(226) The matrix chooses Megatron, not Orion Pax. This changes things. The civil war still explodes into world-ending violence, but this time, Orion Pax and Megatron are on the same side.
On the other hand, not all their enemies are unfamiliar. The oppressive status quo is now championed by familiar faces — mostly committed proponents of law and order like Prowl and Ultra Magnus.
Unfortunately for his alt-timeline companions and occasional old friends, Orion Pax takes his role as a member of the Autocon high command very, very seriously.

Young Titan
Primes do not live long. This is a fact that everyone on Cybertron has long come to understand. To take the Matrix is to become a martyr, an offering to the people to preserve Cybertron. No Prime has lived long... at least until Optimus.
Now millions of years old and nourished by war and millennia of memory, the Last of the Primes will show all of Cybertron what happens when a Prime is allowed to progress naturally.
(In short: Another funky jam Au for all yall. Enjoy)
━━━━━━ ⊙ ❖ ⊙ ━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⊙ ❖ ⊙
War followed them through time and space. There was no escape, not even on Earth. Part of Megatron wanted to stop, but how could he now? So many millennia at war with his foe ensured that there was simply no other choice but to win, to end this conflict.
Optimus Prime had exceeded his every expectation. In the beginning he had fully expected to have to throw his very spark into the war effort. Primes were strong when they were young. But ultimately, Megatron was living under the assumption that the war would come to a close when Optimus inevitably kicked the bucket. The Prime was too strong and too clever to be killed in battle. The most logical end for the war would have to then be when Optimus lived out his life as every Prime before him.
Primes never made it past a million years. Every single one of Optimus's predecessors all met their end long before the million year mark. There was no reason to think Optimus would be any different.
He really should have known his former brother would exceed expectations.
The war went on, and Optimus kept. On. Living.
Nothing kept him down. The Prime got back up and continued the war. Megatron waited, and as the cycles ticked by and the million year mark grew closer, he became more and more concerned. There was no waning in Optimus's power, nor did his mind seem to be deteriorating. If anything, he grew more cunning with time. It was a slow progression, but Megatron saw it. The way Optimus's passion dulled and his rage and empathy shifted. The war stopped being about them and instead became a concept.
Megatron fought, but as he did so, part of his drive changed. Optimus stopped looking at him with the rage of the archivist who was forced to raise a blade as cities burned. Now he watched simply, calmly even. He observed and did what was required. There was no true wrath there, only sorrow and the anger of something unnatural when Autobots and Decepticons alike fell in the line of duty. Megatron did everything in his power to bring out the rage he knew so well. He wanted to see Optimus seethe. He wanted to know that he was not the only one invested in their war. He had to be sure that he was no the only one feeling the loss, the anger, the desperation to win.
Few times did he manage to succeed in his goal. He could count on his digits the number of times Optimus raged as the war started to reach its grim conclusion. By the time the Allspark was sent away, the Prime no longer showed much of anything. He was stoic, unfeeling in the way one feels nothing for insects beneath their pedes. Against Megatron's fears, Optimus did not grow corrupt. Instead, he took his people to the stars and their war continued.
On and on it went, even on Earth. Then, shortly after the arrival of the Elite Guardsmech, things changed. Megatron sensed something was brewing long before, but when the Autobots fell to panic, he knew that whatever his spark warned him of was beginning to form.
Optimus vanished. Not a spark knew where he went. According to reports and what could be gathered from frantic Autobot patrols, the Prime had simply wandered off into the night and never come back. His signal was still active, but his Autobots were unable to trace his location. Megatron couldn't help but search. He reasoned it was to kill his foe while he was weak and alone, but deep down he knew it was because something big was happening. Weeks went by without any sign of him. Megatron was never one to write Optimus Prime off as dead after so many shattered expectations, but he couldn't help but wonder if his life had finally reached its end.
Three months after Optimus's disappearance, Soundwave reported the Autobots gathering around a point of interest. When the Nemesis reached the location in question, Megatron could hardly believe his optics. The Autobots swarmed the area, fortifying and guarding it with their lives. The basic structure of walls and other buildings was clear as day. Wires crept long exposed beams and energon crystals had been turned into liquid which pooled at the center of it all.
