Wizards of the Coast and Viz Media announce ‘The Art of Magic: the Gathering - Ixalan’ - anticipated release in early 2018.

The substantial 240-page tome will feature dozens of full-color works by an impressive array of talented artists, including Christine Choi, Daarken and Titus Lunter, and will be complemented with additional in-depth lore by bestselling author and Magic: The Gathering Senior Game Designer James Wyatt.

THE ART OF MAGIC: THE GATHERING – IXALAN invites fans to set sail for the uncharted jungles of Ixalan, where dangerous beasts, magnificent ruins, and lost treasures lie waiting to be discovered. Saddle up your dinosaur mount and brave the unknown as you search the plane for a prize forgotten by history… until now!

VIZ Media also announces the opening of pre-orders for THE ART OF MAGIC: THE GATHERING – AMONKHET. Scheduled for retail release on July 4th, THE ART OF MAGIC: THE GATHERING – AMONKHET will present scores of full-color illustrations from artists such as Cliff Childs, Winona Wilson, Christine Choi and Adam Paquette. Additional insights and lore on the dangerous and beautiful world of Amonkhet are provided by James Wyatt. Amonkhet is the latest expansion game for Magic: The Gathering and is set for release by Wizards of the Coast this month.

Die Young di Ryan Yee premiato ai Chesley Award

Salve cari lettori! La ASFA, che sta per Association of Science&Fiction Artist ha annunciato i vincitori del 32mo Chesley Awards. Okay, ma cosa c’entra con Magic? C’entra eccome!

Nel 1985 la ASFA istituisce il Chesley Award che ben presto è diventato uno dei premi internazionali più prestigiosi nel campo delle illustrazioni fantasy. Il nome è una dedica a Chesley Bonestell il quale è stato un artista e illustratore votato alla fantascienza le cui opere furono di grande ispirazione per il genere. Le nomine e le votazioni dei Chesley Award sono prese all’interno della Community ASFA, di cui può farne parte solo chi è regolarmente iscritto.

Art di Ryan Yee: Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit art

Le art appartenenti alle carte di Magic The Gathering fanno la loro prima apparizione nel 1999, cioè quando viene istituito il premio “Gaming Related Illustration”, e da allora MTG è stata sempre protagonista in questa categoria, riuscendo sempre o a portare a casa una nomina o vincendo il premio di categoria.

Questo anno diverse erano le art nominate che venivano dal mondo di Magic ma chi si è portata il premio a casa è stata Die Young di Ryan Yee che in un post celebra così la vittoria:

I’d like to thank Sara Felix, the ASFA Board, and the ASFA Community for this opportunity. My family and friends for their endless support in a career that is not always easy. So many late nights and weekends devoted to doing what I love.

Thanks to my Art Director Dawn Murin and the WOTC Creative Team for commissioning me this illustration. Kaladesh for Magic: the Gathering is a plane full of invention and celebration, they let me tell a tragic yet beautiful depiction of a dying Aetherborn.

It’s humbling to be among artists I truly admire, Ryan Pancoast, Matthew Stewart, Cliff Childs and Mauricio Calle, It’s an honor to be on the same list as you. You should never forget where you came from and that’s why I would like to end saying this, as corny as it sounds never give up on your dreams especially when times are rough. Use your struggle in your artwork and if it’s genuine people will relate. I would like to dedicate this award to my father Terry Yee who was an incredible illustrator and person. Your life was taken too soon, and you never had a chance to see me mature into the person I am now. Wherever you are, this one is for you Dad <3

Non conosciamo le motivazioni della ASFA per aver premiato proprio Die Young ma sicuramente a molti della comunità bellunese era piaciuta sia per il flavour che ci stava dietro e sia perché l’art era estremamente significativa, riuscendo a trasmettere bene la effimerità e la caducità della vita degli eteridi, semplicemente con un fiore.
