Hybrid Note Taking Style
A note taking method that blends the best of paper and digital note taking that I’ve been exploring lately. So far it’s working really well for me :) Hope it helps!
Hybrid Note Taking Method
Problems with other note taking systems
Each note taking system has its pros and cons. Here are some of the problems I found with (fully) paper and (fully) digital note taking systems.
Paper
Can’t use the search function on your notes.
Can’t add images and other types of digital files easily.
Difficult to keep overview between notebooks.
Can’t share these as easily as digital notes.
Digital
Not as ‘romantic’.
Sometimes less engaging.
Lack of physical presence can lead to you forgetting about it.
Can be more difficult to do things like sketching, making schemes, making illustrations etc.
Benefits of Hybrid
I like using hybrid methods because they bring you the best of both worlds.
Easily searchable.
Information in your notes is traceable.
Makes it easier to find and carry out actions e.g. finding extra info.
Doesn’t damage books.
Allows you to embed different types of files.
What you’ll need
Source material (e.g. book, academic paper)
Any kind of notebook :)
Digital note-taking app → I like Notion (it’s free).
Step 1 - Read & number the material
As you go, use a pencil to lightly put numbers into the margins whenever you deem something worthy of noting down or remembering. This will help you locate the source of specific parts of your notes later.
Step 2 - Write Q&A-style notes
Write the information down in question-and-answer style. Come up with useful questions that link to the material you want to remember (e.g. Q → What is the main problem with using platform-based planning for new ventures? A → Assumptions underlying the plan are used as fact rather than best-guess estimates to be tested and questioned). Use the numbers you placed in the margin of the pages to specify the source of the information you used for each answer.
Example → Chapter 1 page 27 note 3 becomes 1.p27.3
Step 3 - Write actions as you go (Supporting notes)
Supporting notes
Write down your thoughts, anything you’re curious about, things you want to look up, things you’re confused about, actions you’ve been inspired to do, etc. For example → ?m Maybe I can apply this to my visualization assignment? / ! Look up what 'plurality of the future’ is / fex Organizational transformation through design. I find this a great way to support and manage the learning process.
Action key
Keep a small action key in which you have an overview of what your action marks mean (e.g. ?m→ questions to myself, f → find, fex → find example, ?? → I don’t get it, ! → general actions)
Don’t be afraid to customize your actions!
What you’ll get
Actionable notes
Your paper notes will contain a structured and easy to read overview of actionable items that came up during the reading. This can be questions you need answered, reminders to find specific information, etc. This will make them a lot harder to forget to do!
Easily traceable sources
With the codes you’ll be able to tell easily and quickly where the information you’ve written in your notes came from.
Searchable & review-ready notes
Notes will be (mostly) made in question-and-answer style. This will allow you to easily review using active recall. All you need to do is cover/hide the answer and you can check how well you truly know the material.
Thanks for reading!

I have reading I should be doing right now, but I wanted to take a moment to at least put this post in my drafts. I'll come back to it later, but right now I am enjoying this moment and the weather and reflecting on a lot of things. My mind is busy but I think healthy. My struggles are not overtaking me and I am dealing with them. I just want to make this post as a reminder to myself that days like this are possible. Maybe the circumstances or feelings you're facing aren't always great, but that doesn't mean that goodness and grace and kindness and growth don't exist. God is good. He gives grace and good days and kind people and changes your heart for the better. Hold on to the moments when you can catch a glimpse of that.

(oops I put this in drafts instead of posting it... it's a month later lol)
29 November 2021
Another month has come and gone, and I am so ready for this semester to be over! I have three more days of classes, three papers to write, and a final exam to take in the next week and a half.
I'm currently trying to come up with a good arguable claim about Faulkner's As I Lay Dying, but I'm having a really difficult time. I think I'm going to talk about how all of the characters are insane except Darl, or that Darl is the only one of the Bundren's who is acting with honor in the novel. He is the only one with pure, honorable intentions. I think I could make a stronger case for the second one, but I'm going to spend most of my day today gathering sources and evidence.
It's cold here, my toes go numb as I walk to and from my classes. I enjoy thawing in the library. I sit next to my boyfriend and he writes code as I flip through the pages of the novel and scour the internet for good articles. We're an interesting pair. I like it that way.
Next semester should be good. I hope it is. I'm taking a couple of classes with professors that I already really like, and all of my classes will be taught in English which is nice. I don't think I'll struggle as much. I am taking four English classes though, so it will be a lot of reading and writing. But that's what I like doing. I'm registered for 15 hours, but I may drop one and go down to 12 and get a job next semester. I've thought about moving out next year and if that's the case, I need to start saving up again ASAP. I haven't had a steady job since summer. We'll see what happens. I'm definitely getting another job this summer, and one that pays better than my last one. Maybe at Target, maybe at a daycare center close to my house, maybe in a bookstore or tea shop.
I can't wait for break. I'm going to play video games and watch movies and knit and take naps and read so many books and do puzzles and drink tea and it is going to be wonderful.