But more than that, what left Megatron in awe was the simple fact that spreading along the ground-
Was living metal.
━━━━━━
Ratchet had been with Optimus since the beginning. He watched his friend take on what was essentially martyrdom for the sake of their people. He watched Optimus come into being. He watched his friend turned Prime lead their people to war. And most notably, he watched the changes that occurred in the Prime as time passed.
He grew distant, and not necessarily in the manner of the corrupt. He still mourned the dead and he still felt rage for the loss of their world. But from what Ratchet saw, Optimus felt no solid connection to their faction or any direct function. He said he was a Prime for all of Cybertron, and despite fighting Megatron, to Ratchet it looked as though it were merely a force of habit rather than true conflict.
He cared, he loved, but he did so in a manner more akin to a watchful guardian vaguely displeased with the antics of sparklings. It was infuriating at times, and Ratchet was only able to confirm his friend was still in there when Optimus had moments of rage.
He sensed something in Optimus as he aged. Ratchet grew weaker, bitter, weighed down by aches and pains. Optimus on the other hand seemed to grow stronger. His power did not outright increase, but his spark readings came back stronger than ever and he seemed to be accumulating mass. He didn't get much taller after his initial transformation to Prime, but he got denser. He could put away energon like no one's business and the mech just seemed to gain a more oppressive presence with every passing vorn.
He asked Optimus about it. Optimus had no real answers.
"None have lived as long as I have. This is new, but it is right. I feel that soon I will find my true function. My design shall be made clear."
On and on it went. Times changed, war continued, and Optimus grew more and more imposing. Ratchet half expected him to combust or to lose his mind like many a Prime before him. Instead, a few years into their stay on Earth, Optimus vanished like smoke. He left a simple note telling Ratchet that they would be meeting soon, but that was all. Weeks of frantic searching yielded nothing... at least until they found the only place on the planet where living metal creeped across rock and soil.
Ratchet led the team there, Ultra Magus serving alongside them. When they arrived, they did not know what they were looking at. The beginnings of buildings were forming on their own, and they were quite obviously of Cybertronian origin. Energon gathered on the ground in pools and ran through fuel lines imbedded in the very earth beneath their pedes. The ground itself shifted as they stepped upon it, wires crept from cracks to brush against them.
The land itself was greeting them, and the further into the strange collection of half finished structures they wandered, the more and more familiar it all felt. Ratchet really wasn't sure what he should have expected, but it most certainly was not the frame, or at least what remained of Optimus Prime's frame, sprawled out on the ground connected to a million and one wires. The Prime's spark was not in its chamber, instead it was contained by a structure just beyond what looked to be Optimus's corpse. It thrummed and flared, just as bright and active as ever. The wires continued to run along their frames, the ground shifted beneath them, a gentle rumbling greeting them.
Ratchet looked on, and he did not feel grief. His Prime was not dead. He was welcoming them.
"Optimus greets you."
A voice spoke and that was when Ratchet and the rest saw the true purpose of the place before them. A newbuild, one whose paint still gleamed with the freshness of the newly forged stood before them. A brand new life, a phenomenon that had not been witnessed since the Exodus. Others were developing, their sparks connecting to the living metal all around. This place was a hotspot, and life was forming right before their optics.
"He is happy to see you."
The newbuild smiled, and Ratchet was unsure whether to laugh or to cry. Of course Optimus would do something like this.
Of course he would turn himself into a fragging Titan.

