSIDE of Cinder's body so as to more efficiently feast on her.
i mean i wouldn't be surprised if it was spreading more under her skin—though based on the hound and even salem i'm unsure if grimm care about bones that much to go that far lol—, the man inside the hound did have grimm goop leaking from his left eye and ear and that has to come from somewhere. it really comes down to how much the grimm can "regrow" and if there's anything what's left (or isn't left) of cinder's eye to stick its roots in, if that makes sense?
i wouldn't be opposed of course. while i am here saying the grimm arm's gotta go, i'm also saying that it should grow some more before that happens. particularly the tiny spikes on her shoulder. as a treat. for me lol
seer eye would be pretty cool tho. just the idea that it's not just an eye, but maybe even eye that cinder herself can't see through but someone else can is tasty for storytelling and the Implication™.

as much as i like cinder's grimm arm design-wise and conceptually, there's just. it's gotta go. spinning it into a majorly positive thing is nigh impossible, the negatives are just so overwhelming especially when cinder's desire for freedom is taken into account (which it obviously should lol)
cinder can't protect it with her own aura, yet she still feels the pain from it. she's weak to silver eyes, which she normally wouldn't be. it keeps spreading, destroying her body as it goes. salem can use it to torture her; they directly parallel this with the shock collar cinder was forced to wear at the glass unicorn.
cinder wants to be free, but the arm is a tool of control. cinder wants to be strong and powerful, but the arm gives her a weakness she can't eliminate without getting rid of it—something that isn't an easy task, as if it's just cut off, it regrows.
if the goal is for cinder to be truly free—to fix the mistakes of the past, to fix the broken heart the grimm beetle 'branded' on her back—, the grimm arm has to go.

the more ruby learns to control her powers, the less effect it seems to have on cinder.
at beacon, ruby's reaction was purely emotional and the blast reflected that. it was powerful, so much so that cinder, presumably affected thanks to the grimm beetle, nearly died and a year later the wyvern is still petrified (in contrast, the leviathan broke free from a controlled, non-emotional blast almost immediately). on top of that, ruby fell unconscious herself as well as a result.
at haven, the blast is once again more emotional with ruby reacting to a scene that reminded her of beacon, and while it's cut short by emerald, it's still enough for cinder to fall on her knees in pain.
in atlas, however, ruby has learned to control her powers, and while she does struggle to activate them when there's no one to protect, no full activation happens on pure emotion alone; all of it is fully intended.
and as a result, cinder manages to escape during a blast, still grasping her grimm arm but otherwise unharmed.
"if ruby rose has learned to harness her gift, then you must take care to protect yours." <- protect from what exactly, because it's looking to me that the more ruby learns to harness her gift, the safer cinder is; the grimm arm itself, less so.

CRWBY reassuring us that negotiations and talks have been going well and that they are in the process of finding a new home for RWBY makes me so happy. I think what makes me even happier was when talking about it on the stream they implied that it wouldn't be just a volume 10 thing and that there's a possibility for the show to go on past V10. Like they just sounded so positive about the whole thing and it makes me so happy to see that RWBY isn't going anywhere and that this story will continue.

one thing i rarely see mentioned about the lost fable—because the focus is often on the later discussion—is that ozma was already troubled over the wars that were waged over their religion:
ozma: are we sure this is right?
salem: you said we needed to bring humanity together. in order to do that, we have to spread our word, and destroy those who will deny it.
and it's that last part that gets a visible reaction from ozma, that prompts the man he reincarnated to question "what are we doing?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and this is ozma we're talking about: the legendary hero, a warrior who fought only for righteousness, who had been ready to give his life for justice countless times.
"kill all non-believers" would have never sat right with him, and it's this moment that's really the beginning of the end for ozma and salem.

i definitely did not download the rt app so i could watch / listen to the stream while in bed bc it aired at 11pm and it takes over an hour for me to fall asleep anyway (if i'm lucky), only to fall asleep in record time and wake up at 1am and then take 1-2 hours to fall asleep again. no sir.
. . . at least there was some good news.

summer falling into a grimm pool and getting the same treatment as salem rather than cinder / the hound really speaks to me. here's a huntress with silver eyes straight from legends. she looks a bit more grimm now. the same power that protected her from the destructive effects of the pool is now useless to her as it hurts her as much as it hurts the grimm.
how much would that change her? to potentially work her whole life towards a single goal to be a huntress, to be a hero, only to look like the monsters she trained to hunt and kill? how much did she value the power she holds; was she like maria where her eyes were only one part of her repertoire, or did she built her entire identity around them and the legends that spoke of them? what was the burden she carried, and did falling into a grimm pool make it impossible to carry?
summer rose. the huntress. the silver-eyed warrior. the best of them all. the super-mom. the hero.
and she failed.
but did she really, or did becoming something akin to a grimm make it seem like she did in her own mind, that she couldn't be that person everyone thought her to be anymore?

i keep thinking back to the hound and how his arm had nothing but bone left under the grimm and the way the scene cut to cinder picking up the rubble with her grimm arm and the way it has spread further and further, the skin underneath is Red and Not Doing So Good, Chief
oh it burns like hunger all right
yeah cinder's thing is hunger but have you ever thought that her grimm arm might be hungry too???
