Apologies for the random reblog. I'm a Chinese person who happened to find this post. To answer your question: you might be referring to the symbol "×" (informally the letter "x") in place of the slash for western fandoms, which is also the convention for Japanese and Korean shippers, simultaneously indicating romantic relationship and psychosexual dynamics (top × bottom). Yes, in East Asian fandoms the order of names does indicate top/bottom. I'm surprised the English-speaking Sherlock fandom would have this discourse; the people who started it could either have been influenced by anime fandoms or were from those places and were confused by the western convention...? In East Asian fandoms, the pairing between characters A and B can be represented by shortened names AB and BA, but yes, each is viewed as a distinct ship from the other; the frequency of either usage you see solely correlates with the popularity of its associated interpretation (top/bottom) in the fandom. For example, in the Chinese/Japanese/Korean Sherlock fandoms, Johnlock can be either 福华/シャロジョン/셜존 or 华福/ジョンシャロ/존셜 (the order of components are in reverse), with the former always meaning top!Sherlock/bottom!John, which happens to be more popular in the East Asian fandoms, and vice versa. You may also find that many East Asian fan artists/writers on Twitter and other platforms tend to use the labels "S/J" and "J/S," for the same reason even though the slash doesn't have the same meaning in English circles.

There was a genuine discussion about renaming "Johnlock" to "Sherohn" in 2014 and whether the order of names signified who tops or bottoms.

It started out as a joke among friends as these things tend to do, but then it followed the usual trajectory of leaving containment and spiraling out of control due to people who didn't know about its' origin.

And there were, of course, death threats sent over it. Fandoms are a scary place, indeed.

Related off-topic but it’s so amusing to me that, while western shippers appear to still be in the early-stage era of “perpetuating fetishism by applying hetero stereotypes to same-sex pairings,” eastern shippers (particularly the Chinese), the ones who coined and spread “fujoshi,” are already playing 4D chess on the whole concept with stuff like “i perceive this male character as wholly feminized but he’s 100% a top with no butthole,” ironically realizing the subversion of gender as a social construct. Even developing specific terms for specific approaches (which is its own realm with pros and cons). It’s fetishism of its own kind with complex origins (and head-canons that distort the source material are loathsome regardless) but still such an intriguing phenomenon. Someone could seriously write a paper on that.

it’s something i see a lot in m/m pairings like a lot but for some reason people can’t help but be weird and take...lets say, two characters, both of the same height and build and damn near same skin tone and people will make one of them (the louder, more “obnoxious” one, more often than not) bigger, more muscular, and WAY darker while the other guy (cooler or more relaxed or silent type) will become smaller and paler and skinnier and shyer. they’ll twist and twist and twist characteristics of characters like this until they’re nigh unrecognizable for the sake of their own weird fetishes and likes and dislikes—and it’s deeply uncomfortable and racist in its own way. the idea that darker skin is inherently more aggressive or “dominant” and tied to masculinity while paleness is reserved for only skinny delicate looking things...like lol.

i need pepple to understand that in the first place leather has always been made from the byproducts of butchering animals for meat, otherwise the skin is just tossed and unused. there were some companies farming for leather for a while, particuarly alligator leather, but those were not the norm. peta did so much harm in their campaigns against leather as a concept (its not unethical. yoi get the skin when an animal dies. thats why most leather clothes in the usa are cow leather, bc thats the biggest meat animal here) that its almost impossible to buy anything "leather" that isnt made of plastic that it so fragile and shitty that the very Thread Holding It Together rips the fibers apart. it will last for maybe a year two if youre lucky, and wont biodegrade and was made out of something that isnt naturally occurring in the first place and is one of the biggest causes of pollution globally

Agreed (Doma arc is objectively especially out-of-character for him though); early manga is a good example of just how much their value systems truly align in ways that others simply cannot interfere (still do and increasingly so even later on).

Never going to get over the Yami Yugi / Seto Kaiba dynamic because there's something so fascinating about how Yami Yugi loves his friends so much but will always feel a little out of place because they're such good people while he has this fucked-up darkness inside him that would terrify them if he let it out too much. Just look at what happend when he lost Yugi in the Doma arc. None of their friends really knew how to act around him without Yugi there.

But you know who's totally fine with that Darkness? Seto Kaiba. They're always going to have a bond Yami Yugi can't have with anyone else.