pairing sparkling blurb thingy: Optimus Prime/Prowl
(if you're surprised, you shouldn't be)
The only thing surprising about this is how long it took you to send it XD I was waiting for it from the second I posted about em
ANYWAY! Optimus is the one carrying, and this sheltered little goody two shoes had no idea about interfacing til after landing on earth. He kinda got addicted to it: it just always felt so warm, Prowl was always gentle and made him feel more loved and accepted than anyone ever had before, and he could never get enough of that feeling. It's no surprise he eventually ends up sparked
He's baffled by the concept at first, once Ratchet gives him the news after a standard tune up. There's something growing inside him?! An entire other person, a full cybertronian bot? How?! How can that be? The only way for mecha to come to life is via the Allspark vault on Cybertron, and now the Allspark shards scattered across this planet. He doesn't have any access to that, so how can this be? Error 404, does not compute
Once he gets over the shock and the reality settles in tho, he's incredibly excited. And nervous. This is a huge honor and responsibility, he thinks: if he's making a person then he owes it to them to give them the best possible life! He needs to do everything right! He downloads every single tiny scrap of information he can find about sparklings, and pesters Ratchet with literally hundreds of questions. How much should he recharge, how much should he fuel, does he need to be careful transforming? What's the necessary amount of exercise? He probably shouldn't be fighting decepticons, right? How long will he need to spend building them? Is he going to need to download schematics? What about-
He's the most nervous dedicated carrier Ratchet's seen in a long time 🤭 granted, he's the only carrier Ratchet's seen in a long time. He just wants to do right by his baby, even if he still hasn't quite conceptualized what a baby is.
The first time the sparkling kicks he runs to Ratchet in a panic thinking they're trying to escape early. Ratchet has to gently explain that that's normal, it means they're developing into a healthy newspark. Prowl mentions that there's an old superstition that the first time a sparkling kicks, it means they want their carrier to know they're there, and that makes Optimus light up in excitement. Their creation already likes him! That's great! Everytime the baby kicks from then on to the emergence, he always stop what he's doing to touch his belly and push as much acknowledgment and affection through their budding sparkbond. He wants them to know that he's there, too! He'll always be here for them 💖 and when he finds out that the sparkling will be able to hear voices after a certain development point, he makes it a part of his daily routine to ask Prowl to say hello to them. He talks to them all the time, constantly, telling them about anything and everything. He gets so used to having them kicking in his belly and connected to his spark, he can't get to sleep without one servo on his middle, gently stroking it and humming to the little one.
When they're born, Optimus isn't at all prepared for the pain. It's the worst thing he's ever had to endure--not even getting literally killed by Megatron could compare. In all his time in service to the elite guard and protecting earth, he'd never rated anything on the pain scale more than a 7.5. Labor is a strong 15. He's full on ugly crying and begging Ratchet to make it stop, to GET. IT. OUT!! It lasts nearly 20 hours and Prowl is as supportive as he can be, doing everything demanded of him with lethal efficiency and doing everything in his power to keep his mate comfortable.
When the sparkling finally arrives, they're thankfully healthy. All of Optimus's careful prep and precautions ensured they're born without any complications 😊 a beautiful blue and gold sparkling, perfectly precious. They come out screaming, loudly announcing to everyone that they are not happy about being thrust into a world that's so cold and bright and scary! Once they're cleaned and not so slimy-sticky anymore, Prowl gently helps Optimus sit up so he can hold their newspark. He kinda freezes up, optics wider than they've ever been and servos trembling as they're placed into his arms. They're still squalling, afraid and overstimulated, and he's not sure what to do. Instinct takes over after a moment though, and he cuddles them closer against his chassis. Bouncing them as gently as he can, shushing them with the promise of, "I'm here, I- I'm here! It's me, i-it's me, I'm right here, it's ok... shhhhh..."
And sure enough, that's enough. Hearing their carrier's familiar voice, snuggled close against his pulsing spark, they start to calm down. He watches with wonder as they squirm closer, murring as their tiny newborn systems begin to settle. Their optics squint open for the first time, blurry and unseeing but the most beautiful shade of blue, tiny glossa poking out and beginning to root for their first meal.
