I love Angus more than anything on this earth. Every word out of his mouth is a blessing.
[id: a video featuring a still image of The Adventure Zone’s Angus McDonald, as drawn by Carey Pietsch. He’s a smiling young boy with glasses, a dark complexion, and fancy clothes. There is audio from Episode 13, and as Angus says “I did detective good enough to see through your horse shit” the words appear around him. end id]

They’re not talking.
That’s not what this is, Taako thinks as he makes another gesture. This isn’t talking; Davenport can’t talk, Taako has not established a system of communication with Davenport, and whatever meaning they’re getting out of the symbols their hands form is entirely arbitrary. He couldn’t explain what they’re trying to say to each other if anyone asked, and isn’t that the point?
The first one is a familiar gesture, idly traced out from across the room when Taako, Magnus, and Merle return with a relic. “Are you okay,” Davenport says without meaning to, without knowing. It’s the habit of almost one hundred years for Taako to say back, silently, “We’re okay.”
If anything, Taako is humoring the guy. Magnus elbows him and mutters that it’s not nice to mess with Davenport, but really? Davenport seems pretty pleased about getting a response, even if it’s meaningless. And there must be something in his face that’s telling, because Taako usually guesses what he’s after pretty closely. It’s harmless. It’s nothing. He doesn’t know why he’s so sure that it’s nothing.
Of all the languages they learn, the unspoken language is the one they use in every world. It’s practical for when they need to have a private conversation when strangers are present or when they need to be silent to avoid detection, but more than anything it’s a way to check in. When talking is hard, when the distance is too far, when everything is overwhelming and too much… it’s easiest to sign.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m okay.”
Madame Director sees them signing, once, while crossing their path. She pauses, looks stricken, and swiftly walks away with more urgency than before. Fuck, Taako thinks, maybe Magnus was right, maybe he’s been reading this wrong, but Davenport is looking after her, puzzled. He glances down at his hands, in the middle of forming a shape, and then back up at Taako. There’s a question in his eyes - do you know what this is - and Taako shrugs because something is there and his mind circles it like an empty pit.
It’s probably nothing. They’re not talking. They’re not saying anything at all.

Thank you dearly for 1,000 followers. If this post gets 1,000 likes, I’m going to draw every member of the ipre as Kermit the frog. I tried very hard to stop myself from making this dumbass challenge a possibility, but my impulse control is very low, and the government has yet to stop me send post

“A Lesson in Elvish” inspired by @marywhal‘s TAZ Fic Bury the Lead.
Apologies if the resolution is poor, I tried as best I could. I read this part in chapter eight and it really, really sat with me. The scene itself is straightforward, but they conjured very lovely images in my head that I wanted to illustrate. :>

The idea of Barry panicking and messing up “are you okay?!” And “don’t be afraid!” Makes me laugh because it’s extremely plausible that Griffin could actually have been trying to do that but completely forgot about that line.
Barry: Lup, I messed up, I tried to ask the boys “Are you okay?” and say “Don’t be afraid!” and I ended up yelling “Are you afraid?”
Barry: Magnus cried

