A little note as I prep for my law exam… I asked my law professor about writing and AI and while I can’t say the answer surprised me I also can’t deny the sinking feeling it gives me.

He said AI will inevitably become ingrained in the craft, it will be a tool no more than photoshop is to photographers or 3D modeling is to architects. The difference between theft and creation lies in “the sweat of the brow” the degree of effort put in by the human, the authorship still solely residing with the writer.

And yet a part of me will never accept this. AI was trained on stolen writing, AI limits the critical thinking process and natural fermentation of ideas, AI weakens our ability to think beyond and practice our craft.

AI destroys you as a writer.

So for all my newer writers out there— for all those saying it’s inevitable or it’s faster or it’s useful when you’re stuck in writers block— you’re not wrong. But that doesn’t make it right, and will never make you a better writer where it counts. And if you feel tempted or feel like you’re gone too far simply close your laptop and pick up a pen and go back to the beginning.