Optimus is surprised when he suddenly bursts into tears. He doesn't know why he's crying. He doesn't know where this flood of tears came from but he's just so overwhelmed with emotion he just can't stop. He snuggles them close and curls around them as much as he can, sobbing and blubbering and kissing their little helm over and over again. He's just so happy to finally have them here, he had no idea it was possible to love something like this, to love something this much. He'd of course loved them while they were growing inside of him, but this is so much different somehow. Seeing them so tiny and precious in his arms has brought an entirely new type of adoration bubbling to the surface, and he never, ever wants to let go of this feeling 💖

For Secret of the Primacy: I don't know if anyone else has asked this, but does Optimus accept Megatron's request? If he does, how to the other Decepticons and Autobots react? If he doesn't, what is Megatron's reaction? Does Optimus take his time to answer?
(Feel free to delete this if someone has already asked/requested something like this.)
Ah yes, an excuse to write for this au. Fantastic.
Previous part here.
━━━━━━ ⊙ ❖ ⊙ ━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⊙ ❖ ⊙
Megatron's offer was a... delicate thing for Optimus to consider. Megatron was his life long foe. Adhering to his request and coming to the Nemesis was akin to stepping into a burning building and praying to any watching higher power that a beam didn't drop on his helm and kill him. But failure to comply was not only an emotional risk, but also a lost opportunity. If he went with Megatron, he would potentially gain access to Decepticon data as well as information regarding his Sire. It was a win for him, and yet it left him suspicious. What did Megatron want?
Out under the stars, Optimus considered in silence until he decided to simply ask.
Optimus: What do you desire from me in return.
Megatron: As I already said, I wish to know more of your origin.
Optimus: You know everything of relevance. What is it you truly seek?
Megatron: Confirmation, or perhaps closure. I am not unfeeling, Prime.
Optimus hesitated, his logical processors left running through countless scenarios as he contemplated. This could end horribly very very quickly. And yet... the offer of information and the chance before him could not be overlooked. Megatron would have killed him already if that was what he wanted. The warlord was looking to gain something from their interactions, and Optimus highly doubted keeping him as a hostage was the full plan. He was, at his core, replaceable. Not to mention if need be, he could still do severe damage to the Nemesis before being brought down.
It was a logical and relatively sound offer. Thus, Optimus requested a day to prepare, and they went their separate ways with a place and a time to meet. Optimus returned to his team and informed them that he would be going on a week long scouting mission and due to the distance, would largely be out of contact. Ratchet wasn't pleased, Arcee wasn't either. Bulkhead and Bumblebee were confused more than anything. But none present wanted to deny Optimus what they assumed was a poor attempt to ask for some alone time. To them, there was no other mech who could use a break more than their Prime.
Ratchet prepared Optimus some rations and requested an update daily. Arcee slipped Optimus a hidden blade to keep in his arm guard in the event that something happened. Bulkhead patted Optimus on the back and wished him well, and Bumblebee gave his Sire a hug. It was a simple but heartfelt farewell for what the team assumed was a simple trip. Guilt plagued Optimus's mind as he elected to not tell them of his plans. They would never allow him to leave, at least not with Megatron. This he needed to do alone. It was dangerous, but in the worst case scenario, he could always call for a ground bridge, or even fight his way out. He'd been on the Nemesis before, and he could hold his own for a limited amount of time against the Decepticons. Megatron was a mech of honor when he felt like it.
It was risky, but there was much to be gained... at least, that was his hope.
He made his way to the designated meeting point even though he knew the team would worry the moment they saw his signature moving far faster than it should have. Once he was at the meeting place, Megatron emerged from a ground bridge and beckoned him to follow with a smile. It was unnerving and Optimus quietly readied his hidden blade just in case things fell apart. However, after venting deeply, he followed Megatron through the portal with only a quick message back to Ratchet.
[[If this doesn't work, I hope you will forgive me. I want to know the truth, and if all goes well, I will gather other vital information as well. Thank you for everything Ratchet. I pray that I will return to you soon.]]
With his message sent, Optimus followed his enemy and stepped aboard the Nemesis. Unease rattled his spark as Megatron smiled and led the way to the Command deck. Optimus did not know what he should have expected, but a vial of sedatives to the neck was not on his list of potential outcomes. He wheezed and his vision blurred, but before he lost consciousness, Arcee's gifted blade found its mark, slashing across Megatron's face even as Optimus was forced into recharge.
