“that’s it, yuri! you’re doing so well.”
“i- i’m falling!”
“i won’t let you. keep going.”
small hands gripped onto pale fingers like they were his lifeline. two gossiping mothers watched over their sons as blades scraped against the thick ice of the small skating rink on a winter afternoon, blue eyes following her teenager as cold hands tucked further into his waiting coat. he always seemed happiest leading the young boy around. long, winter-washed hair flowed behind them as the two boys spun and spun until the dizziness set in, and viktor stopped them before they both fell over.
a genuine laugh filled the empty rink, and blue eyes disappeared as a grin formed over delicate features, causing yuri’s wide eyes to light up.
“you’re getting better, yuri! soon enough i’ll be able to let go.”
the dark haired boy gripped the hands a little bit tighter. “but i don’t want you to let go…”
the teenager balanced on his blades as he crouched down so that they were at eye level. he had a warm expression on his face, and even if yuri didn’t realize the exact term, his very first crush belonged to viktor. he thought he was beautiful.
“then i won’t. i’ll hold your hands for however long you want me to.”
“will you hold them forever?”
“of course i will. i’ll never let go!”
yuri’s entire face lit up at that. he wrapped his short arms around viktor as his cold nose pressed into his chest, a head of messy black hair all over the place.
“does this mean we’ll get married? mommy told me that getting married means you’re together forever.”
another chuckle rose from the teenager’s chest as he worked on smoothing the black hair back into place. he loved coming here to see yuri. viktor was always practicing and constantly surrounded by adults. it made him feel at ease to be around the young boy who had nothing but pure intentions. he didn’t expect him to do this or that; other than marrying him, of course.
“we can get married when you’re older. but you have to ask me in a cute way!”
the young boy pulled back from him with all of his teeth showing off, nodding solemnly to seal his promise.
“i will!”

the next week was valentine’s day. yuri’s elementary class made crafts, as per every holiday. he made one for his mom, one for his dad, sister, and viktor, though his was a bit different than the others. the day came when it was time for skate practice, and yuri’s mom briefly wondered if she had ever seen her son so excited to rush out the door.
he spotted the teenager’s long ponytail as soon as he stepped into the rink, and his mother barely collected his winter coat before the young boy took off to the other side.
“viktor!”
yuri grabbed the larger hands, pulling at them with an excited smile as he shoved the folded pink paper into his hands. it opened up into a heart, and the teacher had punched a hole into the side to hang a small box of candy hearts with a bread tie. viktor opened it up hastily at the boy’s urgency to “open it, open it!”
an impossibly wide smile filled the teenager’s expression. he pulled him up into his arms, giving him a kiss on the cheek as he laid the paper on the barrier that read a crooked, “will you marry me?”
“yes, yuri. i’ll marry you! i thought you’d never ask~ i waited so long.”
“we’ll stay together forever now, right?” the young boy asked hopefully, clinging to his neck so he didn’t fall. he wouldn’t have, anyway. viktor had a hold of him, as always.
“mmhm! forever and ever.”
