I have been so depressed lately I haven’t been able to post any sturgeons but I saw this on the Great Lakes aquarium Instagram his name is CRACKERS he is a BELUGA STURGEON they are TARGET TRAINING HIM so that he can eventually enter a sling comfortably to get his checkups!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A big part of my job is spent staring at animals and learning to quickly tell them apart. I'd like to think I've gotten pretty good at that -- at least with the sturgeon. These two photos were taken half a year ago, and the exposure is ridiculously bad (I have another more recent batch of aquarium photos being developed, and looking at these two does NOT inspire confidence.) Despite the comically ambiguous silhouettes, I can still recognize Bartok and Crackers when I see them.

Bartok is probably the most interesting personality I've ever met in a fish; he's one of the most social touchpool residents we have, and loves to spyhop (spyhopping, for those who don't know, is when an aquatic animal sticks its head out of the water and bobs up and down in an attempt to observe its surroundings.) He's been getting really good at it too! The other day I saw him launch half of his body out of the water while spyhopping along a wall. I swear, one of these days Bartok is gonna fall right out of the pool and I'm gonna get more grey hairs (only 26 btw.)

I heard Crackers got mildly Tumblr-famous somewhat recently; is that true? Let me know if you've heard about Crackers the beluga sturgeon. For those of you who have, Crackers is doing well. He's still off-touch, but that doesn't stop him from coming up to guests every day in hopes of headpats. Don't give in to his charm! He'll get itchy!! He's a big eater -- my coworkers who do sturgeon feed tell me that he chomps down real hard on their wrists when they feed him. Haven't gotten to experience it myself yet, but I'm finally getting trained on it this week, so I'll be sure to report back another time lol.