taako can’t hear out of his left ear.
it’s not a big deal because he’s never been able to hear on that side, just like lup can’t hear things on her right, and it’s a running joke that they’re a matched set.
each deaf on one side of the head; just enough to be an annoyance in day-to-day life, maybe dangerous in the wrong situation, and so taako and lup do what they always do: they adapt.
taako always stands on the right, and lup stands on his left, and the two of them hold hands to make sure they stay close to each other. when someone says something quiet on the right, taako repeats it to lup; when an explosion rocks the stagecoach they’re stealing from the left side, lup describes it to taako.
by the time they join the ipre, it’s seamless.
none of the others notice right away, and even when it comes out that they translate the world for each other, it’s just a little idiosyncrasy. magnus learns to only talk to lup from her left side when taako isn’t around; lucretia makes sure she’s on taako’s right before starting a conversation. but it’s just lup and taako, taako and lup, the two of them each other’s ears and it’s so practiced after a lifetime together that they don’t even notice that they do it anymore.
lup’s lich form has perfect hearing, they find out. there’s something about being a magical construct of raw energy that tends to cause things like hearing impairments and physical forms to fall by the wayside.
she still stands on taako’s left.
they still interpret, even when she can hear perfectly, because by now they are two matched halves and it is as natural to them as air.
the rest of the ipre doesn’t notice anymore, either, nobody does – until there is a wall of harsh static and redacted memories and taako wakes up with nothing to his name but a stagecoach and a cooking show and an odd tendency to turn to his right and repeat phrases to thin air.
it’s hard for him to learn how to hear things on his left - and it shouldn’t be, he thinks, because he’s been deaf on that side for his entire life - but after a few years of learning, he can focus well enough on his left side that people unaware of his disability wouldn’t notice at all.
he’s the only one who feels like there should be something there.
except one day he meets two men in a tavern and they always make sure they stand on his right. he does not tell them about the deafness. he suspects that somehow they already know, even if it is not conscious.
there are some things lucretia could not erase.
one day, merle says something on taako’s left, and he replies - he’s learned to pay attention to the left side of his hearing by now, and while it’s an awkward and clunky second nature it’s second nature nonetheless. merle frowns, and almost calls him by a foreign name that stumbles on its way over his tongue. both of them forget about it.
when they remember everything, when the wall of static comes down, taako is perhaps the angriest that neither he nor lup bothers to translate anymore.
liches have perfect hearing, after all, and taako has learned to listen.
it is perhaps the cruelest thing that lucretia stole from them.
(i sent an anon about this to @timeforlupsopinion but i love it and had to write it asap omg)

Been a while but I’m still gonna do these prompts, so here’s the second one of @octolingkiera‘s suggestions, number 18 with lup, taako, barry, and magnus.
“In my defense, it seemed like a brilliant idea at the time.”
“Did it? Did it seem like a brilliant fucking idea Barold?” Taako snapped, trying to take in the absolute mess in front of him. Okay, this could be fixed, they could fix this.
“What in the world were you even trying to do?” he asked, starting to take a look at the equipment to try and piece together some way to reverse this.
“I mean, we were able to use the light of creation to harness the bonds to power the starblaster, and I was wondering what other kinds of things we could do with the two, and if we could somehow harness that energy in a way to defeat the hunger, so like-”
“Barold why the fuck are Lup and Magnus kids now?!”

“In my defense,” Taako says, giving Lup a sheepish smile, “itseemed like a brilliant idea at the time.”
“You are the biggest idiot I’ve ever met.” Lup sighs andshakes her head, pinching the bridge of her nose.
“Are you going get me down or not?”
“I should leave you there.” Lup glares around her hand andhe shrinks back a little. “I should leave you there and make you think about how and why you got your assstuck in this situation to begin with.”
“You wouldn’t do that to me, would you? Your best and onlybrother?” Taako bats his eyelashes at her and puts on his most pathetic face.
Lup is entirely unfazed. “Uh huh. Try that on someone who didn’t teach you everything you know.”
“You taught me?” Taako scoffs indignantly. “Puh-lease. If anyone perfected the art ofthe puppy eyes, it’s me. I’ve honedit down to a science. I’m the master.”
“What makes you think that?”
“No one else can look this pathetic!” Taako cries, shovinghis nose into the air. Lup unsuccessfully stifles a snort and Taako pauses. “Oh,wait, uh. That didn’t—that didn’t come out right, uh.” Lup starts laughing forreal and his face colors a bit. “Oh. Yeah. Laugh it up, Lup. See if I ever help youagain.”
“Taako. Babe. I love you so much,” Lup says between belts ofbreathless laughter.
Taako rolls his eyes and allows himself to smile too. “Yeah, alright, right back at cha’. Now. Are you gonna help me or not?”
