An incomplete map of the setting for my current campaign, Atlas, circa 1036 of the Second Age. Will most likely be adding to this later this week as I move forward in my notes for upcoming adventures I want to do for my group.

After a very long hiatus, I’ve been back in the DM’s seat for about a month or two now. I never finished my Falmiir campaign, but this latest campaign of mine has sparked my imagination in a way that I can’t compare to any other creative endeavor I’ve pursued. Even though my group still talks about Falmiir to this day, I’d like to think that one day this campaign will take the throne.

It’s not often that I break out the graph paper and make a grid for miniatures, but when I do, I make sure it’s well worth it! Today, the gang got together to do a great playthrough of Gygax’s infamous Tomb of Horrors using Brendan McLeod’s awesome speedrunning rules (found here). This was the first time these guys had ever played through the Tomb of Horrors, and they had fun getting a look at a classic dungeon.

The net effect is that dungeoneering feels like spelunking or even scuba diving: a descent into a place that is inherently hostile to human life, and where a misplaced tinder box or a torn backpack can mean the difference between a comfortable trip home and a harrowing tale of survival.
From fuseboy’s in-depth writeup of Torchbearer. (via unpossiblelabs)
