the reason I dislike the words “sapphic” and “Achillean” (beyond the “girls write poetry boys fight war” of it) is that I took a class once on the fin de siecle in Europe that had an entire long section about how European men would go to the colonies and sexually exploit colonized men and boys while using the metaphor of Classical Greece to forgive themselves their own homosexuality on the basis that the power differential between colonizer and colonized maps onto the power differential inherent to classical pederasty. Which is, you know. Overtly racist. And I think we’ve got better options
