My Thoughts on Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire

So, I've finally seen Godzilla x Kong, and I have the urge for some real deep thoughts on how much I enjoyed this movie and why.

First of all, yeah, I loved the FUCK out of this movie. In fact, if I were asked to put the Legendary films on a list, I'd rank them as follows:

Kong: Skull Island Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire Godzilla King of the Monsters Godzilla (2014) Godzilla vs. Kong

Now let me explain why. For one thing, this film finally fixes the problem with the human characters in Legendary's series. Namely, that there's always way too many of them.

In Godzilla x Kong, we focus on four: Dr. Ilene Andrews, Jia, Trapper, and Bernie. Naturally, when you focus on a core human cast of four characters, you get more time to develop and play with them. Take it this way. In Godzilla vs. Kong, Bernie was a goddamn menace, the most annoying character in a sea of bullshit. In this film? He works as comedic relief and actually feels useful.

Of course, the human emotional core of the film is Ilene and Jia. Ilene, now adapted to motherhood, struggles to deal with the idea that she might have to let Jia go for her own happiness. Jia, on the other hand, directly parallels Kong. Like him, she struggles as the last of her tribe.

These are well-worn character arcs in film, but it works here. Additionally, I really like where the writers and actors take these arcs. Ilene doesn't have to choose between her work as a scientist and motherhood. She gets both. Jia's arc ends in a similar place.

But let me move to the real stars of the movie: the monsters. Because Godzilla x Kong really, REALLY succeeds in making the monsters real, approachable characters, and that's an incredible feat.

A lot of people have been comparing Godzilla x Kong to the old Showa Godzilla films. These comparisons mainly concern the silliness in those movies. However, Godzilla x Kong shares another similarity with those films: the large personalities behind the monsters.

In the Showa Godzilla films, every monster has a distinct personality carried through by the design, the writing, and the performance of the suit actors. This is a complicated process. Many Western audiences derided the corniness of old-school tokusatsu, but it works.

When you see Gigan's design and see the way his actor with the help of technicians and effects move, you know what kind of villain he is, for example. Godzilla x Kong utilizes its monsters in a similar way. The brilliance of not only the CGI artists and design team but the motion cap actors shines beautifully.

You would not believe how much of this film's runtime has no dialogue. We're just given entire arcs dedicated to Kong, Godzilla, Suko (the child ape), Skar King, and more. You can tell what each of these characters is thinking, feeling, processing, etc. through the performances and CGI alone.

That's impressive. In taking my own mother, who almost never pays attention or remembers films, she was never confused. She knew exactly what was happening, who these characters were, and what they were doing with zero exposition or dialogue. Let me tell you, that's a feat of filmmaking.

I really have to give special props to the actor and team behind Skar King. What a well-acted villain. Maybe it's the Furiosa preview before this movie, but he reminded me of an Ape Immortan Joe and Lion King's Scar. He's perfectly over-the-top.

I also have to credit the actors and team behind Shimo and Godzilla. Reptilian monsters like this are always harder to make relatable, especially compared to ape characters. The actors and artists behind these characters, though, manage to convey clear pain, wonder, confidence, and pride.

I also have to really give credit to all the filmmakers for conveying an entire ape culture, again, without dialogue, human exposition, or other crutches. The Skar King's kingdom of slaves and lackeys is communicated entirely through performances, art design, cinematography, and more.

Now that I've gushed, I do have some quibbles about the film. One is a problem I have with a lot of blockbusters. Near the end of the film, we get A LOT more exposition with the human characters that we really don't need. I wish filmmakers would just trust the audience more. Sure, explain things like pseudo-scientific aspects of cultures or things relevant to the character like Titan biology. But we don't need it for everything. I promise, your audience is smarter than you think.

Another problem I have is that, once again, we have way more focus on Kong's arc and story than Godzilla's. I don't understand why. Like Kong, Godzilla's the last of his kind. The stress of keeping the world at balance is constantly on his shoulders. There's plenty to work with here! So give us that! Give us a real character arc for the lizard already! The actors and artists behind him are really talented. What I would give for a Godzilla film that's just entirely like that scene between Serizawa and Godzilla in KOTM!

Now that I've quibbled, I can also say, yes, the fights are amazing and awesome and dumb in the best ways. Kong not only uses great traps but grabs that little ape and uses him like a fucking club against the Skar King's lackeys. Godzilla gores a giant crustacean with its own limbs.

I will not spoil the best fight scenes for you. You just have to watch the film for that, though. But I promise, the fight scenes don't get old, the composition is great, and you'll have a Hell of a time. Go into this film with Showa Godzilla in mind. Please don't be like critics and try to compare this to "superior" films like Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One. Godzilla x Kong is dumb, silly fun, but it also gives us really good examples of the art and skill behind the cast and crew.
