☁️ DON'T TELL MAMA
"come here both of you! you're gonna fall," chris' voice sounds across the hallway as he chases his two children, amara and kai, but it is rather evident he doesn't want them to stop, finding himself amused at the situation more than he would like to admit it.
"daddy you can't get us!" amara laughs as she holds tightly onto kai's hand, pulling her younger brother with her and smiling at the giggles escaping his lips.
of course, chris can most definitely easily catch up with his kids but he is enjoying their excited squeals far too much to end them so quickly. eventually though, he tackles the two of them into his arms before tickling them one by one and grinning at their squirming and yelling.
"daddy's got you," he laughs, swiping his fingers softly and struggling to fight off the delicate swelling of his heart as he sees the two of them having the time of their lives.
"too much daddy, 's too much," kai giggles uncontrollably, pushing his dad away and gasping for air through his laughter whilst forcing himself to push harder.
chris stumbles back dramatically and the smiles adorning his kids' faces are certainly enough for him to act as though they are far too strong for him.
"come on babies, let's go watch something," he uses his right hand to hold amara's hand and his left hand to hold kai's, leading them to the living room where the soft couch welcomes them instantly.
"can we watch pongebob?" kai asks, unable to pronounce the cartoon properly but still sounding ever so adorable as he settles onto chris' lap without so much as a second of hesitation.
amara huddles against chris' side, wrapping her small hand around chris' free hand that isn't holding kai in place. chris nods his head quickly as a means of reply, using the remote amara hands to him to search the show on the tv and relishing in how eager his kids are to watch something he too loves more than anything.
"oh, i like this episode," chris comments, bouncing kai on his thigh lightly because he can see his eyes begin to droop shut despite him wanting to watch the cartoon the most in the first place.
"remember we can't tell mama we stayed up this late okay?" chris tells them, making sure to ingrain the message yet again because he knows his wife will not allow him to hear the end of it if she finds out.
"we promise," amara says on both their behalves, interlocking her pinky finger with her dad's immediately before lifting kai's finger and leading him to do the same.
it doesn't take long at all for kai to fall asleep, his little arms wrapped around chris' neck and his face squished into the crook of his dad's neck. amara giggles at the sight, toying around with her dad's fingers with her eyes glued to the screen.
amara has this strange habit where she refuses to blink when she watches a show, trying her utmost hardest to keep her eyes open. chris notices her doing it once again and sighs a little, making sure it's entirely inaudible to his daughter because he doesn't want her to think she's a burden of some sort that he can't handle, even when he's scolding her.
"ammy?" he says and she turns to him with a  small smile, nodding her head so he can continue speaking, "what do me and mama say about keeping your eyes open for too long?"
amara widens her eyes at the reminder, a little spark of fear flickering through her eyes as she answers chris, "it's gonna make it go super big."
chris can't help but laugh as she uses her fingers to demonstrate the large eyes and he hums, "mhm and we don't want super big eyes, do we?"
amara shakes her head no rapidly, going back to watching spongebob and blinking far more frequently than need be to prevent herself from keeping her eyes wide.
"daddy?" she asks him loudly after a while with a yawn and chris shushes her a little so that she doesn't wake up kai in the process before signalling for her to keep talking.
"why can't we tell mama?" she whispers ever so quietly to the point chris almost misses her words completely.
"because," he rubs their intertwined hands together before proceeding, "i'm letting you guys be grown ups and grown ups are very good at keeping secrets."
"really?" amara asks excitedly, her eyes gleaming at the prospect of being treated like a grown up by her dad which honestly melts chris' heart.
"really, we have to make sure mama doesn't know her babies are big, strong adults hm? out little secret," he encourages her and she smiles widely at him, another yawn leaving her and telling chris she's on the verge of falling asleep.
he pulls her closer to his side and begins to stroke her head with his hand lightly, listening to her adorable yawns until they eventually stop and light snores can be heard in their place. his plan is to laze around for a few minutes before putting the two into their respective beds but he accidentally ends up falling asleep, his kids glued to him and a delicate smile plastered across his face as he holds them tightly.
truth be told, he doesn't even hear his wife come home from work, completely missing her entrance to the living room as his eyes remain closed and consumed with rest.
she smiles at the adoring sight, quickly grabbing the remote to switch the tv off before pressing a soft kiss to chris' forehead. she follows this by pecking kai and amara's cheeks and then, as per usual, capturing a little picture of the scene on her phone so she can look back on it and show her miniature family whenever she pleases.
when she goes to lift amara to place her into her bed first, chris stirs awake and instantly notices his wife smiling endearingly at him. he returns the gesture and makes her bend her body slightly so he can kiss her lips.
forcing himself to get up, he continues to hold kai in his arms as he takes him to his bedroom, tucking him into bed with a gentle i love you and paired kiss.
he makes his way to his shared bedroom and finds his wife already seated on the bed, discarding her work clothes with an exhausted look. he approaches her calmly, sitting behind her on the bed and moving his fingers to massage her shoulders lovingly, making her sigh contentedly.
"i missed you baby," he mumbles and she relaxes further into his touch, ridding herself of her rings as she takes in his words.
"i missed you too honey," she responds before turning her head to look over her shoulder at him, "but that doesn't mean you can get away with letting them stay up so late."
he offers her a sheepish smile, kissing her shoulders as an apology and moving her hair to one side to press multiple pecks to her collarbone. he knows she's acting annoyed but she can't stay mad at him, especially not when the first thing she saw as she entered their house was that adorable.

