“The last time someone told me that, they ended up never coming back after I covered for them.” He pointed out, his lips pressed together as tightly as possible in an attempt to conceal his emotions. Of course, he knew MJ knew what he was talking about -- but that didn’t mean he wanted to talk about it.

That promise wasn’t as reassuring as Ned suspected it was meant to be. Instead a chill ran down his spine as he anticipated what they were about to walk into. “Yeah, yeah. I will. I’m not scared,” He scoffed. “Peter’s alright though right?”

   “Well– yeah it pays, but it’s not like a bunch of money or anything.” Peter stated with a nonchalant shrug of his shoulders. “‘Cause it’s still technically an internship, I gotta be payed about the same as a regular internship.” Glancing up from his notes to meet his friend’s gaze, Peter continued, “I mean, imagine May finding out I’m getting a ton of money from an internship, she’d know something is up.” 

“Yeah, yeah -- that makes sense,” he nodded, twisting his lips together as he thought about it some more. “So the other Avengers -- they get paid then? Or are they out there with secret lives working regular jobs like being a doctor and stuff. And who actually pays  you guys?”

Peter raised an eyebrow, almost unsure about what Ned meant by the question, before remembering that May HAD realized something new in the past few weeks. He hadn’t forgotten (he couldn’t forget), but the question caught him off guard. “Oh, I forgot to tell you. She, uh, she found out. She figured out who I am. It was right after Mr. Stark gave the suit back. I put it on, and then she SAW.” Ned knew how much he hadn’t wanted her to find out about it.

“Things sorta got out of hand after that, but I think we worked it out. She’s just-she’s worried about me.”

Ned felt his jaw go slack, his eyes eyes going wide as Peter explained. If May knew, no wonder she was acting so differently. Ned knew how much he worried about his friend after he finally realized just how dangerous this was for Peter, he could only imagine what May went through every time Peter left the house.  

“Oh my god, Peter. What’d she say? Was she pissed? Did she try to ground you!? Oh no, is she mad at me? Is that one of the reasons she’s being weird around me? She probably doesn’t trust me now! Does she know I know?”

Ned hurried to catch up with the girl walking down the street. He recognized her from a picture of her with Peter and Mr. Stark on Peter’s phone. Maybe a bit naively, he had asked his friend if this was his girlfriend when he’d found it. “Hey, I’m Ned. I’m Peter Parker’s friend.” That ... wasn’t the best way to introduce himself probably, but it worked.

It had been years.  

Years since he’d distracted the bus to let Peter leave unnoticed so he could go after that spaceship. Years since he’d had to tell May that Peter left the bus on the way home, and that he hadn’t heard from him since. Years since he watched his father and his sister turn to dust right before his eyes in the middle of a family dinner while he was busy freaking out about Peter, and everything that had happened in New York.  

He’d heard stories that a lot of the Avengers were dead. Tony Stark himself had come to talk to May and confirmed that Peter was one of them. And now the world was forced to move on. But how did you move on when literally have the population DISAPPEARED. 

Then one day-- everything changed. People were suddenly coming home. People who had been dead for years.  

He didn’t want to believe it -- didn’t want to get his hopes up. He couldn’t.  

Despite that, he still found himself sprinting as fast as he could toward home as soon as he heard the whispering and didn’t have to go far because he slammed right into Peter.  

“Peter -- Oh, my god. Peter, is that -- Is that really you!?”

 Ned bolted from the school as soon as he got caught in the library, his cheeks burning red, knowing that he now had a teacher who thought he’d snuck out of the dance to look at porn. He’d always been known as one of the weird kids, but that was SUPER weird. 

He only considered going home for a minute before he immediately started to head towards Peter’s. As if there was ever any other option. He needed to know Peter was okay, and he needed to know like... thirty minutes ago.

“ Peter... Does your aunt know something? ”  She’d been acting weird lately -- at least Ned thought she was acting weird. Something was definitely off. Give him a computer, and he could take it apart and put it back together again in minutes, and explain every part’s function in great detail. Stick a human being in front of him that wasn’t Peter, or his sister -- and sometimes even with them -- he was completely clueless. Reading people just wasn’t his strong suit. 

But he was fairly sure that something was definitely off with Peter’s aunt the last couple times he’d seen her.
