alliant: defence of the colony (2012) by small arms studio
alliant is a sci-fi tower defense strategy game set in the year of 3087. gameplay is divided into stages between various starships across the starship map, each with a set amount of waves to clear. alliant offers 3 difficulty settings: easy, normal, and hard. in-game difficulty increases with each wave and stage respectively. gameplay centers around surviving waves of attacks from alien insectoids during each stage by strategically purchasing, positioning, supplying, and repairing various towers (turrets) and barracks. barracks can be armored with a set amount of soldiers per barrack, each requiring a set cost for training. while soldiers take permanent damage, towers and barracks can be repaired at a set price per hp per second. players can command individual soldiers directly by clicking on them. rally points can also be set for all soldiers of a barrack by shift-clicking the respective barrack's flag. killing enemies and unlocking achievements increases the player's money and score with each wave, while clearing stages increases the player's level and skill points (sp), unlocking better defenses and more efficient spending. the map can be accessed between stages via the menu. here, players can replay stages, play new stages, spend sp to upgrade skills, view achievements, or save their game. hi-scores for each stage are recorded via the save game.

squares & blades is the first part of a 2-part series of turn-based strategy rpgs. gameplay plays out linearly between text-based narrative (travel section) and strategy encounters (battle section). players can choose between 4 classes to start with and select stats to buff upon each level upgrade. stats are divided between shield, life, and speed for each character. player-controlled characters and npc enemies both move on a grid and have the option to either move, attack, or flee each turn based on their set speed. players can choose to click the mouse for a regular attack or click and hold for a hard attack. after each successful encounter, the player can choose to continue, quit, or restart the battle sequence for a better result. the game ends if the player-character dies.

sojourns 2 is a rpg flash game in the sojourns series. visuals utilize sprites and 2d environments, while gameplay consists of ability cooldowns, equipment buffs, and consumable items. players choose from 6 classes with varying abilities and level up to unlock new abilities as they progress. sojourns utilizes a save/load game feature and limited respawns. players navigate the world via the map and select dungeons or encounters to clear the map and free the kingdom. shops are marked on the map and can be used to buy new items or sell items retrieved from clearing dungeons. the player can equip 4 abilities in total and swap abilities between encounters via the menu. players start each battle with full health and respawn at the beginning of the battle upon death (the same level they died at if they are in a dungeon). after 3 respawns (4 deaths), the player will be met with a game-over screen and returned to the main menu.