☁️ SO THIS IS LOVE

warnings ⎯ chris x fem!oc, fluff, mentions of previous relationships, cursing, very rushed, short and not proofread
A/N ⎯ happy valentines day lovers! this is the first time in my nineteen years of existing that i actually have a valentine and it feels so surreal?? quickly whipped this up because the request only came today so i apologise for the length (also ily too anonymous)
i hope you enjoy <3
❛ ━━・❪ ִ ࣪𖤐 ❫ ・━━ ❜
delilah swiped to the next tik tok, sick of seeing every single one about valentines. she would be lying if she said she was surprised to see yet another video of a couple.
don't get her wrong, it wasn't as though she was jealous, she just didn't particularly understand the hype like everyone else did. for years, she had watched others on the day, not comprehending why the day was so special. even when she actually had a boyfriend the previous year, he never so much as uttered the words happy valentines to her. it was something she had grown accustomed to, the idea of spending the day like any other.
so even this year, when chris and her had decided he would pick her up to go his place, not once did she question it. she merely believed it was another regular day of her hanging out with her boyfriend. she wasn't expecting anything else as she awaited his arrival, sitting atop the bottom step with her shoes on so she could leave quickly.
chris 💖💖💖
i'm outside ma
del ❤️❤️
coming out in a sec
and that was exactly what she did, getting up from the steps and making the short walk to her front door before opening it and stepping outside. she saw his car parked nearby and made the small trek to it. she smiled to herself when he leaned over and opened the door from the inside, seeing as his car was still on. she stepped into the vehicle and gave him a soft smile.
he returned it easily, leaning a little once more to press a quick but sweet kiss to her more than welcoming lips. she smiled against his lips as they pulled apart and his eyes raked over her outfit and face.
"you look so fucking beautiful," he told her as he began to pull out of his spot and begin driving to his house.
"thank you, can't say the same for you," she teased with a laugh and he playfully rolled his eyes at her, the dynamic already feeling the way it always did; something the two of them adored more than anything.
"how has your day been?" he questioned, glancing at the rear view mirror briefly to check his surroundings before resting his hand on her thigh.
she slightly shuddered at the touch. he still made her feel goose bumps even after months and months of being together. the effect he had on her never dissipated and she would be embarrassed if not for the fact that she knew it was a mutual thing.
"pretty boring, i've just been waiting around for you to come and get me. i missed you," she stated even though they had literally seen each other a couple days ago.
"i missed you too, i always miss you," he grinned at her before he took a different turn to the usual route they took.
"i think you missed that turn love," she pointed out and he fought back his smile before turning to quickly face her with a shrug.
"it's basically the same thing," he lied but she furrowed her brows as she knew they were getting further and further away from his house.
"are you feeling⎯ " she started but she was cut off by his questioning words.
"close your eyes baby," he instructed and she looked towards him in confusion, wondering if she heard his words correctly.
"what?" she met his eyes and he grinned at her, only increasing her curiosity by the second.
"close them, you trust me right?" he pointed and she nodded rapidly, doing as he said and closing her eyes as she felt the car drive a little more before he parked somewhere.
she heard him step out of the car and move to her side, opening the door and grabbing her hand to help her out of the car. she kept her eyes shut per his commands and grasped his hand tightly, not knowing what to expect in the slightest.
"what are we doing?" she pondered aloud, walking in line with him and smiling when she felt his hands around her waist, guiding her to wherever they were headed.
"sh patience mama, we're almost there," he grinned, his hands rubbing soft circles against her skin and making her sigh contentedly.
then he paused in his tracks and turned to face her. if she felt the next place she was walking, she would instantly recognise where they were and he certainly didn't want that. he thought for a small moment before an idea popped into his head.
"why are we stopping?" her query was answered when he picked her up, her legs instantly wrapping around him with a slight yelp escaping her lips at the suddenness.
"you better be keeping those eyes closed," he warned her with a laugh and she couldn't help but laugh to despite not knowing what exactly was happening.
she would say they⎯ well he⎯ walked for around another minute before he at last stopped and placed her onto the ground softly, swivelling her body around so she was facing whatever he wanted her to.
she smiled as she felt the sand beneath her shoes; she loved the beach and chris knew that. it was a nice surprise but she had no idea what else was about to happen. he pulled her body so her back was pressed to his front and hooked his head over her shoulder.
"you can open your eyes now," he sounded so excited and she instantly allowed her eyes to fly open, a small gasp being released as her eyes surveyed the sight in front of her.
in front of them was a picnic blanket with all of her favourite things placed atop it from jam tarts to pasties to fruit and everything in between. there was a small hamper with a bunch of makeup and perfume as well as skin care products she always rambled on about but didn't think chris remembered. there was a small heart shaped cake in the centre that she couldn't quite make out the words written on but she would be lying if she said she didn't have a small inkling. the plates and glasses were pink and he had a few rose petals sprinkled all over the place.
she turned to him with the largest smile he had ever seen, "chris... oh my god. you're a fucking angel. i love you so much, this is so sweet."
he was about to tell her he loved her just as much, if not more, but her lips quickly found his in a passionate kiss. he slightly stumbled back at the force but quickly steadied himself, wrapping his arms around her waist and relishing in the way her hands found his neck and hair. she pulled away with a flushed look and a smile like none he had ever seen before.
"happy valentine's day baby," he breathed out, pressing another kiss to her lips and internally feeling relief that she actually liked his efforts.
"happy valentine's day," it was the first time in her life she had heard those words spoken to her and the first time she had said them to anyone.
she understood where people were coming from now. the magical sensation of being surprised and love being showed through the effort their partner put it. she adored chris more than anything but she never would have anticipated something like this. she didn't even think it was possible for something like this to happen.
she pulled him into the tightest embrace, speaking into his chest, "i love you so so much, no one has ever done anything like this for me before."
"no one? didn't you have a boyfriend last year?" he furrowed his brows in confusion; surely her ex had spoiled her the way she so desperately deserved.
"i mean yeah but we never celebrated, i never got the hype," she pulled away from him with a shrug and he looked appalled.
"you mean the idiot never did anything to show you how special you are?" he pondered aloud, ensuring he was understanding her words correctly.
she blushed at his words and shook her head, making him drop his jaw open in utter shock.
"what a fucking ass," chris rolled his eyes and she snickered at his words, not realising why he was making it such a big thing but at the same time noticing just how happy she was over chris actually doing something for her.
