Hey, my name is David. I'm a student doing P.R. at the University of Westminster. This blog is here to show you what the university is all about and to give new potential students some insight into the place they could be studying. I will be focusing, not only on the academics and sports but the social side of the university and the city as a whole.

The University of Westminster Students' Union (UWSU) helps to shift students from having a good time at Westminster to having a great time. That may sound cheesy but in reality what makes or breaks your time at university is often the relationships you form with those around you...
The UWSU has over a hundred different societies ranging from the Pokémon Society to the International Development Society and so there should be something which grips you or which you're curious to check out. In addition to that don't forget that we also host over thirty sports teams ranging from the conventional (Rugby, football, netball) through to martial arts (Muay Thai Kick-boxing and many others) and loads more... We also organise student nights out to clubs and trips to places like Amsterdam, Dublin and Spain. Additionally there's loads of unique opportunities to get stuck in with the media side of the Students' Union designing posters, taking photos, writing articles for a magazine, hosting a radio show or even helping out at the TV station (Smoke TV - http://www.youtube.com/user/westminstersmoketv).
Now underlying all of this stuff is the opportunity to meet a bunch of different students and quality time getting to know them. Personally I've benefited from my involvement with the Christian Union and the Dragons RFC (University Rugby Club) and my experience of University life has been driven and transformed by the mates I've made there.
Another really important feature of the UWSU is the welfare and advice that we provide. If you ever run into problems when you're studying then we're here to support you and employ professional welfare advisers to guide you. Financial, educational or relational whatever the issue is if we can't help you then we will almost certainly know someone who can.
Finally, I should have mentioned this first really, the UWSU provides a voice for all the students to use. Representatives are annually elected to campaign and work towards not only improving the quality of education the university provides but also the quality of the Students' Union itself.
The Students' Union is really what makes Westminster more than just a place to pick up a degree on the way to getting a job. It gives you the chance to really enjoy your time at university and to make the most of your time in London.

Students have just finished the first semester at the University of Westminster studying Commercial Music Performance and at the moment about to start the second semester.
So far they have only positive feedback about the course,
''the lecturers are all extremely good and all have an array of highly interesting backgrounds in the music business and so therefore can offer reliable, sound and honest advice when needed along with also being very helpful when it comes to general queries regarding their subject. All of the equipment provided is top notch, being a drummer I am use to poorly kitted out rehearsal rooms with terrible drum kits and an overall awful sound, but all of the drum kits here are brilliant condition, good spec's and are kept in good condition too along with decent cymbals also. The rooms are all equipped with apple computers with all the relevant software along with a range of amplifiers and again a decent PA system, so it makes making music that much easier and more enjoyable when you know have all of this at your fingertips all day long.''

Uni is paradise and the heart of darkness all at once. Freedom is the initial allure, responsibility is the harsh reality. Rhetoric aside however, university is no doubt one of the best things that ever happened to me, socially and educationally. Personally, I've made the best friends I've ever had, and knowing it will one day come to an end is extremely difficult to come to terms with. I don’t know how many people from back home I've tried to convince to do university, purely because I know the benefits of the experience would be as endless as they were for me.

THE RUGBY TEAM
Why should you join the rugby team? Well, currently the University of Westminster rugby team is going from strength to strength. Having won our league last year, we are currently top of our new division and are in a very strong position.
When I joined last September we have a very small squad but it was a great atmosphere and we all wanted the same things; to enjoy our rugby, have a great social side to the team but ultimately to win.
Over the past 14 months I can safely say we have achieved and are trying to keep maintaining all three goals. Zoo Bar is our usual night out after games on a Wednesday, and is a great laugh, helping to bring us all closer together as a unit.
This year we got another great bunch of freshers- we are always open to new players, whatever standard you are. It may take up time and be an effort dragging yourself to training but it is more than worth it, trust me!

The university provides a platform unlike education systems beneath it. It allows like-minded students, lecturers, practitioners and enthusiasts to part take in similar goals and interests. Westminster encourages creativity on a whole new level and provides a hub for future networking for the students' chosen fields.

