Surrealist art explores the unconscious mind, liminal spaces, and symbolic imagery. I started this as a way to document and share my faves.

Aroundfish (1926) Paul Klee, oil on canvas, 46.3 x 64.1 cm
This cryptic painting [...] was among several of his works that the Nazi government included in their official “degenerate art” exhibitions and derided as childlike, disorderly, and confused. Yet it was precisely these qualities—the emulation of children’s art, the collage-like approach to building pictures, and the resistance to interpretation—that had attracted the Surrealists to Klee’s witty, lyrical artworks a decade earlier.

Being With (Être Avec) (1946) Roberto Matta, oil on canvas, 221 × 457.2 cm
Like many artists at the time, Matta expressed distress at the state of the world, one ravaged by World War II. His paintings and drawings of the mid-to-late 1940s (called "social morphologies") address the societal crisis that he felt he was "being with," as the title of this painting suggests.

The Rock (1944-48) Peter Blume, oil on canvas, 146.4 × 188.9 cm
A startling juxtaposition of images, The Rock depicts a shattered red rock resting on top of a base that is being demolished by workers below. Peter Blume labored for years to complete this painting, which was commissioned in 1939 by the Edgar Kaufmann family for Fallingwater, their Frank Lloyd Wright–designed home in Pennsylvania. Although the complex imagery resists easy interpretation, it may point to devastation and reconstruction, reflecting the turbulence of World War II and its aftermath. In the end, The Rock proved too large for Fallingwater and it was never displayed there.