"now i feel bad... i just assumed you wouldn't want to celebrate either and i never even got you anything but you did all⎯" he stopped her rambling with a kiss, silencing her and making sure he poured every last emotion into the connection.
"stop talking ma, i don't expect shit in return," he told her and she beamed at him, feeling more loved than ever and wanting to remain in this moment for an eternity and more.
"come on, let's eat this shit, i'm hungry," he pulled her to sit beside him on one of the cushions but eventually he found herself straddling his lap, the most comfortable place if you asked her.
"so pretty," he mumbled against her neck and she hummed happily.
"you're so perfect," she returned, brushing her fingers through his hair and loving the way he leaned into her touch lightly.
he pulled away to look into her eyes, "i love you so much."
she pecked his cheek and when she pulled away, she spoke again, "i love you so so much."

☁️ THE PROJECT #5
summary ⎯ a biology project; that's all it is intended to be, a matter of communication amongst classmates in order to succeed yet the more time chris and aluna spend together, the harder it becomes to distinguish the line between requirement and want. they are required to work together, to spend time with one another and to exist beside one another until suddenly it doesn't feel forced. what is supposed to be simply completing a project turns into an unmistakable connection of hearts.
part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
warnings ⎯ chris x fem!poc!oc, cursing, fluff, grumpy!oc and sunshine!chris, eventual smut, not proofread, mentions of anxiety, toxic homelife, mentions of selfharm, angst, hurt and comfort, etc.
A/N ⎯ another series baby! i'm loving this so far and the comments and messages i've gotten have been so sweet i love you all 😭😭😭😭😭
this one's a little short because i quickly wrote it because i'm working on a valentine's request too
i hope you enjoy <3
❛ ━━・❪ ִ ࣪𖤐 ❫ ・━━ ❜
"thought you weren't coming for a second there," chris laughed softly as he closed his front door, welcoming aluna into the house and taking her to their usual spot in the living room.
she breathed a heavy sigh at his words, her mind still engulfed and filled with her tiresome day, "i was just helping around the house."
i was making sure my dad didn't slut-shame me for coming to your house.
he could see it in her eyes, the way she was looking to the floor as she spoke as though she was afraid they'd tell her secrets if she looked at him. not once had she given him eye contact and the first few times, he had believed it was due to the fact she had no idea who he was but now, it was evident she was doing so un purpose. he didn't exactly know why and he didn't want to push it but it was something that replayed in his mind, yet another mystery regarding her, so to speak.
they got to work straight away, making adjustments to what they had already done and increasing their work load in the meantime. chris watched as she drew diagrams across the paper, not a single line out of place and the colours precise beyond belief, something he himself struggled with a lot. they had decided she would do all the drawing and he'd focus on getting the actual information onto the paper, the both of them researching. it made the most sense and neither of them disapproved so chris was joyous.
she could have sworn she felt his gaze on her as she outlined the nucleotides so she raised her head from the paper, meeting his eyes for a fleeting moment before dropping the connection. she wasn't really sure why he was staring at her and her movements with such interest or why he never looked away when she caught him in the act.
"am i doing it wrong?" was the first assumption she made, fearing she was ruining the project for him and that he was judging her work.
he shook his head rapidly, a small reassuring smile making its way onto his face, "hey no, it looks perfect. i was just admiring it. this doesn't look like someone who's okay at art did it."
she felt the heat rise to her cheeks at his words and she shook her head, her lip catching itself between her teeth in a bundle of nerves. she was never one to receive compliments and she didn't exactly have knowledge on how to go about them.
"it's nothing really," she cast his amazement aside or at least she attempted to because chris was still looking at her as though she bad drawn the greatest thing in the universe before his very eyes.
"that's nothing? i wish i could draw even a little bit like that. have you always known how to draw?" he traced his fingers over the various drawings with a glimmer in his eyes that made her heart skip a beat or two.
"i taught myself when i was younger and then i just never stopped," she explained minimally and he hummed in response.
"so this is your idea of fun?" he thought back to their conversation the other day and she nodded slowly, her eyes following his gentle movements against the paper.
"yeah and- and watching stars," her innocent eyes looked up at him and for the first time, their eyes made contact and time felt frozen, a loop of endless fascination.
she looked so pure, so fucking beautiful. it was such a simplistic moment yet he felt his breath hitch at the sight. he wanted to survey the small shine in the pool of honey, brown forever. he wanted to freeze their movements and memorise the way her eyes welcomed him without even trying. she was flawless and there was no way he was going to let her go without telling her as such.
"god, you're so pretty," the words fell from his lips without his permission yet he couldn't fine it within himself to care seeing as he was being entirely honest.
"what?" it was said in a nervous whisper, one that painted an image in chris' head instantly.
from her tone alone, he could tell she truly had no idea how gorgeous she was. her eyes travelled the course of his face, searching for a sign to show her he wasn't being honest but all she could see was his eyes swallowing her. she grew anxious under his gaze and began to squirm, picking at her nails to refrain from completely losing her mind.
"you're so fucking pretty, has no one ever told you that before?" he repeated without hesitation and she felt her heart going crazy, pounding as though it would fail if it went any slower.
she could only shake her head and chris genuinely was surprised. how was it that she was this flawless and no had made a comment on it before?
"holy fuck you must be around blind people," he teased and she rolled her eyes at his words, trying her hardest to settle the beating of her heart that kept increasing whenever he said anything.
"just focus on the project chris," she concluded, not looking or making eye contact with him again because she honestly did not know what to make of their small interaction.
"oh my god you're flustered!" he exclaimed with a giggle and she quickly hid her face in her hands, hoping he didn't continue to tease her because she was seconds away from running away due to her flustered state.