getting things done method
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi, it’s werelivingarts again! One another method beside Pomodoro and Eat the Frog that you can use to organize your time is Getting Things Done.
When there are so many tasks bouncing around mind, it’s difficult to focus and complete them. Therefore, to do this, the first step is to write down all the tasks you need to do. Then, divide the tasks in smaller actions and organize them on your timetable! Hope that you find this useful! 💙💜❤️💻🥛🍫

That’s a wrap on another period, and basically 3 months at my parents’ house. Gone will be the white desk and the pretty window view lol. Although I’ll miss their presence, and never having to cook dinner or eat it alone, I’m looking forward to get back into a productive routine on my own!

dress up just to study, chew on the caps of your highlighters while you scribble notes in the margins of your books, put your feet up on your desk and drink cinnamon tea with too much sugar, learn calligraphy and write your favorite quotes on pages of old books and tape them to your wall, drink wine and read in the bath and use that bathbomb you keep forgetting is in your cabinet, play your favorite music play classical music play music from the 20s and dance down your hallway just because, call your friends and read aloud like each word is the most important one on the page, see if you can light enough candles to not need to use a lamp and open your window even though it’s cold, go for a walk and see if you can take a turn you haven’t taken before, live life as a challenge of how fun and dramatic a tiny world can be

Time for another monthly check in!
It's midterms week, and life is sort of all over the place. I am staying very busy with Bible study on Tuesday nights, church Wednesday nights, and campus ministry meetings on Thursdays. I also have homework all of those days, so my schedule is jam-packed with things to do and people to see. I'm glad I'm keeping myself occupied and involved, but I have to be careful not to overdo it. I think I could get really burnt out if I don't say no to a few things here and there, but for the moment I'm doing okay and keeping my head up.
It's October! My birthday month and my favorite season/weather is here (almost lol). I love fall and the crisp mornings and golden afternoons. I'm really looking forward to another break, but we're just at midterm I just have to breathe and take it one step at a time.
I think I've made a genuine friend in my sociolinguistics class, she's nerdy like me and is very sweet! She recognized my Van Gogh Doctor Who mask and told me that none of her other nerdy friends in her DND group watch Doctor Who, and I told her I'd always wanted to play DND but never met anyone else who played... we pretty much nerded out after class today, talked about video games, and decided we needed to hang out sometime outside of class, so I'm pretty stoked about making a new friend.

Hey study buddies, a fellow blogger reached out to me and asked if I would help them with some data collection for school! There's a quick, three question survey that literally takes two minutes to fill out about how many books you read in a month. If you'd like to fill it out, click the link! I promise it's safe, I went through and filled out the form myself, it's just a google form.

