I've seen a lot of people say this and I don't know. Guess it depends on how much of an idiot you're thinking he is. Feral naked idiot who lights things on fire simply doesn't go with how Zelda or the people who know Link in game describe him. He doesn't do those things within the canon as much as some people desperately wish he did.

He definitely has a wild streak though. Purrah says he's the only one who would willingly launch himself out of the towers they built, he loves his food and I think, decided to live life to the fullest in his own quiet way. It feels like post shrine of resurrection he's an extremely chill, willing to do whatever type of person but ALWAYS has his role as Zelda's protector as his top priority.

Zelda has a wild streak too. She feels way more comfortable in nature and out exploring. It's why she decided to live in Hateno rather than have the castle restored. She's not stuffy and Link's personality perfectly complements this. They both have evolved their roles to suit themselves better but have not ditched them completely. Zelda is still a princess and Link is still a royal knight. It's part of their core identities. Another reason why the feral child image just doesn't fit.

I have tons of memes and comics saved of idiot BOTW Link because I think they're hilarious but those jokes and characterization are outside of canon. Which is fine! If we love something we memeify it. But Link isn't actually the meme, ya know? I just felt like commenting on the distinction.

I’m all for headcanons but it’s so funny everyone decided Link is a jackass idiot who runs around naked and sets stuff on fire when in reality he isn’t that way at all.

Yes, as a player you can talk to people naked and set stuff on fire (it’s hilarious to see the NPC’s reactions) and it’s so great the game lets you play like a gremlin if you want!

BUT—within the story and canon—Zelda describes him as noble. That is heart is good and true. In the games, the people of Hyrule come to him with their problems and he solves them. He’s figured out a zillion shrine problems (he’s far from stupid!). He’s good with animals. He takes his role of protector seriously. He’s a sturdy pillar and truly a wonderful person.

Generally I’d say that yes, TotK is better than Botw which is amazing—except one thing.

No it’s not botw’s bombs (rip bombs I love you) no it’s not the Champion abilities (loved those too)

…it’s the trees. The goddam trees don’t attack you in Botw. The first time it happened in TotK it scared the shit out of me. Now I just hate it.

Because listen. Sometimes I just want to enjoy the pretty nature in Zelda, okay? I want to pick mushrooms in the forest and look for honey combs in the rustling quiet. I want to camp by a lonely lake decorated with fireflies. I want to catch fish where no one can bother me.

In the Depths? Sure. Send the creepy trees. Fits the vibe, I get it. But not on the surface. I want pick my fucking apples in peace, alright?