"don't worry aluna, i have that effect on people," he smirked.
was he seriously flirting with her right now? no one had ever flirted with her before and she was absolutely clueless when it came to any of this sort of thing. she looked to the floor, continuing to draw and biting at her lips.
that wasn't really a good idea to chris though because now all he could do was focus on her plump lips that fit so perfectly on her face. she licked at them and he had to scold himself to look away. god he barely knew her yet here she was, her every move driving him crazy without her even intending to. he was not sure how he was supposed to continue with this project acting as though she wasn't beginning to plague his mind.

❛ ━━・❪ ִ ࣪𖤐 ❫ ・━━ ❜
"sturniolo three, you're late," mrs david looked up from her desk and chris gave her a sheepish smile as he glanced at his brothers who simply laughed at him.
"i lost track of time i'm sorry, it won't happen again," chris apologised sincerely, making his way to the back where aluna was doing some research for their project.
he sat down next to her with a soft smile, one that appeared too sympathetic for her liking but she chose not to dwell on it. she gave him the slightest smile, hoping she didn't come across as rude.
if there was one thing about aluna, it was the way she disassociated when something went wrong. she never cared to communicate with people in the first place but moments like the one from the day prior made her shut down even further. normally it would be fine given the fact that she never had anyone she was required to talk to but this time it was different. this time there was chris whom she knew could not deal with complete silence and was most definitely going to spike up a conversation of some sort with her.
"your phone case is different," he pointed out lazily and she felt herself freeze a little.
it was different. she had changed it so she wouldn't remember the interaction with her dad everytime she so much as glanced at her phone. but he noticed. he noticed something so small yet so big.
"felt like switching up," she responded, glancing back at the case to see the way it enveloped her phone.
"spontaneous," he teased and she couldn't help but laugh at his words.
chris could have sworn everything around him paused when she laughed. it sounded beautiful, so pure and innocent and as though it had been building up. he wanted to hear it more often, to see this side of her that she hid away for reasons unknown to him. he smiled at her and she looked away with flushed cheeks, embarrassed for some reason.
"don't hide away, you're allowed to laugh. especially when you're in the presence of somebody as funny as me," he beamed at her and she shook her head at his words but chris could see she was holding back a smile.
"i'm not hiding away," she rolled her eyes at him but she was trying her hardest not to smile.
there was something about being in chris' presence that was easy. existing alongside him almost felt like second nature and she wasn't used to such normality when it came to new situations. she didn't know what it was but it was in a way reassuring. it made her feel human so to speak. it made her feel human because she was starting to get the hang of the whole communication aspect. sure she wasn't anywhere close to the level she saw others at but slowly but surely she felt herself peeling back her layers. in the moment she would appreciate it but then she'd recall how nothing good lasts and the light always burnt out so why would she waste her time on something temporary? for now, she allowed herself to live in the moment.
"come on let me ask you something, what's your favourite season? actually wait let me guess," he paused for a moment and when he saw her waiting expectantly for an answer, he proceeded, "is it spring?"
"how the hell did you know that?" her eyes widened in surprise and he laughed at the expression, offering a small shrug of his shoulders.
she breathed in slowly, "can i guess yours?"
"yeah of course," he fucking beamed at her and the way she was actually placing herself in the conversation rather than allowing him to do all the talking.
"i feel like yours would be summer," she commented and he nodded his head eagerly, implying she was correct and making her smile yet again.
"why did you guess summer?" he raised his eyebrows playfully, wanting to know more.
"um you kind of just have a lot of energy and like you're very eager to talk and do things so it just made sense i guess?" she almost questioned hesitantly because she didn't want to offend him in any way.
"that was pretty accurate," he laughed softly and she felt her body physically ease at the response.
"why spring?" she couldn't help but ask, wanting to know how she was perceived.
chris paused for a brief moment; he wasn't entirely sure his reasoning would sit right with her and he didn't want to ruin the dynamic just as it started.
"i don't want you to feel like i'm reading into things too much," he told her and she looked at him curiously; now she most certainly wanted to know the reasoning for his choice.
"no go on, i wanna know," she shook her head, picking at her nails in slight anticipation.
chris stared at her hands and she sighed a little before dropping them to her sides, leaving him to grin at her before beginning to speak, "i feel like you like spring because it's in the middle like it's not too hot and it's not too cold. maybe you don't like too much of something because it can get overwhelming so you enjoy the balance."
read like a fucking book.
"i- what? how did you do that?" she questioned him, her lips parted slightly due to the shock towards the accuracy.
"i can just read people well," he brushed it off but she was still wondering how anyone could do something even remotely close to that.
following that, there was silence where they got back to work but for one of the first times, aluna didn't feel like it was an uncomfortable silence. she didn't feel as though silence was a negative aspect but more so a reflection of them getting used to each other or well, her getting used to him.
and then she did something she never would have expected in a million years, she spoke and broke the silence herself and it wasn't even about their task at hand, "what do you do for fun?"
chris looked around the room, almost as if he was expecting her to have been speaking to someone else. when he saw her eyes trained on him, he was rather surprised to say the least.
"i like going out with people or just being around people, mostly my brothers. if feels nice having company around you, you know?" he smiled at the thought.
she didn't know. in fact, company for her was unsettling and the ides of that being fun sort of alarmed her. it was strange how people worked in different ways. her idea of fun was to be alone and paint until her hands grew tired or watch stars until her eyes began to close yet here chris was, saying all he needed to have a good time was someone else.
"doesn't company ever feel like it's a lot?"
"not really, i always feel like things get too much when i'm alone," he confessed and she never really thought of it from that perspective until now.
"it must be nice, having brothers to keep you company at home," she found herself saying, ignoring the little jealousy she felt because she, of course, never had anyone by her side at home that could comfort her when things went wrong.