When he returned to consciousness, he was strapped down on an examination table and a series of cables connected to his processors through ports normally well hidden. He was too sluggish to move and his whole frame ached. All he was able to do was listen as Megatron began to make plans with Shockwave and Knockout.
Megatron: Does he possess the correct coding?
Knockout: Surprisingly, yes. Despite his physical age and maturity, his coding has not completed its development. He could still theoretically be moved from one frame to another-
Megatron: Excellent. Get that relic out of him and prepare to transfer his spark to a protoform. Ensure the protoform in question is adequately adjusted.
Knockout: My Lord, I will gladly obey, but you must realize that tampering with the relic is highly dangerous! Not to mention moving him to a new frame could cause incredible stress-!
Megatron: What are the issues that concern you, Doctor?
Knockout: The Matrix is tied to him. Trying to remove it could kill him! If you want him dead then by all means go forward with this plan, but if you want a live Prime, he needs that relic at least until I can create a stabilizer to replace it.
Megatron: Very well. Leave the relic until there is a way to remove it. Anything else?
Knockout: He may have the correct coding, but putting him in a protoform is just asking for all sorts of mutations. He needs a stabilizing element, a CNA contribution of some sort considering there are no hot spots for him to go roll in.
Megatron: Then find someone aboard the Nemesis. I want him and that relic dealt with before the cycle's end!
Optimus watched in horror as Megatron grinned down at him. Knockout simply sighed and raised a blade with a murmur about not wanting to damage such a fine frame.
Optimus Prime finally came to fully understand just what his Sire endured as he was picked to pieces for a purpose he did not know. Memory faded in and out as the Doctor worked, but all the while Optimus recalled searching for Ratchet, desperately hoping the mech who treated him so tenderly would come save him. His attempts to call to the team were fruitless, and in his moments of awareness, he noted Knockout had removed his tracker or otherwise blocked the team's ability to find him. He was stranded and alone.
What a foolish decision it was to come to the Nemesis. He regretted it more with every moment and only found himself aware enough to actually process data once more when he came online in a far smaller frame. He was without many features, his new body not yet adjusted to his CNA. The Matrix wrapped around him almost like a ribcage in order to fit his small form. But aside from a few familiar features such as his finials, he also noted a few smaller adjustments, namely the duel datacables that he sensed distantly on his back.
He could not speak, he could not act. Alone and weakened, all he could do was go limp when Soundwave and Megatron came to look him over.
"He has accepted your CNA well. Take care of him Soundwave. Orion's sparkling should be preserved at all costs. I refuse to allow his memory to fade."
Soundwave collected Optimus and carried him as if he weighed nothing. Optimus, having endured his forced reformat, merely groaned. Of course, Megatron was not to be trusted. What a fool he was to even believe in a vague concept of honor. Megatron was always obsessed with his Sire. Was it really a surprise that he would try to claim what little remained of Orion Pax? He was lucky to be alive...
Soundwave took him away, and before Optimus knew it, a new schedule formed for him. He did not fully understand, but the warlord, seemingly drunk on whatever the dark energon did to him, had fully devoted himself to preserving that which remained of Orion. Megatron held no love for him. Instead, the Decepticon instructed Soundwave to tend to Optimus. That tending came... with adjustments. Every cycle he was trained in the craft of the spymaster and dutifully educated in the ways of the original Decepticon creed. Soundwave was not loving or affectionate, but he was a devoted teacher.
Cycle in and cycle out, Optimus obeyed. He couldn't fight, not when his very frame seemed so frail. He could not trust his limbs, nor could he trust his mind without wondering if his thoughts were influenced by the Matrix or Soundwave's teaching. He'd fallen for Megatron's trap, and now he remained until the warlord grew tired of him. He could only hope his team were safe and that they could continue the fight without his aid.
Locked on the Nemesis in a frame not his own, Optimus learned. And given time, he learned one important skill.
He learned to bide his time and scheme.