THE CHEERLEADERS
The Westminster Dragons Cheerleaders is a great team to be apart of, with weekly socials and a co-ed team we have a lot of fun! Cheerleading is an exciting sport to be apart of and something new to try. Most people on the team have never done it before, but enjoy it so much that they want to continue after graduating so it's definitely worth a try, no matter who you are. If you are looking to learn something new whilst at university and make a great bunch of friends you will have for a lifetime then join the cheerios!

THE NETBALL TEAM
Before I came to university I’d always heard people say things like “Join a society! It’ll make university much more fun!”
However, as I am intensely lazy I had always planned to ignore this advice and wallow in my room on the internet during all my spare time. Therefore it was much to my chagrin that, during the Fresher’s Fair, I was pounced upon by a coach and the next thing I knew I was somehow on a netball court, and much to my surprise it wasn't long before I was going to every training session.
And now, as cliché as it is, I couldn't really imagine university without it. We train twice a week, with a match most Wednesdays, and the fact that the team is together so often means we've become amazing friends. It gives you relationships outside that of your course and your flat. The competitive atmosphere around the games brings you together in either joy or disappointment and it’s strangely unique in terms of friendships. We train hard, and we want to do well, but we always have fun while we do it. (Even if we are forced to do torturous amounts of squats...)
But it's not just our own team; the sports are generally pretty integrated and 'know' each other to a certain extent, which means that sports-related nights out are always amazing; especially the Tour, where we go to Spain for a week. It’s pretty insane!
I’d be so bored without netball, both the training and the social side of it, and I don’t really know what I’d do without the friends I've made because of it. I'd probably sit around whining about being stuck in the house all the time.

At University of Westminster, when it comes to going out there's always something to do- and I think a major asset of being here is that it's in the center of London- so there are people from all over the world there. You never really feel like you're an outsider- and transportation is easy and reliable. People there are generally very friendly.

Already know what you will need?
During my first year, I lived on the Harrow Campus, which is where the P.R. course is taught. Staying in the Halls of Residence for your first year is a great opportunity to engage with people and get to know your surroundings in a different way then if you were to stay off campus.
I especially like Harrow Campus for the art that it has- as most of the Media and Art degrees take part here. As well as this, it only takes 15 minutes to get here with the tube from Baker Street. With the new renovations almost completed, the campus looks fantastic! However if your course is not at Harrow, here are a few tips to ensure your have the best experience possible.
Westminster provides you with six different halls of residence around London, four located in Central, one based in Harrow (north-west London) and the newest one is located in Wembley. All of the campuses are strategically positioned to give you the easiest access to your campus.
How to apply?
If you are wondering how to apply for a place in the Halls for next year it's really simple! There are available rooms for full time undergraduates and postgraduate students.
Full details of who are applicable for a space and how to apply can be found on the 'applying for Halls' page on the Westminster website. If you have any questions or any need help with your Halls application, please get in touch with us.
What tenancy contracts are available?
If you’re an undergraduate student, the tenancy contract runs for 36 weeks (until the end of the teaching year, in early summer). Check the University calendar for this year's term dates.
If you’re a postgraduate student, you can choose between a 36-week or 51-week tenancy contract.
If you’re coming here from abroad or you're an exchange student, you can apply for a semester-only tenancy contract. For more details, please contact the Education Abroad Office.
Are bills included in the rent?
The cost of all bills and utilities are included in the rent (as well as high-speed broadband.)
Basic possessions insurance is also included in the rent, and is provided by Endsleigh. The insurance covers basic items such as PCs and laptops in your room.
Please visit the Endsleigh website to see what is covered in the insurance and to add any additional items to your insurance.
What kinds of room are available?
There is a large selection of rooms available depending on where your campus is situated. There is everything from single rooms with shared bathrooms to your own en suite penthouse studio room.
A limited number of twin and double rooms are also available– please check the individual halls page for more details.
What is included in the rooms?
A range of items and furnishings are provided, however you will need to provide some of your own items. Have a look at our Halls FAQs page for more details of what’s included in halls.
Essential items (including bedding, cutlery and crockery packs) can all be bought from The Gailarde website. Gailarde is a company that provides competitively priced packs of accessories tailored to the needs of students. As a University of Westminster Student, you can get a 10% discount by entering the discount code WEST011 at the checkout. Your ordered items will be delivered to your halls and will be there already for you when you arrive.