"it's the best, especially because matt and nick are my triplet brothers. it feels like having built in best friends. are you an only child?" he rambled lightly before addressing her in a curious tone.
she nodded her head as a means of a reply, her mind running loose with how different things may have been if she had a nick or matt in her life. she always felt alone, even in the most crowded of rooms but especially when she was home. her dad was just a reminder of what she could have had but he stripped that away from her.
he wasn't always like that but then again, things started to go wrong at a very young age. her mother died when she was only four but she was never told how, only blamed on several occasions by her father. it was always her fault and from then on, she felt like a burden in her own house. her house never felt like a home again and her dad was like a stranger who hated her for no reason.
sometimes she too blamed herself. it was stupid because she was never made aware of the matter itself. she had no idea how her mom died yet part of her soaked her dad's words in like a sponge. maybe it was her fault but she was only a child. no child should have been treated the way she was. there was never any physical abuse but as crazy as it sounded, sometimes she wished there was. physical abuse would leave bruises and scars that would someday fade but his words never vanished from her head. at night she would play them in her head over and over again until she fell asleep, only to wake up the next morning and remember she had no one there to tell her otherwise. she felt alone no matter where she was and she hated it. she hated it yet she had grown accustomed to it, to the point she knew nothing but loneliness.
"i mean at least you still have your parents," he smiled softly, of course not understanding what his words planted in her head.
"yeah," she mumbled but it wasn't true; she didn't remember a time when she felt like she had a parent never mind parents.
"do you have any pets?" another question he didn't realise would have such a strong impact on her.
she still remembered her childhood, pleading with her dad to get a pet of any sort so she at least had something but he simply turned her down. she remembered crying her eyes out in her room when she saw people walking past the window with dogs. she wanted that so badly until she didn't. now animals just served as a reminder of yet another thing she was deprived of.
"no, do you?" she replied simply, wanting to shift the focus onto him before she ended up snapping.
"a dog, his name is trevor," chris lit up when he talked about him and all aluna could do was smile, living vicariously through him.
"that's cute... um, can i see him?" she pondered nervously but chris' excitement showed her she had nothing to worry about.
he pulled his phone out from his pocket and clicked on his photos, pressing the most recent one with trevor that just so happened to have him holding the dog. aluna glanced at the picture with a smile, her eyes raking over the dog before they landed on chris. he looked so happy in the picture and it made her feel happy in a strange way. from what she could see, he was always smiling and she sort of admired him for it. it must have been nice to feel at ease with the world.
"you looking at trevor or me sanchez?" he teased and she pulled her eyes away from the screen, rolling them when she looked at chris who was grinning at her.
"are you always smiling?" she pointed out and he shrugged happily.
"you're like the sun," she voiced without meaning to and she instantly scolded herself mentally for the carelessness.
"i am? in what way?" he looked at her with interest, as though he wanted to know every last thing the comment held behind it.
and then the bell rang to signal the end of the lesson, leaving aluna to breathe a quick sigh of relief and chris a little frustrated that he never found out more. she mumbled a quick goodbye and then she was gone, like she never spoke to him and asked him questions, like she never called him the sun.
he shook his head fondly and then smiled when nick and matt approached him as he packed away his stuff into his backpack.
"you're smiling like a fucking creep," nick deadpanned and chris couldn't help but laugh; he sort of was smiling like a weirdo.
"she actually spoke to me," he told them excitedly as they made their way towards the door.
"she did?" matt turned to him in disbelief and chris nodded his head enthusiastically.
"what does it mean if someone says you're like the sun?" he turned to them, avoiding matt's question somewhat without even meaning to do as such.
"she said that to you?" nick raised his eyebrows, shock apparent in his expression when chris nodded his head in approval.
"why don't you ask her?" matt teased, discretely pointing to her across the corridor, her headphones over her ears and head looking to the ground as always.
chris sighed, "i did, the bell rang and she kind of ran away."
"i'd run away from you too," nick smiled sarcastically and chris shoved his shoulder, a small laugh escaping his lips as he watched her walk away, turning the corner and leaving his sight.

aluna felt bare without her bracelet and she also felt pathetic for feeling that way in the first place. it was just the fact she always had that bracelet on her wrist to keep her occupied. in a way, it grounded her and distracted her from whatever she was trying to avoid going on around her. as she headed for her free study period, she went to touch it but sighed when she remembered it isn't there.
that's when she heard the sound of her name being called. a very unfamiliar occurrence that she had to make sure she wasn't imagining. when she turned around and met chris, her hesitance as to whether or not she was dreaming dissipated. she stared at him and followed the movement of his right hand as it reached for his left and pulled off the bracelet.
he was wearing her bracelet.
"here you go," he smiled at her, placing the bracelet in her hand and lightly brushing her palm without meaning to.
she almost jumped at the strange contact but quickly composed herself, placing the bracelet back in its rightful place before raising her head to look at chris. she wondered why he was lingering around until she noticed the way his eyes were trained on her wrist.
"what do the charms mean?" he suddenly asked and she was not expecting the question, rather taken aback at the direct approach because well, no one had ever asked her such a question before.
"they're just random," lie.
"really? i thought the stars made sense because you said you preferred the night. do you like looking at stars?" another connection he had so simply made and she didn't even know how to respond.
"sometimes i do," she admitted shyly, a small part of her internally celebrating at the way she didn't shut him down completely and actually answered him, despite how miniature.
"on your own?" he questioned, leaning against the lockers behind them as though he wasn't planning on leaving the conversation alone any time soon.
"um yeah, from my rooftop," she shrugged, trying to conclude their talk but this just stimulated another question in chris' head that he wanted answered.
he just wanted to know everything about her. it was a little alarming given the short amount of time it had been since he even met her but she fascinated him. her small answers gave him a little but he wanted more. he knew she had more to give, regardless of whether or not she believed it herself.
"why?" it's a simple enough question but it caused the wheels in her head to begin turning rapidly.
he was showing too much interest in her. she was letting him in too much. she didn't let people in. this wasn't a good idea. this was a bad idea. this was⎯
"aluna?" it was the soft sound of his concerned voice that brought her out of the trance she had unwillingly stepped into.
his eyes held concern and she absolutely hated it, "sorry what?"
"are you okay?" she hated that question even more, with every single fibre inside of her.
