i already kind of got into this, but just as a sort of add on and a continuation of simmons and his endless bout of daddy issues -- his father also used to physically abuse him.

when he didn't like something simmons said (usually pertaining to a bit of information that made simmons seem smarter than him), he'd lash out. he'd yell and hit.

it didn't happen often -- every once in a blue moon, really, but it had a lasting effect.