14 September 2021 | 17:33 - Tuesday
Month one of university life has been interesting to say the least.
I'm doing pretty well in most of my classes, though they're stressful. It's difficult to stay motivated right now, as I don't really feel like doing much of anything. Sociolinguistics is starting to go over my head and I don't feel like I'm really understanding the concepts. But my literature class is starting to pick up and become more interesting and I feel a little more involved in discussion. We finally started one of our novels which has been more enjoyable for me. Spanish is way more of a challenge than I was expecting. I have my first exam tomorrow and I do not feel confident about it. I'm going to spend most of my evening studying for it. I got my grade back on my first paper that was due last week, and I got a 95! I was not expecting to do so well, especially since I wrote it in about four hours, but I'm happy with the grade and my professor wrote some nice comments and feedback.
I don't quite feel like myself. I haven't been acting like my usual self. I went on my very first date. It was with a friend I've known for a while and things were going well at first, but we've decided to just stay friends for now. Before uni, I didn't date or anything like that, so it has been really strange to see myself acting this way. I think I'm still not quite ready to enter the dating scene and I have too many other things to do anyway. My brain is tired, but it's not as foggy and messy as it was last week. I am ready for a break and for the weather to cool down. My mom said yesterday that I seemed burnt out, and she is very right. I am burnt out. I don't think I have time to slow down though. If I don't do work on a Saturday then I'm slammed with it on Sunday and it doesn't stop.
I'm exhausted mentally and emotionally, but this week has already been better than last week so I have hope that things will continue to improve and get easier. For now, I'm just taking it a day at a time and trusting God to meet my daily needs. He takes care of me.

19 August 2021 | 19:02 - Thursday
(this is a picture I took last week on campus while I was waiting for my friend. He was bringing me a smoothie but he was kind of far away, so I pulled out my borrowed copy of Pride and Prejudice to read until he found me. It was really hot that day, so I was happy that I found a nice place in the shade to read while I waited.)
Hello, my study buddies!
I've made it through my first two days of classes, and I didn't even have a meltdown! I'm calling that a win.
It's been a hectic few days, but I think this semester is going to go really well. I absolutely adore my colloquium in lit class and my sociolinguistics class, and the other two I've had are going to be challenging but interesting. I've got some catching up to do in Spanish, but I'm not at the bottom of the class which is sort of a nice feeling. There are other people in my class who are struggling more than me, and I was worried that I would be way out of my depth. I guess it's comforting to know that other people in my class will be challenged along with me.
My professors are all pretty friendly and funny, and one of them is actually speaking at the Duolingo conference tomorrow which is really cool! I'm hoping to be able to watch her talk at some point tomorrow.
I've been able to spend time with friends in between classes, which has been really nice, and I think it's helped me not get too overwhelmed with being in a new place with a bunch of new people. I feel like I have a support system and there's always someone around that I can meet up with. It makes the huge campus seem less lonely. I'm very fortunate to go to the same school as my friends!
One more day until the weekend! I am really looking forward to getting my routine settled so I can get into a groove of working. University life has been exciting and tiring so far, but I think I'm going to love it.

07222021 - 09.39
Thursday
(I am sitting in a big chair with a warm blanket, fighting the urge to take a mid-morning nap, and trying to figure out how I'm feeling because right now I'm a little spaced out.)
Good morning, my studyblr friends. I hope you're doing okay!
I have five days left in my summer semester and then I will officially have my associate's degree! I'm so excited (and a little nervous) to go to university in the fall! I'll finally get to go to school with my friends again, and I have missed them so much! I have a few things left to do in the next five days:
English reading
English discussion posts (3 w. 1 reply each)
Study guide for the English final essay
Take the English final
Social Problems final project
Religion exam 4
I would really like to have all this done by the end of the day on Sunday but I know I'm going to be working all the way through the day on Tuesday. Wednesday I plan to sleep in as late as I want and then finish the book I've been trying to read for months. That's all I want to do. I might go plop at my friend's apartment while I do it, but I don't want to do any sort of work. I just want to read.
I need just a little burst of motivation to push me through the next five days, so in my breaks, I'm going to be watching motivational youtube videos, listening to podcasts, and cleaning my house because those things make me feel more productive! I can do this. In the words of one of my students, "people can do hard things."
Thanks, Madison, for reminding me that I am part of people and I can do hard things, too. Just five more days! I can do this.

What other people think Dark Academia is: Pretentious rich white people who are actual geniuses, know 10 languages, have 5 research papers published, are narcissistic assholes with a nicotine addiction, etc.
What Dark Academia actually is: Young people who were told they were smart when they were little, tied their entire self worth to that, and are now trying to motivate themselves to actually do well in school, having the fourth mental breakdown this week while trying to finish 6 overdue assignments and writing a poem/story at the same time to help themselves cope as they keep getting distracted by all the books they want to read and the language/instrument they want to learn while wearing turtlenecks and tweed for the aesthetic and who are on their third cup of tea/coffee of the day.