"fine," she mumbled, walking away but stopping when his hand caught her wrist.
his expression was sombre and she had to suck in a deep breath before he spoke, "i'm sorry, was it something i said?"
yes. no. maybe. it was just you. you who just said things people have never said before, observed what people have never cared to before. just you.
"no i just have to go," she rushed out before turning around entirely and walking away, heart hammering in her chest as she did so, feeling his gaze sharp on her tail until she at last turns the corner.
"wait⎯" she didn't allow him to finish his sentence, hurrying away and leaving him in a daze of confusion, shaking his head and heading to his next period.
aluna did her best to avoid chris for the rest of the day, sighing heavily out of relief when she at last reached home. she collapsed onto her bed, choosing to ignore her dad sprawled out on the living room couch. she was just about to remove her makeup when her phone pinged.
chris (bio)
you ran off before i could ask sorry for the short notice. i have guests at my house today so is it okay for us to work on the project at yours?
aluna🌙
sorry i just had somewhere to be
my place is fine but can you come a little later?
chris (bio)
is 6 okay?
aluna🌙
that's fine my address is 44, summerset close
chris (bio)
perfect see you then :)
she clicked her phone shut, tossing it onto her bed before going to adjust her room slightly, knowing she was definitely not letting chris stay in the living room or any place her dad could see them. speaking of her dad, after a while he barged into her room suddenly, 'forgetting' to knock as always.
"give me your phone," her dad's voice sounded, pulling her out of focus and shifting her attention to the all too familiar scowl planted across his face.
"why?" she didn't even know what gave her the confidence to ask such s thing when she would normally listen to him without a heartbeat.
"that wasn't a fucking question, give me your phone," and she knew not to mess with him, handing him the phone with a nervous sensation consuming her.
he toyed around with it for a few moment before he almost handed it back, until it had to ping with a spam notification, bringing him to click on the messages app. her heart hammered in her chest, beating far too fast to be deemed normal. she had no idea what her dad was doing at the moment and she wasn't sure she wanted to find out.
"who the fuck is chris?" she pressed her eyes shut and cringed a little at the sound of his name, so bitter and distasteful from her dad's tongue.
"he's my partner for a biology project," she explained, trying to keep herself as calm as possible so she wouldn't betray her own head and get on his bad side, though she wasn't sure of the last time she wasn't on his bad side.
"you've never worked with partners before? and you're giving him our address? is he your little fucktoy?" question after question that made liquid begin to pool in her eyes but she refused to let the tears fall, not in front of him.
she inhaled a little, grounding herself before she responded, "no dad he's just my partner i swear, all we need to do is work on the project."
"do i look stupid to you? do you think i'm as braindead as you? make sure he doesn't come over or i'll smash his fucking face in," he threw her phone to the floor and walked out the room, leaving her to at last allow the tears to fall.
aluna🌙
sorry something came up you can't come over tonight
chris (bio)
you're all good dw
aluna🌙
i'm sorry
chris (bio)
is everything okay?
aluna🌙
why wouldn't it be?
chris (bio)
just checking, i'll see you tomorrow
read 4 47 pm
and after that she allowed her emotions to truly consume her. teardrops flowed from her eyes to the point she was sure there would be swimming pools filled with her sombreness. it was so fucking stupid that something so small could have such a large impact on her. she hated this about her dad. she hated him and still, she could never bring herself to speak up. she was weak, she was well aware of the fact, and she allowed herself to break down piece by piece because she was scared.
all her life she had known fear. she wasn't supposed to feel fear when it came to her fucking dad of all people but the mere sight of him made her heart race. so even when the door closes behind him and she ended the conversation with chris, she still felt like she couldn't breathe. she was gasping for air and there was no oxygen mask providing her what she so desperately needed.

chris walked towards the door as he heard the bell chiming, his chain dangling a little from the pace he was walking at. he opened the door and saw her in all her glory, looking more flawless than ever. he was genuinely surprised he didn't know who she was before he was partnered up with her. neither him nor his brothers knew of her presence and she was literally in their fucking class. he shook the thoughts from his mind quickly, allowing her to step inside.
"hey," he smiled at her, leading her to the living room where she could already see the sprawled out paper and textbooks for their granted subject.
"hi," she mumbled mindlessly, observing the room with curious eyes that had chris holding back a slight laugh.
he took a seat on the couch and gestured for her to follow, pretending he didn't notice the way she purposely maintained a good amount of distance between them. her hands were back to picking at her nails and he frowned.
"do me a favour, pass me that textbook please?" he pointed at a book on the floor and she sighed slowly.
she picked it up and rolled her eyes to herself as she took in the fact that it was significantly closer to him and he could have easily gotten it himself. he knew he was being stupid but she wasn't picking at her skin anymore so he found himself believing it was worth it.
"so how do you want to do this?" he questioned, toying with the strings of his sweatpants as he observed her face for an answer.
she turned away from his gaze, not wanting to meet his eyes as she spoke, "i'm not fussed, whatever you want."
"you really like giving me nothing to work with," he laughed a little at her short and very undetailed answers throughout.
good. she found herself thinking before she brushed aside her thoughts and faced him to offer a slight shrug of her shoulders.
"okay... i was thinking we could do it like more of an artistic approach instead of just talking at the class. you any good at art?" he studied her as he spoke, eyes never leaving her.
"i'm okay," she told him simply.
lie. art had been one of her escapes for as long as she could remember. she thoroughly enjoyed seeing her ideas come to life with the swipe of a pencil or the stroke of a brush. it made her feel part of something without having to actually involve herself. her bedroom at home was filled with her art pieces yet here she was, hiding yet another factor about herself because why did anyone need to know a single thing about her?
"okay is good enough," he smiled softly before he continued, "should we start with the similarities and then go onto the differences like the basic structure?"
she nodded her head without even truly understanding what he asked her. she wasn't paying attention. she couldn’t bring herself to pay attention but she still sat beside him on the floor when he started to set out a plain sheet of A3.
