Halloween Trading Strategy Treat Begins Next Week

Next week provides a special short-term seasonal opportunity, one of the most consistent of the year. The last 4 trading days of October and the first 3 trading days of November have a stellar record the last 30 years. From the tables below:

DJIA: Up 24 of last 30 years, average gain 1.95%, median gain 1.39%. S&P 500: Up 25 of last 30 years, average gain 1.96%, median gain 1.61%. NASDAQ: Up 25 of last 30 years, average gain 2.43%, median gain 2.29%. Russell 2000: Up 23 of last 30 years, average gain 2.34%, median gain 2.56%.

Many refer to our Best Six Months Tactical Seasonal Switching Strategy as the Halloween Indicator or Halloween Strategy and of course “Sell in May”. These catch phrases highlight our discovery that was first published in 1986 in the 1987 Stock Trader’s Almanac that most of the market’s gains have been made from October 31 to April 30, while the market, on average, tends to go sideways to down from May through October.

Tariff Pause Rebound Could Persist During Historically Bullish Good Friday Week

Good Friday is the one NYSE holiday with a clear positive bias before and negativity the day after (Stock Trader’s Almanac 2025, page 102). DJIA, S&P 500, NASDAQ, and Russell 2000 all have solid average gains on the three days and full week (shortened) before Good Friday. NASDAQ has been notably strong, up 21 of the last 24 days before Good Friday with an average gain of 0.75%. NASDAQ declines occurred in 2017 (–0.53%), 2022 (–2.14%), and 2024 (–.12%).

However, the day after Easter has a weak longer-term post-holiday record. The S&P 500 was down 16 of 20 years from 1984-2003 on the day after Easter while it has modestly improved recently, up 13 of the last 21 years. Post-Easter weakness has been generally short-lived with average gains 2- and 3-days after.

The blackboard drawings were drawn by Elliot, Mel, and Tobias! Initially, the blackboards only had the eye painted on by our lovely set department, and our director Georgina Escobar and set designer Raul Abrego thought it would be fun to fill it in with chalkboard drawings by Vincent and Quincy (because it lived in their area of the stage.) Real chalkboard drawings also let Vincent really draw on the board during Student Body each night!

Elliot drew some diagrams of dissections and organs (the dissected rat, bird, and anatomical heart near the top – which I think has an arrow pointing to an area in it that says “love?”), Tobias drew a bat and a mutated rat with an ear on it near the bottom, which I imagine to be part of Vincent’s research. Mel drew the skulls, eyes, and chirologia (specific hand gestures of saints in icons and paintings) on the lower blackboard, labelled with their meanings. You can see some of them in this photo Mel took of the books next to the blackboard- I also remember the IXIC hand was on there somewhere. The Control one is one I made up- I imagine Quincy drew these for his project and then they were vandalized by Beatrix. And of course there’s a heart with “Quincy” written in it by Vincent, with the circle over the i… and then Quincy has added a flame over it, making it a Sacred Heart (like the one on their bowtie). Symbolism!

May’s First Trading Day: Russell 2000 Best Higher 70.4% of the Time

The first trading day of May has had a bullish history over the past 27 years. DJIA, S&P 500 and NASDAQ have all averaged around 0.35% on the day. Russell 2000 has the best track record, up 19 times or 70.4% of the time since 1998. With an average gain of 0.22%, Russell 2000 is slightly weaker. NASDAQ bullishness fading recently, down 5 of the last 6 years. May’s first trading day’s worst loss was in 2020. DJIA and S&P 500 shed over 2.5% while NASDAQ and Russell 2000 dropped over 3%. Bitcoin Prices Rise On News Of Trumps Car Tariffs