"if we're going to do this together, i don't wanna be bored out of my fucking mind," he groaned, pausing his typing on his macbook, "tell me about yourself miss i sit at the back of the class and barely speak."
there it was. one of the reasons she preferred working alone. when she was alone, she didn't need to allow another person to get to know her. when she was alone it was just her and her focus on the work. but she was not alone and chris was smiling at her expectantly. it was too bad she didn't know how to talk about herself or talk at all, for that matter.
"look... this is just a project i'm doing for my final grade. i'm not here to make friends," the initial stab followed by the twist when she saw chris' expression drop for the first time since she had spoken to him.
"i know things about people who aren't my friends," he pushed with a teasing grin; did this boy seriously not know how to take a hint?
"what do you want to know?" her eyebrows furrowed together because she couldn't see why someone would want to dig deep into her of all people.
"night or day person?" the query wasn't really what she was expecting so it took her by surprise and she took a moment or so before she fully comprehended it.
"night," was the short reply he received and well, it made a lot of sense in his head despite barely knowing her.
"i can't even act surprised," he pointed out and she furrowed her brows at him again.
he chuckled at her expression before explaining himself, "you don't seem like the type to love sunshine and all that kind of stuff."
how was it that he was able to read her so easily when they had only just met? it scared her. people weren't meant to read her. this was all a bad idea.
"this is a stupid conversation," another shut down but chris paid attention to the way she continuously refused to hold any form of eye contact with him, almost as though her eyes would share every word she didn't dare speak.
"why do you do that?" he found himself pondering aloud before he could realise what he was doing and take it back.
"do what?" she stared at the floor, burning holes into it with her eyes and only proving chris' point further.
"you don't hold eye contact," he commented and she froze because that was just yet another thing he had learnt about her. why the fuck was he so attentive?
"maybe i just don't want to?" not entirely a lie and certainly not the full truth but it would make do for now.
he stayed silent and she used that as a means of returning to the project, acting oblivious to the way she could feel his eyes trained on her. eventually, he seemed to understand she wasn't going to entertain him and so he got back to work, minimal chatter about the project being the only source of noise in the overbearing silence.
and then she left, as quickly as she arrived and with the same minimal words. she didn't look back when she existed the door and she didn't look through her car window to see if chris was still standing on the front porch. he decided to head back inside when he could no longer view her car and found his brothers who he knew would have at least a question or two.
"how was your date?" nick asked from his seat on one of the stools in the kitchen, a teasing smile planted across his face.
"was she everything you expected and more?" matt giggled alongside him and chris actually groaned out of frustration.
he had told matt and nick she was pretty. it wasn't a lie; it didn't take a genius to realise as such so he had no idea why they were acting like him stating the obvious was the end of the world and him confessing his love. they hadn't shut up about her since chris and her got partnered together and even more so since she arrived at their house, messaging ridiculous things on their groupchat.
"it wasn't a date," he rolled his eyes, taking a seat beside nick and stealing some of his fries in the process.
"so it was bad?" matt pushed and chris threw a fry at him.
"she doesn't talk much, short as fuck answers and only trying to talk about the actual project. it's like talking to a brick wall," he recounted earnestly.
"maybe you're just boring," nick shrugged, earning him a loud scoff from chris.
"maybe she just doesn't like people," matt said something a little more sensible but it also made chris frown because it sounded rather genuine.
it actually made a lot of sense; from the way he'd never heard her so much as speak even though it was approaching the end of high school entirely and the way she attempted to ignore every last friendly approach he tried. yet at the same time, he knew there was something beyond what met the eyes and he thought if he dug deep enough, he would actually find the treasure beneath.
and then his phone vibrated.
aluna🌙
sorry did i leave a bracelet at your house? i think i was playing around with it and forgot to pick it up on my way out
chris (bio)
hold on let me check for you
aluna🌙
okay thanks
chris (bio)
yeah there's this charm one which is definitely not any of ours
aluna🌙
shit i'm sorry
chris (bio)
no you're good! i'll bring it to school tomorrow
aluna🌙
we don't have bio tomorrow
chris (bio)
don't worry i'll find you :)
aluna🌙
okay
chris returned to the kitchen and laughed a little at his brothers' confused glances, "she forgot her bracelet."
"more of an excuse to talk to her," nick beamed and chris shook his head fondly, slipping the bracelet between his fingers and studying the charms closely.
he wondered if there was a story behind them, a reason for those specific charms to have been selected. there were two stars which make the most sense to him. there was also a paint palette and he smiled at that; he guessed she was in tune with art after all. what confused him the most was the little lightbulb. it was very small, barely there, yet he felt like it stuck out the most. it was in the centre and looked the oldest. he was probably reading too much into it but he was one to dwell on things so just maybe it was in his nature.
he spent a lot of the rest of the day examining the charms, far longer than he would like to admit. she just intrigued him, he wanted to know more about her, what was beneath that mask she slipped on so easily. he twisted the bracelet in his hands before he slid it onto his wrist, thankful for the adjustability, in the hopes that he would not forget to take it to school the following day.

❛ ━━・❪ ִ ࣪𖤐 ❫ ・━━ ❜
there's a saying that claims there's always light at the end of a dark tunnel. aluna used to believe in it when she was a little girl, sneaking onto her rooftop and wishing on the shooting stars for it to become a reality. as she grew older, she realised there wasn't actually a light and the illumination she craved was merely that, a craving that the universe was refusing to fulfil. the wishful thinking soon turned to detest and she learned to despise the idea of something or someone pulling her out of the god-forsaken pit she had fallen into as a mere child.
so now, she stuck to herself. she could not find the light in others if there were no others. it was simply her against the world and every little thing inside of it. people did not recognise the name aluna nor care to try. she walked the hallways alone with her head low, never attended any school games or functions and stuck to the back of the class as best as she could. the very few times she had been partnered with someone to work with, she managed to get herself out of it and the individual was granted a new partner, thus allowing her to work alone. the way she preferred.
yet here she stood, a pleading expression capturing her features as she tried to convince her teacher to work alone for what felt like the millionth time that year. a brief sigh escaped her lips at the sympathetic refusal, something along the lines of the project showcasing an element of communication that was apparently required for the final grade.
"i'm sorry miss sanchez, i normally make exceptions for you but this is one time i can't. i'm afraid you'll be assigned a partner just like everyone else," her teacher's smile was supposed to be reassuring but it just made her heart feel heavier than it already did.
aluna dejectedly made her way to her seat, all the way at the back, and waited around for the rest of her class to arrive. she observed the way she always tended to as each individual walked in, some alone and others accompanied by people. her eyes landed on all she could including the set of triplets that she had always felt a little taken aback at, no matter how many times she saw them. they were laughing, they often were if they were not bickering, and the one she had identified as chris rolled his eyes at nick but it was paired with a fond and unavoidable glimmer.
"okay we're all here, excellent! i know you've all been awake late at night excited for this moment, that's right, it's time to assign partners. remember, absolutely no switching and i have a zero-tolerance policy for lack of teamwork. i want both of you working on the project and putting your all into this. the project as you may recall counts towards your final grade," mrs david rambled, an eager grin on her face that aluna could seem to understand for even a moment.
aluna didn't pay attention to her teacher again until she started assigning the partners and she stumbled across her name, "so miss sanchez and mr sturniolo, chris that is."
aluna pressed her eyes shut for a minimal second before she opened them, meeting chris' gaze across the classroom and trying her hardest to return the bright smile he offered her. then, her eyes dropped to the desk in front of her, shutting the world out until she heard the scraping of chairs and realised everyone was either sitting with their partners or making their way.
chris approached her with a smile, too large of a smile for her and she groaned internally before picking up her bag from the seat beside her and dropping it to the floor. he situated himself in the now vacant seat instantly and turned to her as he ran his dainty fingers through his mess of brown hair atop his head.
"aluna right?" he asked her easily and she nodded her head in response, not finding it within herself to verbally reply.
"so i think she said our focus was on DNA and RNA, shouldn't be that bad," he shrugged, ignoring her lack of enthusiasm without so much as a slight shift in his demeanour.
"mhm," aluna hummed softly, mentally cursing herself.
she wanted to respond like a normal fucking person, to engage in the conversation and appear as though she wasn't a complete and utter loser but she was already struggling. she genuinely didn't remember the last time she put effort into another person. she had always been closed off and speaking to others was just not her forte, if anything it was quite the opposite. normality for her was her own company, not having to make small talk with people when it was obvious they had very little to nothing in common.
"so would you like to work on the project at my place or yours? i don't mind either way but if it as my place, just know my brothers will probably be annoying as fuck," he laughed as he glanced at his brothers yet aluna didn't so much as laugh for the sake of courtesy.
even with her silence, chris' smile didn't seem to falter. if she was being completely honest, she didn't know how to feel about this joyous persona. it was too much happiness for her all at once and he wasn't even put off by the way she was giving him practically nothing.
she did however agree with one thing and felt the need to voice it, "your place works."
the very last thing she wanted was for someone to come to her house, school project or not. she had never had anyone come over, too afraid of what they may think of her based on what they see. it was easier this way, giving them nothing to work with so they were not disappointed or alarmed.
"can i get your number?" he pulled out his phone as though he didn't just ask what he did, as though it was normal and she raised her brows at him.
"what did you just say?" she questioned, a sudden sense of unease swarming through her at his words in a way she knew wasn't healthy but was too far gone to bother caring about.
he shook his head with a laugh, "your number, for the project, you know?"
oh. right. that made a lot more sense. she nodded her head and he handed her his phone so that she could enter the number. she saved it with her full name and he furrowed his brows a little.
"are you always this formal?" it was meant to be lighthearted but something inside of aluna snapped and she rolled her eyes at him.
"you asked for my number and i gave it," she deadpanned and he raised his hands in surrender, a curious look taking over that made her skin crawl.
she felt like she was being scrutinised and she hated it. she felt too involved in something and it had barely been a few minutes. she knew it sounded ridiculous but she just could not help it. she shot her eyes to the ground, picking at her nails to surpress her discomfort.
"you shouldn't do that," he placed his hand atop hers and moved it away from its prior spot, making her jump and remove her hand from his sharply.
"don't fucking touch me," she said with a glare without meaning to and he widened his eyes at the tone, making her sigh inaudibly.
"shit i'm sorry, i wasn't even thinking. i didn't mean to make you uncomfortable i-" he stopped himself from going on, looking to the floor to save himself from the awkwardness.
and here she went again, ruining something else. stopping illumination before it became too bright for her to maintain. she didn't apologise for her tone even though she wanted to, the apology sat on her tongue but it tasted bitter. it reminded her of the countless, meaningless apologies she had received in the past and it made her tongue almost burn strangely. here was this boy who was trying to make her feel normal and treat her like a friend but all she was doing was shutting him out. she was closing the curtains to the point even the smallest bit of light couldn't seep through the gaps.
she looked around the classroom, watching as others conversed with their partners easily, without the fear of things going wrong before they had even begun. she turned to chris, the boy scrolling through his phone with an unreadable expression across his face. she did that to him. and she didn't even have it in herself to fix it. she instead waited as the seconds on the clock ticked by and turned into minutes before the period was at last over and she didn't have that repeated pounding in her head.
"i'll text you my address, does tomorrow work for you?" chris' voice came out of nowhere and she had to mask the surprise she felt, replacing it with a small nod of her head before rushing out of the classroom.
stay in the dark, don't let the light in.
it was almost a mantra, her life moto now and she sighed at the thoughts circling her head. she walked to the next period with a heavy head and a discomforting sensation tingling through her nerves. she had no fucking clue how she was going to survive an entire project with him.
